1 People Look East! Service for the Lord s Day November 30, st Sunday of Advent Gathering Around the Word Striking of the Hour Welcome Prelude Now the Heavens Start to Whisper David Cherwien (see Hymn 94 for text) We Rise in Spirit and in Body from A Declaration of Faith Call To Worship People: Love the guest is on the way. Leader: Prepare! People: Prepare! Leader: Prepare the way of the Lord. Brothers, sweep the floors and set the tables. Sisters, tend the fires and light the candles. People: Let us make our houses as fair as we are able. Leader: Love the guest is on the way. People: Let us prepare the way of the Lord. Hymn 105 Advent Candle Lighting Ceremony Call to Confession People Look East BESANCON

2 Prayer of Confession Holy God, we confess that we do not walk in your light. We have not made ourselves ready for your Advent; we stray from the paths of peace. We neglect even the simple gifts we have to share with one another. Forgive us; deliver us; awaken us to your Word, so that we may be ready to welcome you with joy, in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Silence for Personal Confession Hymn Lord, have mercy upon us, Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. KYRIE Declaration of Good News Response Hymn 121 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in. Passing the Peace of Christ The risen Lord brought the gift of life-giving peace. Let us share it with one another. All Sit A Time with Young Disciples (11:00) Hearing the Word At The Party of the Resurrection In the ordinariness of the day-to-day I looked most intently at the faces of the Poor, consumed by hungry, squashed by humiliation, and in them I discovered Your face. Dom Helder Camara 1986 Prayer for Illumination Psaltery Reading Psalm 122 I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem; Jerusalem, built as a city that is at unity in itself. Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as is decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. For there are set the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls and tranquility within your palaces. For my kindred and companions sake, I will pray that peace be with you. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good. Anthem The Call Z. Randall Stroope All Stand Gospel Reading Revelation 3:20-22 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. All Sit Sermon The King s Surprising Standards Matthew Covington

3 Responding to the Word All Stand Response Hymn 105 People Look East BESANCON First Verse Only Affirmation of Faith A Declaration of Faith (10.2) All things will be renewed in Christ. In Christ God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish. We do not know when the final day will come. In our time we see only broken and scattered signs that the renewal of all things is under way. We do not yet see the end of cruelty and suffering in the world, the church, or our own lives. But we see Jesus as Lord. As he stands at the center of our history, we are confident he will stand at its end. He will judge all people and nations. Evil will be condemned and rooted out of God s good creation. There will be no more tears or pain. All things will be made new. The fellowship of human beings with God and each other will be perfected. All Sit Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering Offertory What Sweeter Music R.
