St. Philip s Episcopal Church We come together from all walks of life to gather here. Why do we gather at St. Philip s? We unite, in the belief that God has blessed each and every one of us. We see the face of God in each other as we share a warm greeting and a friendly smile. We respect each other s differences and enjoy one another s fellowship and mutual respect. We unite, willing and able to roll up our sleeves to serve the community and others in need. That need might be helping make a home safe and warm. A hungry family. School supplies for a child in first grade. A casserole for a family whose mother is recovering from an injury. Together we make a difference in people s lives. We unite, in order to grow spiritually through prayer and worship. Our mutual support of each other gives us added strength on our journey. Out of many, we are one. We unite... because we are St. Philip s.

OUR NEW RECTOR Our parish is seeking a half-time rector. The vestry, new rector, and parish will work together on a strategic plan to grow the rector position. The new rector should be someone who: Is energetic, with a youthful attitude and brings his or her energy to our life at St. Philips; Provides a spiritual message that helps us in everyday living; Relates to and inspires our youth while incorporating them into the ministry of the church; Is interested and supportive of music; and Shares St Philip s with the community. Our parish is seeking a rector who is willing to work with strong lay leadership. Together, we are committed to the following goals: 1) Attract families with children and youth to our church. 2) Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the church. 3) Move decisively to provide high quality education and formation for every age and stage of life. 4) Develop ministries that work toward healing those broken by life circumstances. 5) Create more opportunities for people to form meaningful relationships. 5 Residential Services Palatine Township has received the Governor s Home Town Award based on the services it provides to its residents. The township provides social services to the community including general assistance counseling, tax assessment advice, transportation for seniors and the permanently disabled, a food pantry and numerous outreach programs that address the special needs of low-income families. The Palatine Township office also houses and funds youth counseling and child daycare programs. The Palatine Township Senior Center offers a host of services and activities, including hot lunches, ongoing education programs, health screenings, senior health insurance counseling and adult daycare for those with memory loss. Home-delivered meals to home-bound residents are also one of the services provided. Palatine residents have immediate transportation to major medical facilities by calling 911. Four local hospitals serve Palatine Alexian Brothers Medical Center, St. Alexius Medical Center, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and Northwest Community Hospital. The Village of Palatine provides high-quality fire, paramedic and police protection, in addition to large, service-oriented health, public works and community development departments. Palatine was one of the first communities in the nation to require all fire fighters to be certified paramedics. The Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, the Rotary Club, and the Village work together to organize major festivals: Independence Day, a multi-day celebration, as well as the Taste and Touch of Palatine and Oktoberfest, both of which are weekend celebrations. Most international service organizations have active chapters in Palatine, including Kiwanis, Lions Club, and Rotary Club. Local associations also include the League of Women Voters, Business and Professional Women s Association and the Palatine and Inverness Garden Clubs. Palatine is blessed to have a variety of community musical, theatrical, cultural, arts and dance groups. The Palatine/ Inverness Arts Council organizes several events throughout the year to support performing and visual arts and artists. Residents enjoy community theater plays and musicals as well as band and choir concerts at Cutting Hall Auditorium. There are Chinese, Greek, Korean, Vietnamese and Ukrainian congregations in Palatine, as well as Hispanic congregations minutes away. Palatine is also home to a Sikh temple, or gurdwara. Each year, St. Nectarios Church hosts Greek Fest, a celebration of Greek culture. There are many opportunities to learn about other cultures in Palatine, whether it is by becoming friends with neighbors or attending special cultural events.

OUR PAST Organized as a mission church in August 1948, St. Philip s was one of the only Episcopal congregations in northwest suburban. Services were first held in the Masonic Hall at the corner of Palatine and Plum Grove Roads until a suitable structure could be built in The parish grew quickly and in 1957 the present modified A-Frame church was added. We celebrated the Holy Eucharist for the first time in the new structure on December 22 of that year. Over the years, members of St. Philip s have served as founders of Episcopal parishes in neighboring communities. The first priest in charge was the Rev. Rob Roy Hardin. In 1950, he was followed for one year by the Rev. Michael Becker. From 1952 until his retirement in June 1985, the Rev. Sheldon B. Foote served as rector. The Rev. Michael A. Phillips served St. Philip s for eight and a half years before accepting the call to serve as the rector of Christ Church in Poughkeepsie, New York. He also served at Holy Trinity in New York City for seven years and now serves as Vicar of Trinity Church. The Rev. Thomas D. Janiec held his first service at St. Philip s on July 4, His retirement journey began on June 29, 2008 following the service and parish picnic held in his honor. October 2009 brought the Rev. Lisa Graves who reminded the parish why we gather at St. Philip s. She remained our rector until she and her husband (also a priest) were called by the Bishop of West Virginia as a clergy couple to minister two closely located parishes. Mission Statement for St. Philip s Church SEEK...a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ SHARE...the love and compassion of Christ SERVE...others with open hearts SHINE...with Christ s light, illuminating our world

WHO WE ARE We are friendly. People new to St. Philip s are welcomed by many parishioners after the service and during coffee hour. Time and time again, newcomers become long-time parishioners. Why? They say it s because we are a warm, friendly group of people, and we care about each other. Plain and simple. We are faithful. Our strength is our faith. We believe that God is not just for Sundays, but the center of our lives. We honor the traditions and values of our faith to remind us that God is with us every day. We are diverse. At St. Philip s, we not only embrace diversity, we celebrate it. We share a mutual respect of each other s viewpoints. The combination of our diversity and unity is a wonderful example of Christ s love for all of us. We are dynamic. We have a can do spirit here at St. Philip s. We look for opportunities to serve, whether we re adopting families for the Christmas Angel Tree, filling Thanksgiving baskets, or participating in any number of worthwhile outreach projects. Together, we roll up our sleeves and get things done to make our community a better place.

Recreation It is easy to find fun things to do in Palatine. Palatine has two public park districts offering four swimming complexes, as well as horse stables, a dog park, a skate park, bike trails, a 430-seat auditorium, an amphitheater, playgrounds, sports fields, tennis courts, 18-hole and 9-hole golf courses with clubhouses, two driving ranges, a disc golf course, and lakes perfect for fishing or row boating. For competitive, young athletes, Palatine offers a full range of athletic leagues, including baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, football and swimming. Young and old alike enjoy exploring nature at the Crabtree Nature Center or the Cook County Forest Preserve that borders Palatine to the north. In addition to Palatine s own specialty shops in its revitalized downtown district, its residents are only a few minutes away from Woodfield Shopping Center, one of the largest meccas of department and specialty stores and restaurants, as well as Deer Park Town Center, which offers over 70 fine stores and restaurants, and the Arboretum of South Barrington, a vast open-air shopping center that also boasts a luxury cinema. Residents enjoy visiting Palatine Public Library s 96,000-square-foot facility that houses hundreds of thousands of books and audiovisual selections. We have access to thousands of magazines and newspapers either through online databases or hard copies. The library hosts special programs for children and adults and offers computers and meeting rooms for public use.

OUR COMMUNITY An enjoyable place to work, play and live, Palatine has a host of amenities and community resources. Our village is located thirty miles northwest of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, with easy access to Chicago s beautiful lakefront, museums, theaters and special events via the Metra train system or interstate highway. St. Philip s is located within walking distance of the Palatine Metra train station. Interstate highways also make it convenient to travel to and from neighboring suburbs and O Hare International Airport. Palatine has 68,000 residents and a median age of 34. The median household income is about $57, and the median house value is $161, Major employers in the area include Schneider Square D, Weber-Stephen Products, Motorola Solutions, Honeywell, Northrop, Fluke, United Airlines, Kemper Insurance, AT&T Illinois. JP Morgan Chase, Allstate, and Sears. St. Philip s has served as a spiritual home for many community leaders in both the public and private sector. Education Our elementary and middle-school students receive an excellent education and attend fourteen elementary schools, three middle schools and one combined campus through Community Consolidated School District 15. To date, District 15 was the first educational organization in Illinois to win the Level III Lincoln Award for Achievement of Excellence and the first in the nation to win the Reed Hundt Award for Excellence in Technology. In 2003, District 15 received the nation s highest honor for quality and performance excellence: the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Our high school students attend two high schools, both of which have earned Blue Ribbon School Awards as models of excellence and equity by the U.S. Department of Education. Palatine also offers a number of outstanding private and parochial schools, including two Catholic schools, one Lutheran school and Quest Academy for gifted children. In addition, Palatine is home to Kirk Developmental Training Center and Little City residential school that serve students with special needs. Post-high school educational careers may be continued at William Rainey Harper College, a community college, and satellite campuses of Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University, and National-Louis University. Numerous private and public colleges and universities are located within a reasonable driving distance from Palatine.

OUR WORSHIP The Eucharist and the Book of Common Prayer are central to our corporate worship. All baptized Christians are welcome to share in Holy Communion. Music, making a joyful noise, plays a very important part in our weekly celebration. There are three services during the week. On Sunday 8:00 AM Rite I Eucharist 10:00 AM Rite II Eucharist with music and choir, followed by a friendly coffee hour During the summer months, the service schedule changes to one service Sunday at 9 AM. On Tuesday 9:30 AM Rite II Eucharist In addition, there are services offered for special days and holy days. At St. Philip s, parishioners enjoy leading and participating in ministries that enable us to worship, learn, lift up scripture, welcome others, appreciate beauty, break bread together, share a prayer, help those in need, spread laughter, and allow our children to build a relationship with Jesus Christ. The parish has an effective prayer chain which prays regularly for those who are sick or otherwise in need. 11 OUR BUILDING The physical worship space seats 220 people. A columbarium, memorial to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a baptismal font are toward the back of the nave. The Stations of the Cross decorate the walls of the nave. The sanctuary consists of a large contemporary rendering of the suffering Christ, an elevated altar, seasonal banners created by the parishioners, a large brass ambry, and a communion rail/gate. In addition to the worship space, the physical plant of the Church includes the sacristy, offices, and the Foote Library (named after a beloved former rector). The undercroft (including the nursery) serves as the primary place for fellowship and Christian education. The building is regularly utilized by community organizations. Recent improvements include a handicapped-accessible elevator fully funded by a memorial. New signage for the church s exterior will be added.

OUR FINANCES The annual fundraising programs and the pledges collected through the stewardship process provide the operating funds to finance our activities for the year. Salaries, maintenance, ministries, programs, diocesan support, and other needs are included. There are two additional committees involved with finances, the Rectory Fund Committee and Memorial Fund Committee. The church sold a rectory years ago. The funds are invested for the benefit of the parish. The Memorial Fund serves as the guardian of the Church s columbarium and is the custodian of memorial funds used to enhance worship FINANCES Actual Actual Budget Average Sunday Attendance TBA Total giving and revenue $ 129,176 $ 138,533 $ 134,820 Total expenses $ 120,213 $ 115,005 $ 121,180 Surplus $ 8,963 $ 23,528 $ 13,640

OUR STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION Presently, our staff consists of a part-time interim rector, a secretary, and a part-time choir director/organist. These are the only paid positions. The vestry is comprised of a senior and junior warden and nine vestry members. The senior warden serves a one-year term and the junior warden serves a two-year term with the final year as senior warden. Vestry members serve three-year terms with three members rotating off each year. Each vestry member is charged with overseeing some aspect of parish life. The wardens and rector meet once per month prior to the general vestry meeting. The church has a treasurer and the vestry has a clerk, both of whom are non-voting members of the vestry. All parish members are welcome to attend vestry meetings. COMMUNICATION Communication is accomplished through several different media. Our monthly newsletter, The Epistle, captures a snapshot of events, calendar, and activities. It is available electronically and by print media. Verbal and written announcements are offered during each service. Two bulletin boards hold church calendars along with local and civic events. Our web site is maintained and updated frequently. Please visit our web site: for additional information.

EDUCATION/FORMATION For children of ages three through twelve, St. Philip s offers the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessoribased religious formation program. This program seeks to create and facilitate a sacred, hands-on space for children called the atrium, in which both the children and their catechists can hear, ponder, and celebrate the most essential mysteries of the Christian faith as revealed in the Scriptures and the Liturgy. A typical day begins in the prayer corner and children are invited to share the good things and bad things happening in their lives so that we can offer communal prayer, after which the children separate according to age for individual and group activities.the children then join their parents for communion and the remainder of the service. Currently, there is no religious formation program for children above the age of twelve. Many of these children participate regularly in the liturgy as acolytes. Adult formation at St. Philp s presently consists of Advent and Lenten programs. There continues to be considerable interest among parish members to increase adult formation.

FELLOWSHIP The Social Committee Plans the parish social activities such as coffee hours, parish meetings, receptions, and our annual picnic. The Green Thumbs IIs a group of interested gardeners that meet twice a month to assist in the upkeep of the grounds of the church. The memorial garden and its fountain draw regular visitors and the Green Thumbs help to maintain its peaceful beauty. They also coordinate an annual Parish clean-up day. The Lunch Bunch Is a ladies group that meets regularly for lunch and fellowship. Together, they plan and host a variety of events throughout the year, such as Dinner with Santa and an annual Spaghetti Dinner. The money collected is used to beautify the interior of St. Philip s. Fundraising Committee annual golf outing and annual auction.

MISSION St Philip s members, at all levels, eagerly and enthusiastically engage in Mission programs. We currently take part in those listed below. Angel Tree Project. This Christmas project involves purchasing and wrapping gifts for families in Palatine. Parishioners place these gifts under our Christmas tree in the undercroft. Volunteers then divide, bag and deliver the gifts to the appropriate location to be presented to the correct families. Apple Tree Project. We collect, donate and help distribute school supplies before school starts that benefit students. Habitat for Humanity. We help to build, renovate and repair houses for people in need. Parish members helped in Mission, South Dakota. PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) We prepare meals several times a year for PADS, who serves meals during the winter months to those in need of a hot meal. Rebuilding Together. We help low-income, elderly, and disabled people, as well as veterans, make their homes warm, safe, and dry. Thanksgiving Project. We purchase canned and boxed goods to supply a needy family with a nice Thanksgiving dinner. The donor places all the food, paper supplies, etc. in a laundry basket (for further use by the family). Other parish members purchase and donate grocery store gift cards so the families are able to purchase the perishable food (turkey, dairy, etc.) needed to complete their meal. There is a special colorful food container in the back of our church that holds food donations which are transported to either the Palatine Township Food Pantry or Journeys From Pads to Hope (a day center for the area s homeless). In addition, hats, gloves, and socks are collected for those in need.
