3 January 3, 2016 From the Pastor s Desk, This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Epiphany. It is celebrated differently in other countries. Due to the mixing of many cultures here in the United States it is simply another Sunday Liturgy following Christmas, with no real fanfare. In some of the Western European countries it is on this day that gifts are exchanged in memory of the gifts that the three Magi brought to the Christ Child. Epiphany commemorates the revelation of Jesus to the world. The three Magi, after searching for years, are able to find the Christ child. Since Christmas, our manger scene in Church has shown over the past days that the Magi were not present at Bethlehem, but through the help of the star were guided to Nazareth. Here they presented their precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The Magi represent the people of the world other than the Jewish people. Christ was to be the savior of ALL peoples, not just the chosen Jewish people. Traditional nativity scenes portray the skin color of the Magi as white, black and red. The Christmas Season in the Catholic Church concludes with the Baptism of the Lord and the beginning of His public life next weekend. As we begin this New Year, may each of us make every effort to live the Christmas message of love, peace and joy every day of the year. Let these be our New Years resolution. Who cares if we lose a few pounds or give up some of our bad habits? But if we truly lived the Christmas message, we could affect not only our lives, but the lives of many of those around us. Our Christmas here at Saint Agnes Cathedral has truly been blessed and joyous. Beginning with Thanksgiving, our Christmas baskets and Jessie Tree gifts, open house at the rectory, our beautiful liturgies. We have celebrated Christmas through liturgies, gifts, food and fellowship. This is what it means to be Christ to one another. As we begin the New Year 2016, may we carry the love and joys of Christmas wherever we go and to whomever we meet, not just during the Christmas season, but throughout the New Year. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is looking for volunteers to help build THE MARSHALL HOME, beginning January 11- April 9 th. All skill level volunteers age 16 and older are welcome to come as individuals or groups Wednesday- Saturday, 9am-4pm. Contact Habitat at or register online: construction.habitatspringfieldmo.volunteerhub.com. It would be great if some members of St. Agnes could form a group to help this family get a new home. The family itself has to provide sweat equity and will pay a mortgage. Sr. Elizabeth Ann WOMEN OF THE PARISH Mark your calendars for the morning of January 16th. St. Martha s Group is sponsoring their annual Morning of Recollection. We will meet at 8:30 in the Chapel for Mass, then take a short break and resume in the Chapel for a presentation. We helped 25 families this year. That is less than last year, but I understand Crosslines also had fewer requests for baskets this year. I also thank all those who bought a gift for our own parishioners and visited with them. It means a lot to people. Sr. Elizabeth Ann HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS Once a month a group from St. Agnes prepares and serves lunch for the women and children living at Harmony House. This shelter for victims of domestic abuse is just ½ block from St. Agnes on Cherry. If you would like to help with this effort please contact M. E. Beach at (417) The next lunch will be Jan. 9. A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromises the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. Pope Francis, Laudato Si, no Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. ST. AGNES MILITARY ASSISTANCE GROUP Our young people in the military naturally expect to hear from their families and communication from them can raise morale skyhigh. There is another huge morale boost available here at St. Agnes. Our Military Assistance Group has sent dozens of packages to the military overseas since the beginning of the Iraq- Afghanistan deployments. We want to let them know that our appreciation of what they are doing spreads into the communities they have left behind. We don t ask for money from anyone. This isn t charity. We ve been there, and we want to help. All we need is the name and address of your friend or family member who is far from home and making our way of life safer by what they are doing. PLEASE HELP US ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION! Send the name and address of your family member or friend in the military anywhere overseas to the St. Agnes Military Assistance Group in care of the Parish Offices. We will take care of the rest.
