Inside This Issue: Grace UMC 2 Salisbury District Conference Bishop s Confirmation Rally 6 17 HealthFest 26 Missionpaloosa 31 Assembly Wellness Van 36 By the time you read this, it will be the week before Holy Week - the week we remember Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the washing of his disciple s feet on Maundy Thursday, his crucifixion on Good Friday, and of course, his glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. We ve come through Lent and had a chance to do some selfexamination and perhaps even made some changes during these 40 days that will help us draw closer to God. Certainly, Lent and Easter are all bout change, transformation, hope, joy and the promise of new life. On March 20 th, we also welcome Spring, which, after such a long, cold and wet winter, will be very welcome. Springtime is my favorite season. We witness the transformation of the earth when we see tulips and daffodils breaking through the ground bursting with color. Spring means change is in the air. Indeed, change is certainly in the air for your District Superintendent and wife. One change was Being the Hands and Feet of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ

3 that we recently lost our beloved cat, Cody, after 15 years as a member of our family. As many of you pet owners know, we had grown very attached to him and miss him very much. The parsonage is just a little bit lonelier without him. And, as some of you have already heard, I will be stepping down as your DS effective July 1 st. Although I hadn t planned to step down until next year (the end of the usual 6 year term), circumstances made it necessary for me to do so this year instead of next. I have been offered, and accepted, an appointment by the bishop to a local church here in the Salisbury District - Trinity United Methodist Church. Most of you know by now that Rev. George Patterson announced his retirement a couple of weeks ago due to health concerns after serving 18 years at Trinity. This meant that the bishop needed someone to serve at Trinity with experience and certain gifts that would be needed to lead this wonderful faith community for the foreseeable future. And so, I have accepted this appointment with humility and gratitude. I solicit your prayers as I re-enter local church ministry. It is not without just a bit of fear and trembling that I take on this huge responsibility of being the senior pastor of one of the largest churches in our Conference. The really good thing is, we will be remaining in the Salisbury community. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read how an angel appeared to the women at the tomb early that first Easter morning. The angel explained to them that Jesus was not there because he had been raised from the dead, just as he said! Matthew tells us that the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy. And that's what the resurrection does. It takes our fear, our worry, our hurt, our sadness...and it puts it all into perspective. The fact that Jesus is risen from the dead, that he was victorious over death and sin, is reason to celebrate. It's that fact that gives us joy despite our circumstances and through whatever we may face. What happened on that first Easter day still brings us joy and it still changes lives today. It is with hope in Jesus resurrection that Pat and I make this transition in our lives. We also hope you will join us in celebrating of the resurrection of Jesus at your local church, and that you will be filled with JOY no matter what your life circumstances, no matter what you face. Be sure to rejoice and sing as you celebrate how Jesus still changes lives today and is with us through all life s unexpected changes. God bless you all! Rev. Fred Duncan, DS

6 Salisbury District Conference March 17, 2018 The SON is always shining when the Salisbury District gathers and the District Conference on Saturday, 3/17, was no exception. A big thank-you to Mt Zion UMC, Quantico, and especially to our lovely hostesses, Caroline Johnson and Brenda Price, for their hospitality. The Praise Band from Higher Hope in Christ, Salisbury, lifted the spirits of everyone in attendance. Salisbury District Trustees President, Barry Laws, gave a report of the many activities of the Trustees and Rev. Dr. Joe Barth shared the financial status of our District. An election was held to fill two vacancies on the District Board of Trustees and our congratulations to Tom Fields and Rev. Charles Jacobson elected to fill those positions. An enlightening presentation on Active Shooter Preparedness was given by Lt. Wesley Forchion, Asst Commander Special Operations Division, Maryland State Police. Thanks to everyone for attending!

7 EASTER SERVICES AT BETHANY UMC Holy Thursday Worship, March 29, 12:00 noon & 7:00 p.m., Hand-washing symbolizing cleansing, Holy Communion, and stripping the sanctuary. Good Friday Service, March 30, at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. The film Jesus, starring Jeremy Sisto as Jesus, will be shown in the Sanctuary. Lasting nearly 3 hours, it is about the life, work and death of Jesus as we know it from the Bible. Outdoor Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday, April 1, 6:30 a.m. at Assateague Island State Park, 6915 Stephen Decatur Hwy, Berlin, MD. Follow the directional signs to the pavilion. 26 HealthFest Looking for a day of healthy family fun? Then be sure to attend HealthFest: An event for all ages Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury. Visit more than 50 exhibitors, and take advantage of 35 free health screenings for the entire family. Tour a Maryland State Police medivac helicopter, participate in a hands on demonstration of the DaVinci Surgical Robot, enjoy fun demonstrations and much more. 37 Pecometh Fishing Derby This is your chance to fish at Camp Pecometh! Come join us Saturday April 28 th from 8am-11am for our annual Fishing Derby. Young and old alike have a great time fishing at Riverside and from our pier. Lunch is included in the registration cost, and the Grand Prize is a free week of camp! The age brackets are 10 and under ($10 registration fee), ($10 registration fee), and 18 and over ($15 registration fee). Prizes will be handed out for different categories within each age group. Be sure to bring your fishing gear along with you, including poles, extra hooks, and bait. We will have some bait for sale, but it goes quick! Proceeds go towards our campership fund, which helps as many kids come to camp as possible. Please note that participants 16 and over will need to bring a Maryland Fishing License to be in accordance with Maryland DNR laws.
