For the rest of the month Pastor will be preaching on three different biblical passages which we hope will be helpful to all involved. Of course, our musicians will continue to lead us with good Christian music. May the Lord continue to bless us as we gather together in worship! 5 Pastoral Care & Worship We are already into our Spring season and our Committee has been busy with our responsibilities. One of the joys of being on this Committee is having the privilege of interviewing prospective members. On Sunday, May 15th, ten people entered the waters of baptism and several have requested membership. It is a wonderful thing to witness people's faith. By the end of May we will have our new Sound Board installed. This should not only improve our audio for the church but will give John Goodwin a lot less hassle each Sunday as he scrambles to balance the sound from the old Board. Thank you John for your dedication each and every Sunday. It seems like we just celebrated Anniversary Sunday and now we are planning the church picnic for June 12th. We have selected that day for you to "meet the staff". Our dedicated staff will be eating together and we ask you to stop by and say hello, especially if you have not met them personally. This will be a great time for you to introduce yourself to our new Director of Youth Ministries, Karen Saldaña. In July we will say good-bye to Heather Heuston as she completes a six year commitment to our Committee. Heather has been a faithful and dedicated member of our team and we will miss her. We serve on this Committee because God has called us. We do it with dedication and joy. Submitted by Donna Soper Pastoral Care & Worship THANK YOU MEN'S MINISTRY On Saturday evening, April 30th, the women of the church were invited to an evening of entertainment including a beverage and delicious desserts by the Men's Ministry. For those of you who didn't attend you sure missed a delightful evening. We were greeted at the door, escorted to our seat and waited on the whole evening. The men, dressed like waiters in a fine restaurant, treated us like royalty. We didn't have to lift a finger. We were entertained by two young and talented vocalists singing Broadway hits. When the evening concluded, we were assisted with our coats and escorted to the door with a fond farewell. Thank you men for making us feel so special. Most sincerely, Donna Soper
6 Very Special Thanks To: SEAN DOYLE We have been worshipping here at Banwell for over twelve years and for the majority of those years Sean has served as our Treasurer. Sean is about to retire from this very important and demanding responsibility and we extend our sincere appreciation for the excellent contribution he has made. Well done Sean. Thank you for your service to our Lord and this congregation. GERRY FREEMAN Have you noticed our Sanctuary, Chapel, Nursery area and Kitchenette are much brighter recently? Our thanks to Gerry who brought his electrical know-how and ability to operate a lift in order to change our light bulbs to LED. These new lights not only improve the brightness significantly, but will save up to 70% on our cost of electricity. Thanks to Gerry for spending two days to complete this important work and for the significant savings he was able to obtain for the church in renting the lift. We also appreciate Tom Holmes helping hand in this project. HAL HERZOG You may have noticed the small communion table in the Chapel that came from Olivet Baptist Church was badly stained and marked. Hal has a very unique skill and we are blessed that he applied his craft and the table looks new with the beautiful finish created in Hal s shop. Thanks Hal for sharing your special skill with Banwell and for the recent pew repair. The next time you are in the Chapel take a moment to see Hal s excellent workmanship. We are blessed to have many share their talents for our Lord s work. Thanks to all those who serve. Jim Wheeler ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks Ladies! The men appreciated the ladies support of our Dessert Event, and it appeared that everyone s tastebuds did too! Thanks for coming. Thank You To all those who supported our Aline-Carere Bowl-a-thon. We raised $2, to help send kids to Camp Hermosa this summer!
7 Hospitality Team Update Dear friends: As head of the Hospitality Team of our church, it is my responsibility to recruit folks to help with the occasional luncheon we re called upon to set up. For years now, I ve been contacting the same faithful few who are always willing to help in a time of need. It is my hope that there are other people out there who would be willing to lend a hand, if asked, to prepare a loaf of sandwiches or a pan of squares and take some of the load off the regulars. If you see your way fit to help in this manner, I would greatly appreciate you letting me know by calling (519) so I m well equipped with some new names when the time comes again that we re asked to be there for our church family. Hoping you d like to be a part of this important ministry. In His service, Yvonne Eberle FACES IN THE CROWD Congratulations to the following individuals who witnessed to their faith in Christ through the waters of baptism on Sunday, May 15th: Christa Braccio, Rick Dinis, Ruben Kralik, Devin McCarthy, Kaitlyn McCarthy, Riley McCarthy, Alison Mundle, Kyrn Page, Jacqueline Williams and Debbie Thrasher. The sympathy of the congregation is extended to Neal Clinansmith upon the passing of his father Charles (Keith) Clinansmith on May 1, SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE SUMMARY Thanks to so many of you who attended our Sunday Night Live event on Sunday, April 17th. Alan Brown and I are especially thankful for Janice Richardson who was our guest musician on that evening. We are so accustomed to Janice sharing with us in the worship service and of course we are familiar with her classical training, but we were thrilled to hear her rendition of so many pop standards on that night. As well, those of you who attended were so generous providing materials for Hiatus House. The back of my SUV was full of groceries and personal products, which I delivered later that week. We also were able to share with Hiatus House some Tim Horton s cards and some cash. Our next event will be held Sunday, Nov. 6th at 7 p.m. with our guest artist Emily Lemmon. Alan and I would also like to thank all those who made the event possible: John Goodwin and Deborah Doyle in the Sound Booth, Linda Moir with Lights, Ellen and Tracy Doyle providing refreshments and Jim Wheeler on Security. Thanks to everyone and see you all next time! Respectfully submitted, Alex

10 My Back Pages Having just come off our spring baptismal experience yesterday, it leads me to think about the diversity represented in that group of folks. If we add the ones who took our spring class of instruction who had been baptized earlier in life, it adds up to 20 people of various ages and experiences who went through the process of membership/baptism this spring. The fact that it represents our largest class ever is worth noting but I think even more interesting is to track how the Spirit works in the lives of individuals who come to know the Lord. For some it was clear that they were taking this step quite early in their lives. For others it was something they had wanted to do for some time, but the timing didn t quite seem to be right until now. There were a couple of those baptized for whom this represented a major break from the traditions of their own family. For many of those joining our church as members, the process required a fair bit of thought and prayer because becoming an official member of a church is a harder decision today than it was many years ago. I always keep a running list of those who express an interest in baptism and/or church membership, as was the case on this occasion. But as the day drew closer more and more folks wanted to be included. There was a mother and a daughter, three siblings from the same family, four friends who have come to Banwell from another church in our area, and a Mom and Dad with a young family. Our youth group was well represented, as well as a young teacher who has been with us for years. There were two couples who are a part of our ministry here at Banwell who just felt it was time to join the church, as well as a single lady who had recently come to attend Banwell. Suddenly my list had grown from 6 or 7 to double figures! The fact that our baptism was held on Pentecost Sunday was very special as well. This is the Sunday which the church has traditionally used to celebrate the presence of God in our midst. But it s the unpredictability of the Spirit that has caused me to reflect on this occasion. When Jesus visited with the religious leader Nicodemus, he compared the Spirit to the wind and how it blows where it pleases (John 3:8). So it was with this particular group, as they felt led to connect with Banwell and/or give witness to their faith through the waters of baptism all for different reasons. It s my hope that we can continue to be flexible as we respond to how the Spirit is moving through the lives of those to whom we minister. Whenever someone shows an interest in being baptized or joining the church, we try to respond as quickly as possible. In fact, there is a notice currently running in our weekly bulletin, inviting those who may be so interested at the present time of a new opportunity. Please let me know if you feel God leading you in this way. Devotedly, your pastor Alex
