1 Frederick Buechner says, As everybody knows by now, Gospel means Good News. What is both Good and New about the Good News is the wild claim that Jesus did not simply tell us that God loves us even in our wickedness and folly and wants us to love each other the same way and to love him too, but that if we will let him, God will actually bring about this unprecedented transformation of our hearts himself. Brian McLaren says that the good news is that the kingdom of God is at hand. Striking of the Hour Welcome For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for salvation. Romans 1:16 S e r vice fo r the Lord s Da y October 9, 2016 Gathering Around the Word Prelude Chorale Prelude Johann Gottfried Walther Preserve Us, Lord, With Your Word We Rise in Spirit and in Body Call to Worship The Gospel is good news. God has provided a way to salvation for us all through the gift of Jesus Christ to the world. Jesus suffered for our sin, overcame death, and now offers a share of his triumph to us. The gospel is good news because it comes as a gift, not something we have to labor to earn. John 3:16; Romans 5:8-11; II Corinthians 5:14-19; Titus 2:11-14 Hymn 850 In a Deep, Unbounded Darkness DIVINUM MYSTERIUM John Calvin says The Gospel is a public exhibition of the Son of God manifested in the flesh, to deliver a ruined world, and to restore people from death to life. Call to Confession Prayer of Adoration and Confession Loving God, we begin our worship with deep sorrow for our sins. In this way, we hope to fulfill our Lord Christ s call to Repent and believe the gospel. Forgive us for the mistakes we have made. Forgive us for our selfishness. Forgive us for the hurtful things we have said and for not saying healing things. We fail in many ways: out of confusion, out of misunderstanding, because of anger, because of spite. Now assure us by your mercy. Help us to make a new way in the world, following Jesus Christ, in whose name we make this prayer. Amen. A Silence is observed for Personal Confession Declaration of Good News All sit Passing of the Peace By words and gestures, we share signs of peace and reconciliation.

2 At the beginning of Romans, Paul touches on several elements of the Gospel message: The connection to the scriptures, Jesus divine and human heritage, Jesus death and resurrection, his lordship, his grace, and the call to tell others. The Gospel reading connects the story of Jesus to the whole message of scripture. Prayer for Illumination Hearing the Word All Sit New Testament Reading Romans 1:1-5 [I am] Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name. Anthem Make Well In Your Name Walter L. Pelz Please Stand Gospel Reading Luke 24:13-15, Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us? That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. All Sit #6 in a Series of Requested Sermons Sermon What Is the Gospel? Matthew Covington Responding to the Word All Stand Response Hymn 774 Now Is There A New Creation STUTTGART The Apostles Creed tells the story of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit through a series of news-bulletin-like statements. The Gospel is Good News. Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
