1 When people dwell in unity, it is like precious oil running down upon the beard of Aaron! Psalm 133:1-2 Striking of the Hour S e r v i c e for the Lord s Da y April 12, 2015 The Second Sunday of Easter Gathering Around the Word Prelude Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain arr. Wilbur Held Welcome What does it mean to you that Jesus cannot be captured by death? We Rise in Spirit and in Body Call to Worship Leader: Jesus was taken down from the cross, only to rise up again! People: Put away in a tomb, he conquered death, Leader: Jesus story is told in a book, yet he exceeds what words can tell. People: He is the living word of God. Leader: We have tried to hold him in our thoughts, but he cannot be captured there. People: No prison can hold him. No tomb can thwart the miracle. Leader: His life is our liberty. People: His love changes our lives. Hymn 232 Jesus Christ is Risen Today EASTER HYMN After Easter, our admission of sin is especially aware of the lengths to which God in Christ has gone to save us. Prayer of Adoration and Confession (Unison) Merciful God, who sent Jesus to the cross but then raised him in glory, we thank you for your saving goodness. Where we have refused to live with the imprint of the resurrection in our lives, we ask to be forgiven and changed. Forgive us for acting in cruel and selfish ways, for our carelessness, and for every sin, small and large. Forgive us for acting as if we had no need of a savior. Forgive us for neglecting to honor and serve the Lord. Give us strength for the living of new lives, Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

2 Declaration of Good News Hymn 233 The Day of Resurrection! LANCASHIRE Now let the heavens be joyful, Let earth the song begin Let the round world keep triumph, And all that is therein; Let all things seen and unseen Their notes of gladness blend, For Christ the Lord is risen, Our joy that hath no end! Passing of the Peace By words and gesture, we share signs of peace and reconciliation. A Time with Young Disciples (11:00) Prayer for Illumination Hearing the Word The world God has made is full of miracle and wonder. This psalm is almost playful in its use of metaphor. Psaltery Reading Psalm 133 How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! it is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore. Refrain Refrain Anthem Christ is Risen, Christ is Living Austin C. Lovelace We are a fellowship of forgiven souls. New Testament Reading I John 1:1-2:2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (continued)

3 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Sermon Oil on the Beard! Matthew Covington Responding to the Word Response Hymn 397 O Look and Wonder HOW VERY GOOD Affirmation of Faith (I Corinthians 15:1-6; Mark 16:9; Matthew 16:16; Revelation 22:13; John 20:28) This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast: That Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he appeared first to the women, then to Peter, then to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end; He is our Lord and our God. Amen. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer The Offering Offertory The World Will Know Tim Shepherd Wayne Pope, guitar Prayer of Dedication Bearing the Word into the Created World Closing Hymn 399 God Welcomes All THEMBA AMEN Sing Through four times.
