I believe this is a sure blessing from God. The Lord has brought us an opportunity to work together to fashion our church s future. The Session has secured the help of a consulting firm, called The Center for Healthy Churches, to work with us. The Director of the Center is Dr. Bill Wilson. He and a member of his regional support staff, Mr. Bill Owen, will be conducting interviews with our staff, our officers, and the members of our congregation. You will especially want to mark your calendar for the mornings of May 8 and 9, when interviews and discussions with all comers will be held. Out of these discussions will be derived a fresh vision and one we can all embrace together. Those days in May (and others to follow, as needed) may be the most important days that our church has had in some time. I m so glad this is happening. You may have noticed that the Session of our church hasn t declared the budget for The pledge totals from the fall stewardship campaign were insufficient to meet our intended mission benevolences and to guarantee a competitive salary for the Christian educator we hope to hire. In order to raise the necessary funds, the Session has, with the Deacons, entered into an Over And Above campaign. Our officers are making plans to increase their own pledges for Once this step is completed, the congregation will be asked to consider any Over And Above giving they may be able to do. Our church and its ministry are so important. We are proud of our officers for stepping up as they have. My work as your minister is easiest when there are no big changes to be made, when we are satisfied with the way things are, when everybody s polite, and there are no feathers ruffled. But I don t suppose that s really how we want things to be. We want to be moving ahead, accepting challenges, and making good on our commitments. Thank you for being that kind of church. It s not always easy, but it s worth the extra effort. Know you are loved. Matthew Page

Anniversary Celebration Organist Tom Moody Celebrates 50 Years of Service at Our Own Presbyterian Church Story by Laurel Wilson Photos by Bac Totrong From the Feb. 27, 2015 Bowling Green Daily News T om Moody began his musical education by learning piano in grade school, but it was the organ that captivated his attention. There was just something about hearing the different sounds of the organ and the pipes were kind of mystifying, he said. This year, Moody is celebrating his 50th anniversary as organist for The Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, where he began in 1965 at age 27. I ve been Presbyterian all my life, so the denomination suits me, he said. I don t think I ve ever missed but one service. It s the spiritual side as well as the pleasure side of working with people (that I love). Wayne Pope, the church s choir director, said Moody is a joy to work with. Being studied the way Tom is, his dynamic adds a tremendous amount to the service, Pope said. He picks his music to relate to the theme of the service. The Rev. Matthew Covington, pastor of The Presbyterian Church, said Moody adds another element to the services that reinforces each week s message. Tom has a great vision for worship, Covington said. The power of the instrument brings a great substance and dignity to worship. Moody, who lives in Franklin, studied organ at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., and the University of Kentucky. As a classically trained musician, he always loved the idea of playing in church, because of the variety of music it allows him to play. Worship, you might say, is a serious business, Moody said. But I Tom Moody also play at weddings and funerals. I enjoy those different moods the joy of worship, the somberness of a funeral. Classical music is what he enjoys playing the most. I love playing hymns, he said. I very much enjoy and appreciate Bach. Moody said his perch behind the pulpit and below the choir suits him. I rather like the hiddenness, he said. In the 1970s, he helped the church pick out the pipe organ that s still used today. In 2010, the organ was named in his honor. It was a very humbling experience, Moody said. In addition to being an organist, he also taught English for 30 years at Franklin-Simpson High School, but even after retiring from teaching, he continued as organist and has no plans to stop. It never occurred to me that he would stay 50 years, he said. The 50 years go by very fast. The Presbyterian Church is hosting a 50th Page 2 Continued on page 3

Anniversary Celebration Continued from page 2 anniversary celebration for Moody on March 22 at the church at 1003 State Street. Moody is much more than an organist, Covington said. He s also a pastoral assistant, answers the church phone and is an ordained elder. Tom is just the consummate churchman, Covington said. He really cares about the people in the church. He really ministers to them in a very personal way by taking prayer requests. Everything Moody does stems from doing the right thing for the congregation, Pope said. He loves the church like it s a family member of his, he said. He considers everyone there a family member. T wo organ pieces were commissioned in honor of Tom Moody s 50 years of loving, faithful and loyal service as organist of our church. They were performed by Mike Kanan during worship on March 22, the day of the anniversary celebration in Tom s honor. The pieces were Come, Christians, Join to Sing, arranged by Thomas R. Vozzella, and Emmaus Fantasia for Organ by Vozzella. I am writing a hurried THANK YOU in order to meet a newsletter deadline. The intent is to express my sincerest gratitude for the preparation, forethought and organization of many forces for the March twenty-second celebration of my fifty years as organist. It was a glorious day in my life. I do believe it has finally dawned on me that the halfcentury time is really true. Time flies when we are having fun. Truly, my life has centered on serving this congregation, and you of the congregation have been so kind to me all these years. MANY THANKS FOR WHO YOU ARE AND FOR WHAT YOU MEAN TO ME. Thomas N. Moody Photo by Bac Totrong of Bowling Green Daily News Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Psalm 105:2 Page 3

Presbyterian Women A Margaret Stein s a child of this church, it's only fitting that Margaret can often be found organizing activities for our congregation's kids. Her connections in this church community run deep, and she has experienced many of her major life events in our sanctuary at Tenth and State. While born in Nashville, she moved to Bowling Green in 1975 when her dad, John Fitts, began his cardiology practice. She and her younger brother, Nelson, were By Emily Davenport and joined the Sunday morning circle. In 2005, Nate Stein was born; he was baptized by Matthew Covington. Three short years later, her mother, Jerre Fitts, died of a stroke. Dr. Covington's memorial service for her described Jerre's dedication to our church and her constant pursuit of perfection. Her presence is still missed. As Nate grew, Margaret became more involved with the children's activities in our church. This lead to her nomi- baptized by Tom Kennedy that summer. This started a trend of her relationships with our ministers. She fondly remembers acolyting and being confirmed by Alan McSween. After graduating from Bowling Green High School, Margaret headed to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, and then on to Margaret Stein and her son, Nate nation as an elder, which she is still serving. She hopes to keep young families and children top of mind within the leadership of the church. She additionally currently serves on the Christian Education Committee, as well as the Leadership Team with The Center for Healthy Churches. New York City. She returned to home in 2000 to marry Jeff Stein, an attorney originally from Louisville. (Ed Hurley officiated the service.) Margaret took a position with Pfizer, which If you ever need to find her, just check the bulletin. More likely than not, Margaret s phone and are listed as a contact for the next kids function! she still holds today. She also became a deacon, Page 4

Presbyterian Women Our Presbyterian Women have many exciting things going on this spring. Here are some of the things they ve done and will be doing: March 22 Celebration for Tom Moody Many women of TPC were involved in planning, decorating, and providing food for this wonderful event in the life of the church, as it celebrated 50 years of service by our church organist and staff member Tom Moody. March 31 Lenten Luncheon PW were responsible for hosting lunch following the Lenten service at TPC. Blakey and Duffy Hayes prepared a lovely meal, the PW set the tables and served the food, and Sam Evans and other Fellowship Committee members provided cleanup. April 16 The Spring Gathering of PW This will be at First Presbyterian Church, Murray, KY. Call Nancy Moore for further information or pick up a flyer from Cheryl in the front office. April 19 Celebration of Women Our own PW s Jan Albert will deliver the sermon at each service as TPC observes a Celebration of Women. Other women will participate throughout the service. Jan s sermon will be on Hope and Joy: The Journey of Ruth. April 29 The Girls Night Out Our Committee has set Wednesday, April 29 for this event. Page 5

Missions Page 6 Bicycle Resource Center Removes Lack-of-Transportation Barrier W hen you contribute to the Presbyterian Church, you are helping people in our local community and throughout the world. The One Great Hour of Sharing offering is dedicated near the end of Lent or on Easter Sunday. Three ministries benefit from this one gift: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self-Development of People, and the Presbyterian Hunger Fund. The following information is from pcusa.org: Self-Development of People affirms God s concern for people by participating in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed and disadvantage people by establishing partnerships with lowincome community groups. In 2004, transportation costs were a major problem for low-income adults and youth in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There was simply no inexpensive way to get from here to there. A lack of affordable transportation made it difficult for them to get to work, to school, to the doctor, or to any of the other places to which most of us usually go. A group of Santa Fe residents who had transportation difficulties began to talk about how to solve it, and came up with a great idea! As Tomas Rivera, one of the founders, tells the story, the group formed when a core group realized we had the common problem of a lack of transportation, and decided to work together toward a common solution. Many of us rode our bikes as a way to get around and found it to be a first step toward solving that problem in an economical and environmentally friendly way. However, we also found that because we couldn t afford to buy a new bike or pay for repairs on our own, that without the ability to do our own maintenance, bicycle riding was not as reliable as we need it to be. Inspired by recycle-a-bike programs around the country, we began teaching ourselves bicycle mechanics and gathering donations of bicycles that would otherwise go unused. Interest in what we were doing grew rapidly and we saw the need to find our own pace and work with a broader community. We solicited a local non-profit to allow us to use a small piece of their parking lot to operate out of. In six months, we gathered materials and constructed a small but functional bike shop. We use the model we began with to meet other people in our situation and to get them involved in the program. When the economy collapsed in 2008, it became clearer than ever that we had to expand our focus past bicycles to deal with transportation issues at the root cause. The Bicycle Resource Center provides an immediate and direct solution to the lack of transportation for our community and serves as an entry point to begin collectively addressing poor transportation policies and outdated city planning at their root. Chainbreaker members worked with local officials to develop a program that provides free bus passes to people who purchase a bicycle or receive one through the Bicycle Resource Center. Continued on page 7

Missions Continued from page 6 Members of the Bicycle Resource Center say that the project has changed their lives. For example, Rivera tells the story of a man who was homeless and without transportation when he first encountered the Bicycle Resource Center two years ago. He was working as a day laborer and the place he needed to be each morning to get work was too far to walk from where he was staying. In addition, the nature of day laboring required him to be mobile to get to work sites. He was losing work each day because of his lack of transportation. He received a bicycle and learned enough mechanical skills to keep it functioning as a safe and reliable means of transportation. Through the Bicycle Resource Center, he was able to continuously obtain work and save enough money to move into an apartment. Today, he remains active in the Bicycle Resource Center as a mechanic instructor, also serves as a board member, and has become a leader in campaigns to support public transportation. Since 1970, the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People has been a partner in grassroots projects around the world that seek to improve the lives of poor and underserved people. Our mission has been, and continues to be, a God -inspired work toward the self-development of economically poor, oppressed and disadvantaged people who own, control and benefit directly from such projects. By Steve Todd S eventeen Thursdays, Nov. 20-March 12, we opened our doors to welcome 163 homeless guests who needed a warm, safe place to stay on cold nights. Through our participation in the Room In The Inn program we served 320-plus hot suppers and breakfasts, got help from 68 volunteers, and tallied close to 1,000 volunteer hours at and away from the church. Thanks to members of our congregation who generously provided supplies when needed. A special thanks to shift coordinators who made certain that each week all was ready to welcome the homeless to our church. They are Judy Whitson (innkeepers/sleepers); Gary Ahrendt (dinner cooks); Doug Humphrey and Ann Rudolph (dinner hosts); Lee Truman (housekeeping); Cathey Green (breakfast hosts); Diane Simmons (publicity/communications); and Larry Warden, (designated smoke breaks host). Last but not least, a special thanks to Dr. Covington, who on faith knew we could get the job done and committed our church to opening our doors once a week. We were one of only a few churches to do so. At the very first organizational meeting for this effort last fall, Gary Ahrendt and Diane Simmons set up the structure for coordinators and responsibilities that served us so well. On the first Thursday evening, one homeless man stated what we believe many felt when he said, It feels so good to be safe in a serene environment. This is truly a wonderful ministry for our church and those who participated have had their lives enriched because of the experience. Page 7

Missions B efore you dismiss this article as a hardware advertisement, let me assure you it is a mission report, but with an angle. A great idea can get lost in conversation unless people organize and use the tools necessary for success. Room In The Inn is one example. We can all agree that providing winter shelter is a necessary, humane act. We talked about it for years until HOTEL INC gave us a workable model. We needed cots, pillows, blankets, food, and bathrooms; hosts, cooks, and housekeepers. To keep track of that list, we used pen and paper. To manage cots and linens, we used washing machines and dryers. To provide food, we used kitchen utensils and appliances, and so on. It is easy to see how building a Habitat for Humanity house or installing a water treatment system requires particular skills and tools, but not so easy to recognize the details in the organizational setup. When we go to work at a Habitat site, our tools and materials are conveniently on site, because someone arranged for their delivery and because the materials and tools came from one of many local supply houses. By Diane Simmons, Chair of Missions In contrast, tools and materials for installing or maintaining a water treatment system in a Guatemalan jungle are not readily accessible because the Guatemalan supply network is weak, a logistics problem Living Waters is working on solving with a challenge grant of $25,000. Our mission committee voted to give $1,000 toward the Guatemalan supply network solution because to maintain their systems, people need accessible hardware. Our church's $1,000 toward the Guatemalan supply network matched other funds, at last report at $16,000 and growing. Although Room In The Inn costs could have been as high as $700, the reimbursement costs for laundry and supplies has been held under $200. Not because it didn't cost $700 or more to run Room In The Inn, but because volunteers paid directly out of pocket for expenses. Soon, Missions Committee volunteers will be sorting through church closets to save necessary items, recycle useful items, discard outdated items, and build shelves for more efficient storage. Think hands, hammers, carts, wheelbarrows, and trucks, and, yes, money, but not too much.
