1 The child s simple acceptance that God can do anything is a good place to begin in faith. Frederick Buechner says that Doubt is the ants in the pants of faith; it keeps it alive and moving. Fools say in their hearts, There is no God. Psalm 14:1 S e r vice fo r the Lord s Da y October 16, 2016 Gathering Around the Word Striking of the Hour Welcome To worship in spirit and in truth, is to worship genuinely. Prelude Hymn Voluntary Wayne Barlow Come, follow me, the Savior spake, All in My way abiding; obey My call and guiding. Oh, bear the cross, whate er betide, take My example for your guide. We Rise in Spirit and in Body Call to Worship The hour is coming and now is when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. And the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, And those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:23-24 Hymn 796 We Come to You for Healing, Lord LAND OF REST Call to Confession

2 Prayer of Adoration and Confession Loving God, thank you for the freedom to doubt! Thank you for using our natural wonder as a teaching tool. And thank you that our uncertainties are only temporary, while your mercy is eternal. We admit to our uncertainty. We have denied spiritual realities. We have disregarded scripture. We have hewed toward self-reliance, and pretended that we did not need you. Confused by our own faithlessness, we have been unable to teach faith to our children. Draw us closer to you now, O God. Guide us to an ever more honest seeking of the truth. Lead us, in our wondering, to fuller understanding. Do not leave us faithless, but give us hope. Help us to make our way gladly following Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. A Silence is observed for Personal Confession Response Hymn 792 There Is a Balm in Gilead BALM IN GILEAD There is a balm in Gil-e-ad to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gil-e-ad to heal the sin sick soul. Some-times I feel dis-cour-aged, and think my work s in vain, But then the Ho-ly Spi-rit re-vives my soul a-gain. There is a balm in Gil-e-ad to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gil-e-ad to heal the sin sick soul. Declaration of Good News Passing of the Peace By words and gestures, we share signs of peace and reconciliation. All sit Prayer for Illumination Hearing the Word Biblical Job accepts the majesty of God. The Psalmist sings of the evidence of God in nature. The writer of Hebrews knows full well that belief stretches beyond sight, and yet what is visible bears witness to the Creator. All Sit Old Testament Reading (Responsive) Job 38:1, 4-11, 28, Psalm 19:1 [The Lord] answered Job out of the whirlwind: Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements surely you know! The heavens are telling the glory of God. Or who stretched the line upon the land? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? God has crafted the world from horizon to horizon. Who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped? The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork. Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew? God s glory is on tour in the skies! Anthem Good News Celebration Dale Wood/INVITATION Please Stand New Testament Reading Hebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

5 THIS WEEK: CAMP LOUCON Registration for our Retreat is open. We'll gather with youth from around the presbytery from November 4-6 for a weekend of worship, learning and fellowship. All 6th-12th grade youth are included. Forms are on our website or in the office. See Leslee Kirkconnell with questions. BEGINNING TODAY, the Rev. Dr. Matthew Covington will be leading the Christian Thought Class (Conference Room) at 9:30am. He will help us understand our Reformed theological heritage by looking at the Catechism that was written in the 1990s. All are welcome to join the class! WHAT ARE OUR CHILDREN LEARNING? Growing in Grace and Gratitude is helping our Preschool and 4th-5th Graders learn how God Provides Food. The story of Manna in the desert in Exodus 16 provides the foundation. Our Godly Play Class (Kindergarten-3rd Grade) is wondering about Genesis 6:9-17; The Flood and the Ark. Be sure to talk with your children/grandchildren about the stories they are learning. COMING UP SOON: GAME NIGHT! Fun Fall Theme on Friday October 28, 6:00pm in Fellowship Hall. Bring finger food appetizer to share and any board games you wish to play. We'll have lots of games to try and someone to teach. All ages welcome - come when you can, leave when you must. See Glenn or Leslee Kirkconnell with questions. THE FALL FESTIVAL AND BLESSING OF THE PETS will be October 30, beginning at 4:30pm. Pets and children can wear costumes! Fun Fall activities planned by our Youth will be in Fellowship Hall. Please bring a donation for the Humane Society - pet food, cleaning supplies etc. DONATIONS NEEDED for our Fall Festival! We need bags of individually wrapped candy and plain cupcakes or sugar cookies (for decorating). We will also need several bags of apples. Please bring to the office (baked goods should be brought not earlier than the Friday before). 3 CENTS-A-MEAL OFFERING will be collected in worship on Sunday October 30. Our children will come through the congregation to collect your offering of coins and bills. One third of our gifts benefits our Food Pantry and the remainder helps hungry people through the Presbyterian Hunger Program. If each person set aside 3 cents per meal, that is $2.70 per month. A small amount with enormous impact. We will collect the offering quarterly during worship and every time we share food in Fellowship Hall. If you wish to 'catch up' for the year, it is $27.00 per person. DO YOU HAVE A 'SECRET' CHILI RECIPE? November 13 is Stewardship Sunday and we're going to celebrate with a Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale, with all proceeds to benefit the youth going to Montreat next summer. We need our chefs to bring their best pots of chili so the congregation can try some and vote with their donations for the best pot. We will also have a bake sale and need donations of individually wrapped items. Come help us celebrate God's faithfulness and support a great cause! See Leslee Kirkconnell to let her know you are bringing your chili! OTHER NEWS: CHILDREN S MUSIC We are looking for new members to join our Children s Music at our church. It is a great way for elementary aged students to grow their faith and musical abilities! Children s Chimes and Choir meet each Sunday morning from 9:00-9:30 in the Hand Bells Room (next to the Choir Room). If you re interested in becoming a part of our musical family, contact Ellie Osborne at maryeosborne@yahoo.com or simply show up and we ll be happy to make room! IN RESPONSE TO THE HURRICANE that has impacted the Caribbean and the US, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance welcomes gifts to help in relief efforts. You can give through the church - please put Disaster Relief-PDA in the memo line. You can also give directly online at Your funds will go where most needed. Please know that Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has a strong record of careful stewardship of your funds - very little is needed for overhead, so more of your gifts help people in need. Thank you for your generosity and please keep those affected by this storm in your prayers. THE FRIDAY CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER GROUP meets at 10:30am on Fridays at the church. All are welcome! OUR NEWEST ART EXHIBIT features art by the youth of Warren County schools. Stop and see it today! THEOLOGY PUB for college students meets Thursdays at 7:00pm at Mellow Mushroom.
