2 Highlights of the Journey Friendship is an important part of our life journey. She is a friend to many, and also Jesus. She has a fantastic family; has been a productive family business worker, been on many boards and committees; done volunteer work; travelled extensively and been a tireless worker at church in choirs, hospitality and prayer in her eight decades of abundant living, caring, considerate, compassionate daily lifestyle. These are the highlights of the marvelous journey of: MADELON KIDD Madelon was born in Windsor. Her parents Alice and Walter Warren were thrilled to have a beautiful daughter. As a youngster, she attended King Edward Elementary School and enjoyed her high school experiences at Walkerville Collegiate Institute. Following graduation, she began employment in her Dad s business at Ford Cleaners and later began IXL Cleaners when it was established on Tecumseh Road at Moy. She was an excellent business woman, who did banking, budgeting and payroll for 31 employees. Madelon met the love of her life and they were married in December 1954 by Rev. Dr. Harry Nobles. They celebrated their 60 th anniversary in They were blessed with two sons: Allan Jr. and Richard. They are now the adoring grandparents of two grandsons and a namesake granddaughter Madelon Kidd. (Maddie). During her youth, Madelon enjoyed many hobbies including ice skating, travel and became a passionate reader. Madelon was baptized by Rev. Norman Hovland. She participated in many church activities: Temple Choir, was a member of the Pastoral Care and Finance Committee, travelled with Donna Wilcox and the youth choir and became a deacon at Temple and member of the Vision Team. The Kidds have enjoyed wonderful vacations and travelled extensively on unique holidays including Florida, Jamaica, Alaska, U.K. Russia, Mediteranean area, Israel, Spain, Iceland, Caribbean and Transatlantic cruises and Riverboat cruise. Madelon has been on many boards and committees and done volunteer work. She was an active Board member at Grace Hospital when it closed. She was invited to join the new Board of Directors for Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital. Madelon has also been a volunteer for the Maycourt Thrift Shop. She helped numerous people find the perfect garment and accessories. As part of the Temple Vision Team, Madelon worked for the move to our Banwell Community Church. For 15 years she has been an active member. God has blessed her with many gifts of the Holy Spirit and all have adapted to serve her Lord. To commence each day, she has a devotional quiet time and a lengthy prayer list. She exhibits her love by serving on Rev. Dr. Alex Moir s Pastoral Care Team and takes a treat to the shut-in members that she and Penny Bain visit. She has been gifted with a marvelous voice and was a member of Banwell Singers. On the second Sunday of each month, she has been a greeter to welcome people to our service. For 15 years she has participated on the hospitality team of the church and as a hostess for our Seniors Ministry Age Unlimited. Each Sunday she provides faithful transportation for three friends, and also to Age Unlimited meetings. Madelon has experienced health problems, but God has granted her recovery to continue her purpose for Him on her Incredible Journey. Rejoice in the Lord always. Let your gentleness be evident to all. Philippians 4:4,5 Submitted by Joan Fulmer

5 Worship Notes I hope that you ll really feel like turning the corner into spring during the month as we come together for worship. Since the Lenten season will have arrived by the first of March, the Pastor will be preaching a message series on Jesus and Life in the Gospel of John. As always, our church musicians under the leadership of Minister of Music, Ian McGregor Smith, will lead us in our musical worship. May the Lord continue to bless us as we gather together for worship! March 5th March 12th March 19th March 26th Life There (John 3:16-21) Only One Source John 5:31-40 Life Here. A few of us were honoured to attend the Memorial service for Lorenzo Brown on Thursday, Feb. 9th in Detroit. As many of you know, Lorenzo was a member of our musical team here at Banwell. We were blessed to have him in our presence for so many years. Special thanks to the Hospitality Team and our exceptional cake baker, Pam Beemer, for the delicious cake and cookies served on Anniversary Sunday. Grant and Cari Fairley became the proud grandparents of a baby boy, Lucas Jacob Fairley, on Feb. 15th, born in Liverpool, England to Doug and Stephh Fairley. Special Offerings Update... Thank you to members of our congregation for supporting some special offerings during the last few weeks. As is our custom, December Benevolent offering is dedicated to the Fellowship Fund of our Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ) Churches. By contributing to this fund, we make Christmas merrier for retired pastors, missionaries and their families, as well as some of our students. Further, our Christmas offering was very well supported this year, raising $3, The proceeds were sent to the Sunparlour Pregnancy Resource Centre. The folks at the centre help many young women in our region bring birth to full term. Thank you for your support.

10 My Back Pages One of the publications that I receive regularly is the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Mayo Clinic, it is a wellness/hospital complex located in Rochester, Minnesota with branch locations in Arizona and Florida. Founded many years ago by two brothers who were physicians, it has provided advice and treatment for thousands of patients from around the world. The newsletter provides advice and information on a wide range of health issues. One of the most recent editions addressed the issue of depression. In the article the writer summarized the various types of depression and the possible treatments. However, it was the last paragraph of the piece that gave me reason to pause and reflect. Take care of yourself eat well, exercise, practice good sleep habits, mind your spiritual needs, and engage with those who love and support. It was the part about spiritual needs that caught my notice. That a respected healthcare institution like the Mayo Clinic recognizes the importance of faith and spirituality was encouraging to me. As I may have said many times before, if self-development remains a concern for the majority of the human race, then spirituality plays an important role. People spend ample amounts of money and time keeping fit, taking financial advice, ensuring good emotional health, but often pay little attention to the faith side of the ledger. What the article is basically saying is that, when it comes to good general health, spirituality deserves more consideration. It was attending a wellness workshop at a theological seminary a few years ago that got me thinking about the role of faith in wellness. What kind of an impact does this concept have on the mission and ministry of the local church? As the apostle encourages us to always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have (I Peter 3:15a) could not the topic of total wellness form a part of such an answer? It didn t take me long perusing my current events file to find articles from news sources about the effects of faith on our health. A headline from the December 27th 2004 edition of the Windsor Star reads Longevity secret: Go to church. An Associate Press release from within that last five years chronicles a crime scene where a hostage taken in an Atlanta suburb reads a portion of Rick Warren s book The Purpose Driven Life to her captor and convinces him to let her go free. A 1988 clinical study on prayer conducted in a San Francisco hospital reported that coronary patients prayed for by randomly selected strangers fared better than their counterparts. All of this leads to the conclusion that our effort to make the ministry of Banwell Community Church as effective as possible may be seen as contributing to the general wellness of our community. May the Lord continue to lead us to methods and ministries that guide people into the paths of righteousness as the psalmist says not only for the purpose of salvation, but for their good health.
