Presbyterian Courier The Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green, Kentucky Volume 17 August 2013 Issue 8 In the classic Carly Simon tune from the 1970 s, Anticipation, she sings: Stay right here, cause these are the good old days Forty years later, the singer-songwriter, Pink, updates the theme, singing These are the good old days I wish I could stay here This message of happiness and nostalgia in the current day might be applicable to our church. After all, we are having a wonderful time, these days. Elsewhere in this sterling issue of The Presbyterian Courier, you will read about plans for a Fellowship/Stewardship activity we are calling Simple Gifts. Each of us has something we can offer to others, to encourage them, help them, or brighten their day. Simple Gifts is a congregation-wide effort to identify those offerings, and to share them. Each week in the worship bulletin, there will be a listing of what s been offered, and an opportunity to give or volunteer yourself in some way. We will wrap everything up with a tremendous dedication service and all-church luncheon on September 13 th. The Christian Education Ministry wants us all to learn how to experience God s presence in our daily lives. Our classes are planned to encourage practical and theological thought. Our teachers are the best anywhere. The children s choir, chimes, and Orff Instrument instruction continues on Sunday mornings too. It is a great time to be a child (or a friend of a child) in our church. The annual Pig Pickin is scheduled for August 11. The cook team is ready, and the pig is (slowly) being talked into it. The group of Youth and adults who attended the Montreat Youth Conference this summer will lead worship on August 11. We look forward to getting a big charge from them as we share their enthusiasm. On August 23 (a Friday evening) we are having a Presbyterian Church Night at the Bowling Green Ballpark. We have been offered the airconditioned ELPO skybox, and tickets, hot dogs, and drinks are free. The Hot Rods opponent that night is the dreaded West Michigan Whitecaps, a Detroit Tigers affiliate. Our College Ministry will enjoy a back-to-school cookout on August 29. These are great days for our church. And Know You Are Loved. Matthew Page

Fall is upon us and soon school will begin and we will switch from summer to fall programming. The Fall Sunday School Lineup is rather exciting. We have three classes that continue, which are the Christian Thought, the Floyd Hays Ellis, and the Parenting. The Christian Thought Class located in the conference room will be discussing the Holy Land. The Floyd Hays Ellis Class is a discussion over the lectionary readings for the week. The Parenting Class is a supportive group that discusses and encourages one another in the everyday life of a parent. This fall we will also have some short studies classes. The first will be from September 8 th through October 13 th. The class is called Christian Perspectives: Near and Far and will be led by Dr. Isabel (Bella) Mukonyora, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at WKU. We will also have a class October 20 th through November 10 th called The Politics of Prophets and this will be led by Terry Shoemaker. On November 24 th in Fellowship Hall we will have a panel discussion over Preparing for Advent: Claiming this Sacred Time. During Advent, December 1 st 22 nd, Maria Mayo will be leading us in a class entitled Spoken Through the Prophets: The Role of Prophecy in the Story of Jesus. We also have activities for our Children on Sunday mornings and throughout the year. Make sure to pick up a Children s Activity Card with the full list. If one is looking for small groups to join throughout the year I have compiled a list. If anyone notices that something has been left off please let me know. For more information about anyone of these please contact the church office. 4 Youth News From The Desk of your Youth Director The summer of 2013 was chocked full of service projects, mission trips, recreational events, trips that brought us closer together, and memorable worship experiences. AROUND BG Many of us helped out with vacation bible school in early June. Several of us spent time on Wednesdays in June helping around the church. This included moving worship elements back into the sanctuary after it was painted. We also helped restock the church food pantry. HOLIDAY WORLD On June 12, we had a fun trip to Holiday World and Splashin' Safari in Santa Clause, IN. Lots of member's friends attended. In fact, for the first time, we had more guests than regular youth group members! CITY SIGHTS/CITY LIGHTS Our middle schoolers shifted into mission mode in late June (26-28) and traveled to Hopkinsville for the WKY Presbytery's annual City Sights/City Lights mission experience. First Presbyterian Hopkinsville was our gracious host. Service projects included working with children and youth at the Christian County Boys & Girls Club and landscape work at the Pennyroyal Museum. We attended a Hoptown Hoppers baseball game and spent the evenings at the church with worship & devotional time and playing games (Ga Ga Ball is their favorite!). Page 4

HIGH SCHOOL MISSION TRIP TO PHILADELPHIA Due to a last minute need for a male adult leader and one high school youth, Rob McAllister and I were able to join the WKY Presbytery high school mission trip to Philadelphia, PA. We joined 19 other youth and leaders from our presbytery and departed from Owensboro on July 6. We made an overnight stop at First Presbyterian church in Morgantown, WV. While there, we held a commissioning service of hand washing (symbolizing humble service to others) and helped with a community breakfast on Sunday morning. After breakfast we departed for Philly. In Philly, our home for the week was at Broad Street Ministry. The twenty-one of us from Kentucky joined forces with groups from two churches: Sixth Presbyterian - Pittsburg and New Hope Presbyterian Church from Maryland. The entire group totaled 47 people! This was an amazing week but let me tell you, this was not a trip for the faint of heart! We slept on hardwood floors with no air conditioning. We were split into six neighborhood groups, each with a Broad Street staff member as a leader. Every morning the groups departed for different Philadelphia neighborhoods via bus, subway, or on foot. Each day we worked different projects at our designated locations for the day. They varied from gardening/weeding, picking up trash, cleaning, construction, helping with food agencies, helping sell street newspapers to benefit the homeless, and spending time with people in the neighborhoods. For more info on Broad Street Ministry, go to their website: Photos from the trip can be viewed on Facebook: set=a &type=1&l=af5cd7ac02 MONTREAT YOUTH CONFERENCE Next we headed to Montreat for week four of the youth conference (July 13-20). We had a total of 13 people in our group this year, 8 youth and 5 adult leaders. This year s theme was Here and be Heard. The theme centered around God s presence in our world, God listening to us, us listening to God, and speaking out on God s behalf to a hurting and unjust world. The conference leadership was outstanding this year! We grew closer as a group, had great fun and delicious meals! Our Montreat youth & leaders will be leading worship on Montreat Sunday, August 11 at 10:00am in conjunction with the Pig Pickin. For more info on Montreat go to Photos from the trip can be viewed on Facebook: set=a &type=1&l=d50b7ea8ac Sunday Youth Group meets every Sunday (except 8/11) 6-8pm at the church. All youth in grades 6-12 are welcome to join us! Wednesday Night Youth Fellowship (Grades 8-12, 5:30-6:30pm) resumes on August 21 at Spencer s Coffeehouse. The Youth Ministry Team will meet Sunday, August 4 at 5pm prior to youth group. Page 5

Congregational Care & Fellowship Annual Pig Pickin set for August 11th The entire church will be convening for worship and a picnic on Sunday, August 11th at the Beards' Pavilion, 1061 Garvin Lane. (See map or call church office for directions.) This will also be Montreat Sunday! Worship will begin at 10 a.m. and the picnic will follow. Please dress comfortably, bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and a dish to share. The roast pork, soft drinks and water will be provided, so please bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. The day will be filled with Montreat memories and our youth will be assisting with the service. Let's make some memories of our own see you on August 11. 8 Presbyterian Women P.W. is made up of all the women in our Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green. We are made up of 7 circles of women who meet monthly at various times and places. We meet together for fellowship, bible study, and prayer to build a caring community of women to strengthen the church and witness to the promise of God's Kingdom. Some of the activities we are involved with include: decorating the church at Christmas; providing a meal during the Holy Week services in the downtown churches; participating in Presbytery-wide functions; providing articles for Newborns in Need, Bellewood Uspiritus; giving offerings for the Thank, Birthday and Least Coin missions. Circles will begin meeting in August and all women are invited to visit and /or join them. You can find meeting times and contact information on page 2 of this newsletter. Circle Bible Study Book Class Being Offered Kara Hildebrandt will be teaching a class on the new circle Bible study book on August 11th at 2:30 at the Presbytery office in Hopkinsville. You can enjoy the Pig Pickin that morning and still make it over to Hopkinsville for the class! Friends (submitted by Donna Hill) Page 8 This is something I found very interesting although I will admit it doesn t have much practical use now. The information is quoted from Medical News Today, July 9, The GIRAFF stands over 3 tall, is a motorized robot that could facilitate a 2 way video call. It is controlled remotely by computer and allows family in a different location to interact with a patient. It is being piloted in remote Scottish islands. Emelin Collier, head of planning for National Health Services Western Isles, sings the robot's praises for people with dementia: "The Giraff is simple to use; it is kept in the home of the person with dementia, and the controls for the robot are with the person's relative or carer. The relative could call into the robot to effectively waken it up, and the person with dementia would not have to do anything at all. The caller's face would appear on the screen, and the caller could then navigate the robot through the home of the person with dementia to check that all is well, check medication has been taken, food has been eaten, the person has washed and dressed or just to provide reassurance or have a chat." I do know that in Atlanta the Presbyterian Homes and Services facility does use computers loaded with family voices and messages that are placed in the memory care unit patient rooms and are activated by the staff to waken, or calm a patient. There are definite pro s and con s but for early stages, when folks really want to be independent as long as possible, it seems like it might help through that transition. But I am not convinced.

Church and Community The Property Ministry Report for July 2013 The restoration and repair of the church s exterior brick and the painting of the building s interior are now complete. In addition, Mr. Keith Richardson has now installed the restored sets of doors on the State Street side of the church which are now open to the congregation. It is important to note that while the restoration project of the church is finished, there remain a few minor problems that have recently emerged. They are: 1. A plumbing leak has been discovered in one of the pre-school rooms and in a hallway. These leaks come from one of the ceiling pipes leading to the HVAC system. Lyons Service is addressing the problem areas. 2. During a walk-through inspection by the Property Ministry with the Hatler Brothers Painting Company, it was observed a water leak was causing damage to the ceiling in the transom area in the second floor hallway. In addition, Mr. David Bunch from Hale Roofing came to inspect the roof and discovered several tears in the membrane which he believes occurred from foot traffic on the roof. Although there is a wooden walkway leading to the HVAC system, it is narrow and sometimes not used. Mr. Bunch recommends widening this walkway from the stairwell to and around the HVAC system. 3. Recently, ceiling lights in the Sanctuary have been going on and off during Sunday service. 31-W Insulation, who recently installed new insulation in the attic, has returned and spread the insulation away from the lights to prevent an overheating of these lights. Furthermore, Bush Electric is scheduled to come and inspect the operation of the ceiling lights and make any changes necessary. The Property Ministry members, David Faxon, Joel Brown, Bobby Rabold, Doug Humphrey, Tom Moody, Bob Hunt, Larry Warden, David Financial Summary Year to Date June Budget Muffett, Richard Barefoot, and 2013 Actual Gilbert Calhoun, would like to 400,000 express their appreciation to 346, , ,000 the church congregation and 329, ,359 its ministers for their excellent 300,000 support during the restoration 250,000 of the church building.
