2 VETERAN S PROJECT The Veteran s Memorial Project in Windsor is sponsoring a Student s Luncheon at the Serbian Centre on Nov. 10th. They are looking for folks who might be interested in sponsoring a table. The student luncheon will pair students and veterans. If you would like to donate, the cost is $500. Please consult: info@windsorhistoricalsociety.com or call for details. Property Management Some of our trees are dying from a bug infestation. We are going to bring in a tree expert to deal with the problem. On Monday, Sept. 25th the roof repairs commenced. This is covered by insurance except for the deductible. On October 2nd, the leaking repairs will start. Their start date was pushed back to avoid overlap with the roof workers. Restoration repairs should take about 4 to 5 weeks. We are looking into new door sweeps and insulation in the hopes of keeping out most of the bugs. We are also looking to get more LED lights in fluorescent style for the new year, when the prices comes down. An example of the improved lights can be seen in the main office. Kim Anber, Chair Praise Him The Lamb Who s Slain Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:30.
3 Age Unlimited In everything give thanks 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Wow! Life is full of surprises! The last week of August brought a gigantic storm and flooding and the following day the mail delivery included a personal letter to each of the Banwell families to announce Alex and Linda s retirement in June As Jim Wheeler said, this was a wonderful way to get the news. A letter of intention to each of us at the same time. When I spoke to Dr. Moir he assured me everything is status quo for our Age Unlimited Group He will continue to open our meetings in prayer; chat with our members; read the Christmas story and be one of our presenters at our April meeting. Linda and Alex will share their wonderful BON VOYAGE summer vacation trip to ports of call on their Baltic Cruise. Age Unlimited Group will meet on Wednesday, October 11th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel Room. We will have as our theme: Thanksgiving Praise. Dr. Brock VanDyke will be our special guest speaker. In the 1990 s, Brock and his twin brother attended First Baptist Church where their mother was the choir director. Brock was in a band led by John Burrows and this group played in Temple Baptist sanctuary on several occasions. Our meeting theme is Thanksgiving Praise and this will be expressed in our program and singing. Our Hostesses prepare a delicious lunch to complete our morning. Members of the team include: Yvonne Eberle, Penny Bain, Madelon Kidd, Dorothy Allan, Pam Beemer, and Carol Middaugh. To cover food expenses we invite you to participate in a freewill offering. Claude Daniels offers grace prior to our luncheon. There will be a sign-up sheet on the coffee counter until Sunday, October 8th. Invite a friend and enjoy the warm fellowship of Thanksgiving Praise. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto Him and bless His name. Psalm 100:4 Henry Nurse, Coordinator Submitted by Joan Fulmer FACES IN THE CROWD Many thanks to our Hospitality Team led by Yvonne Eberle who provided a wonderful dinner meal for the Darin Martin Band on the occasion of the concert on Sept. 16th. Thanks ladies! We rejoice with Ed and Zora Gilmore as they presented their daughter Katelyn Emma on Sunday, Sept. 17th and themselves for parental dedication. Finally, the sympathy of the congregation is extended to Gerry and Deborah Freeman, Chris & Kathy Freeman and family upon the passing of Dr. Michael Freeman, who is married to Gerry s sister Sharon. Dr. Freeman was an active Christian layperson, as well as a popular physician in the Toronto area.
4 Worship Notes As we head into the month of October, we are definitely in a fall feel, and look forward to coming together to worship our God. The pastor will conclude the message series on The Parables of Growth, Grace & Crisis, as well as addressing the Thanksgiving theme on October 8th. Starting October 15th will be a series based on 1 Peter entitled A Life of Faith. As always, we will enjoy the contributions of our musicians under the leadership of our Minister of Music, Ian McGregor Smith. May the Lord continue to bless us as we gather together. Diane McBeth, Executive Director of Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec has accepted our invitation to be our guest speaker for our Anniversary Sunday, January 28, Ms. McBeth will also be directing a workshop, for women's ministries, on the Saturday, January 27th. Because what hurting people need, perhaps most of all, is to know that they are not alone, that someone else will hear their story and will love them just as much after they tell it. They need to know that their pain does not mean God has turned his back on them. Amy Simpson, author of Troubled Minds. T GETHER meets on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Hello Friends, I was blessed to be able to attend Keith And Kristen Getty s Sing Conference in Nashville the week of Sept 18 and to say that it was inspiring is definitely an understatement. The conference dealt with many facets of Worship including discussions and presentations on promoting a culture of congregational singing, building the next generation, family worship, use of technology in worship, new worship music, hymns and much more. As minister of music here at Banwell it is my responsibility to ensure that your worship experience on Sunday morning is fulfilling and uplifting. It needs to always be honest and engaging and should be like a feast that we engage in each week that is prepared throughout the week by all of us individually through prayer and song. Worship starts at home and is something that we all must think about and prepare for throughout the week whether you are a singer on the praise team, a choir member, or a worshipper in the congregation. I am thrilled to share all that I experienced and learned with each and every one of you. Lets keep on singing! Yours in Christ, A Friend By Ron Kalkhourst What is a friend who is part of your life? He or she is there for you in all of your strife. They make the world better and help with the little things. They make you feel important and make you lift your wings. They are behind you in everything you try, And sometimes it makes you wonder and you ask, why? "They are always a part of your life s important times, Because both together, you make these minutes unwind. They give you advice which you don t want to hear, But these are the times they make sure they are near. They laugh with you in good times and cry with you when times are bad, So cherish your friends always and try not to make them mad. Be happy. Ian, Minister of Music

10 My Back Pages I am working on this article on the day we will reach the autumnal equinox, indicating the advent of fall but you d never know it by the weather. The forecasters are predicting another hot day, similar to the ones we ve been having for over a week. The golf courses are full, people are out walking in the evening, I can hear the neighbour kids across the street enjoying their new pool for all you can hear and see, it looks like a summer day in August. But you don t have to look far to see the signs of season change. The leaves on my weeping birch tree are beginning to change colour; we re losing our daylight earlier and earlier these days; and I noticed this morning that the municipal workers dug up the bases at the local baseball diamond a particularly sad sight! While we can t avoid change, perhaps we can help ourselves by learning to recognize it. Fortunately, for those of us who are followers of Jesus, we have a way of dealing with the change that life brings upon us. Although the interests and habits of people in our world go through various stages, there is something remarkably constant about the things associated with our faith the nature of our God, the continued relevancy of the life of Jesus, the ministry of the church and, of course, the scriptures which provide us with guidance and wisdom each day. A few years ago, I made a realization that has helped me in life and ministry. Instead of being surprised by a changing situation or attitude I began to realize that these episodes were becoming the norm so I began to simply expect them! Then, if something actually went the way I had hoped or expected, I was pleasantly surprised. Taking this approach provided the added benefit that I stop panicking when these things happened and have become more of a problem solver than being in denial. It was also amazing to behold how these sometimes less than ideal changes seemed to be used by the Father to bring about good things in life. Some of us (me included) would like to hang on to these summer days for as long as possible. But the reality is that we don t live in a warm climate rather, we are a people who experience the four seasons, and there are some good things about that. The brisk breezes of autumn will soon arrive and with them some wonderful opportunities to ponder the Father s good gifts to us, not the least of which will be another harvest season. However, the weather is one thing and real life is another. The unexpected changes we experience are not always refreshing sometimes they bring disappointment, heartache and require some difficult adjustments. But we worship a God who has promised to be with us in all things. The lyrics to a great song of the faith come to mind praise the Lord, He never changes. No matter whether you enjoy days of stability or challenge, may you continue to sense His holy presence in your life.
