2 PASTORAL CARE AND WORSHIP It was certainly a pleasure to have Mrs. Diane McBeth, Executive Director for the Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec, as our guest speaker for Anniversary Sunday. Her message on how to discern that it is God s voice speaking to us, by first surrendering to Him, was well received. She also made herself available after the luncheon to meet with the some women of the church to advise them and answer questions on how to grow their ministry. I couldn t help but notice the wonderful fellowship during our luncheon as everyone was mingling and talking. Thanks to our Hospitality Team and friends for supplying such a delicious lunch, our faithful men for setting up and taking down the tables and to our clean-up crew who stayed after to make sure everything was spic and span before leaving the church. Our Committee has had the pleasure of interviewing five prospective members for Banwell since the New Year. This is one of the responsibilities we take on with pleasure because it is so interesting to hear each individual s faith story. I have been told by many people how inviting our church is from the moment they enter our doors and are greeted with a smiling face that says we re glad to see you this morning. Thank you to all the Greeters and Ushers who serve joyfully each Sunday. I know we have had a very cold winter so far but there is always warmth within the walls of Banwell because of God s love that shines through us. Chair - Kevin Andrews Members - Marsha Campbell, John Goodwin. Deborah Martel, Donna Soper CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to Cari Fairley who received the first Community Champion Award from Mayor Dilkens for her selfless commitment and tireless dedication to making Windsor a better place to live. Her incredible acts of kindness also recognized as well as her shining example of a true community champion.

3 WORSHIP NOTES As we move into the month of March, we look forward to the advent of spring and some wonderful occasions of worship together here at Banwell. The Pastor will begin the month preaching from one of the most famous passages in the Bible, Romans 5, and then end the month with a special Palm Sunday message. In between those dates, Dave Page will fill our pulpit as the pastor will be serving on a short-term mission assignment with the Kwok s in Thailand. As always, our musicians will be led by our Minister of Music, Ian McGregor Smith during this Lenten season. May the Lord continue to bless us as we gather together for worship. An invitation is extended to all Banwell congregation family, friends or neighbours. The outing will be on June 28th. Bus cost is $45.00 per person. All adults welcome to join us. We plan to visit the St. Jacob s Market and have lunch. Speak to Madelon Kidd or Joan Fulmer for more information. Blizzard 2018 On February 2 nd the Illuminate Student Ministries Senior Youth Group and 7 leaders went up to Muskoka Woods for the CBOQ Blizzard 2018 event. There were over 400 Youth and Leaders from our CBOQ churches gathered to have fun, share and grow their faith in Jesus. The theme for the event was Illuminate and we talked extensively on how we as believers and followers of Jesus can show His light of Hope to the World, which is so full of despair. We also talked about abiding in Him and how we can do that to continue to grow our relationship. Matt Adams was our speaker for the weekend. Matt is an evangelical Illusionist and he uses his talents to spread the word of Jesus. Life Support was the worship band and they did a great job getting us up on our feet to some of our favourite worships songs, Oceans, and some new ones too. The youth from Banwell or Branwell, as we were mistakenly called, dove head first into all and every activity. We got to spend lots of time in the snow, cross-country skiing, tubing, playing Snow Football and Blizzard Rush. They also got to see how loud and crazy we could be with games and events to help us gain points for our team, the Lumberjacks! We narrowly missed winning the Blizzard Cup but it wasn t for lack of trying. We also had a great bus driver, Ron Tiessen, who got us to Muskoka and back again through lots of snow and ice. Our group would like to thank our church family for your support both in prayers and financially. It was an amazing event and time to get to know ourselves, each other and Jesus better. Another huge shout out to the leaders who are always up for an adventure, which included little sleep, lots of cookies and coffee, and being just as loud and crazy as the youth! Thanks to all who participated. It s always wonderful to hear other Youth Leaders and Event Staff look at your youth & leaders and say, Wow! What an amazing group! Look how involved and into it they are! Way to Go Team!!!!

5 Age Unlimited Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart working for the Lord. Colossians 3:24 Viola Glos will be our special guest, presenter at our Age Unlimited Fellowship at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 14th, An invitation is extended to all Seniors of our Banwell congregation. Henry Nurse is the group coordinator and opens our meeting. Viola Glos will give an audio visual presentation of her experience as a C.B.O.Q. Baptist volunteer at the Refugee Camp in Kenya, Africa. She will also update information on the Camp s present condition. Viola also has a wonderful life story to share. Viola grew up in Verdun, Quebec where she attended an Associated Gospel Church. While attending high school, she was president of the Montreal Inter School Christian Fellowship and Nurses Christian Fellowship at the Montreal General Hospital. Viola married Carl Glos, a Civil Engineer. His brother, Jerry, was an architect and they designed and were contracted to build St. John Harbour in Newfoundland. They attended First Baptist Church and enjoyed this ministry experience. On return to Windsor, the family attended Temple Baptist Church where Viola was President of the Miriam Ladies Group and Moderator of the Church Council. Viola was active in Western Association and served for three years on the B.C.O. Q. Council in Toronto. She has also enjoyed a very rewarding nursing career. She was a Head Nurse at Hotel Dieu Hospital. Viola was also a founding member of the Hospice in Windsor. Viola is an avid reader and has participated in Bible Study Fellowship and other women s Bible studies. Viola has travelled extensively including: Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Thailand, Mexico and Antarctica. Viola has enjoyed a supportive family and her church family. 6 My Back Pages As I prepare to submit this article, it s hard to forget the spectacle of the recent Super Bowl. It was a great game (and the right team won!) but that s not so much of what I m thinking nor am I referring to the hype leading up to the game, the multi-million dollar commercials or the half time show. What caught my attention actually happened after the game was completely over. I don t always watch the post-game awards ceremony of the Super Bowl, but I was with some friends, so we lingered in the afterglow of an enjoyable evening. We sat there with some surprise when both the winning coach and the MVP of the game (most valuable player) made mention of their faith in Christ. In themselves, those two moments provided such encouragement for those of us who are proud to call ourselves disciples. But knowing a little more about these two men and their respective journeys to the big game might give us cause to ponder. The coach of the winning team was in his second year as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. As recently as 8 years ago he was a high school football coach, which does not usually provide a fast track to a professional job. The MVP was, until just a few weeks ago, the backup quarterback for his team. He only got the chance to play because the starter had been injured. He even admitted that he had been tempted to give up football a short time ago. In spite of the struggles that these two men had endured in their professional lives, here they were standing on the awards stage of perhaps the biggest showcase in professional sports. No one could have predicted that two such unlikely career paths would have combined for such a victory. In spite of the thrill of the moment, both of them wasted no time in thanking God for the opportunity to live and play in the game. It was almost as if their struggles in life had taught them an important lesson once you learn that there is a Presence with you no matter what the circumstances, then life is different from that point on. Of course, they were thrilled to be standing on the winners podium but my guess is that if they d been in the losers locker room, their witness would have been the same. At some point in the past, in giving their hearts and lives to Christ, they had gained the most important gift they would ever have. And everything else, even a football championship, pales in comparison. In all this I m reminded of a quote from philosopher Frederick Nietzsche He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how. And isn t that what all of us are after? Self help authors try their best to give advice as to how to live life successfully. But the truth is that challenges come to all of us like the coach who toiled in obscurity at a local high school or the quarterback who seemed to be languishing on the bench. It seems that sometimes we are going nowhere what a wonderful blessing to learn that the Father is not absent from these situations. In essence, what these guys were testifying to last Sunday evening was summarized so beautifully by the apostle Paul many centuries before; For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
