1 Salisbury District Apr 13, 2016 Volume 5 Issue 8 T o Sharing Life e t h e r Annual Conference June 9-11 Salisbury District Pre-Conference Orientation May 26-7:00 pm Wesley Temple UMC Next Newsletter Apr 27, 2016 Inside This Issue: Friendship UMC 2 A MESSAGE From DS Rev. Fred Duncan To the Clergy and Laity of the Salisbury District, Resurrection greetings in the name of our risen Savior! I trust that you had a truly blessed Easter celebration in your churches a few weeks ago. May that joy and renewed spirit continue into the weeks and months ahead as we transition from Springtime to Summertime. Several weeks ago, I wrote about a special ceremony that will take place at Annual Conference this year in Princess Anne. That event is known as an Act of Repentance toward our Native American brothers and sisters for the atrocities of the past, particularly by the United Methodist Church. At that ceremony, tribal representatives from many of the Native American communities here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware will be will be recognized by CONAM (Committee on Native American Ministries) and others. This should be a very moving ceremony as we kick off Annual Conference this year. 3 Continued from Page 1 I want to encourage all the churches of the Salisbury District to consider being more intentional in becoming involved with Native American ministries. Did you know that every church in our Conference is supposed to have a designated person as a CONAM representative? (Do you know yours?) These persons, affirmed by their Charge Conference each year, are encouraged to participate in CONAM activities and meetings, as well as being the go-to person for Native American initiatives or programs in their local church. We here in the Salisbury District are fortunate enough to have at least two active tribes of Native Americans: The Accohonnics of Marion Station, near Crisfield, the Assateagues from the eastern side of the district, the Pocomokes to our south. In Delaware, we have the Nanticokes and Lenape peoples, as well as the Choptanks in the Cambridge and Easton areas. All these tribal communities hold annual pow wows, that most of the members of our local churches are not aware of. As your District Superintendent, I urge your churches to explore the possibilities of connecting with these or any of the Native American peoples in your local communities, from Nanticoke to Pocomoke, from Assateague to Wicomico (see how many of our rivers, towns, and roads are named after Native American people?) By the way, how many of you remembered to promote Native American Awareness Sunday on April 10 th, or any other Sunday for that matter? If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me at the district office. God bless you on all your ministry efforts to reach all people for Christ! Remember our mission: To make disciples for Jesus Christ, for the transformation of the world. Grace and Peace, Fred Duncan, DS Clergy Connection A Clergy Connection was held on March 30 at Trinity UMC (Salisbury). Thank-you to Trinity for their warm hospitality and these wonderful ladies who prepared a great lunch. Also a special thank-you to Rev. George Patterson and Rev. Joe Barth for facilitating an inspiring discussion on the subject of Pastoral Care. Pictured (l-r) are: Vicki Blades, Carolyn Lewis, Gayle Whitelock Thank-you for a great lunch!
