3 From the Pastor s Desk, The last couple of years I have been much more involved in the lives of several of our seminarians, especially Josh Carroll, Andrew Williams, Deacon Joseph Stoverink (now Fr. Joseph our Associate Pastor). For the past 8 months I have been the spiritual director of a young man from my home town of Bolivar. Who, as he turns 20, is taking a hard look at diocesan priesthood. This has been a very positive experience for me, as I reflect back on my own formation in the seminary and the pastors who mentored me in my early years after ordination. In our troubled world we as a society, a nation, a world, are more in need of priests than perhaps at any other time. The role of priest is not about power. It is about leading the people in the worship of our loving God who sent His Son to suffer, die, rise from the dead and to point the way to the Father. The words of St. Paul should be before a priest always: We do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. As I prepare my homilies for Sunday, I try to keep that quote before me. We were taught at St. Meinrad that the homily is not about you gentlemen, but about God and how to help the people live the Word of God in their daily lives. I do want to thank those of you who have commented on how the homily really spoke to me. I know that my style does not speak to everyone, but that is the differences in people. Through all those years of teaching, I think it is important in looking at the scriptures for Mass to explain the background. Otherwise we do not understand why we use those readings from the Old Testament, or why did Jesus say that. We are living years later and sometimes the reading simply does not make sense without the context. I try to give a little history to the readings and then apply them to our lives, all of this done within a minute time frame. This was something else we were taught, Gentlemen if you can t say it in 10 minutes, sit down and be quiet because you have lost the people. Every now and then I still take out my notes from our homiletics class and review to see if I am following what I was taught. Please keep all our Seminarians in prayer as they have returned to their seminaries. 5 WE ARE CALLED I love St. Ignatius s First Principle and Foundation, as explained by Father Michael Gaitley in his Consoling the Heart of Jesus study program. Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul. The other things on the face of the earth are created for man to help him in attaining the end for which he is created. Father Gaitley explains that when we keep our eyes on the first thing, all else falls in place. However, if we go after the second things first, we lose not only the second thing but also the first. Sounds just like Jesus words: Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be given you as well. (Mt. 6:33) Pure genius! ~Ginny Smithberg SENIOR UNLIMITED AFTERNOON GAMES On Sept. 11th we will gather from 1:00-2:00Ish pm to play some games. You can decide if you want to play a game that requires some skill or merely rely on luck. I am suggesting those of you with difficulty walking should park on Jefferson Street. Someone will let you in the door on Jefferson. For the first time, at least, we will play at the south end of the cafeteria, close to the small bathroom near the office. You don t have to call for this event; just come if you can. We will decide then how often you would like to come together. I am hoping once a week, or at least every two weeks. Sr. Elizabeth Ann PCCW AND ST MARTHA S GROUP We will begin meeting again on Wed., Sept. 6, at 9:15am; right after the 8:30 Mass. Because St. Martha s Group was formed to be a small group under the umbrella of PCCW (Parish Council of Catholic Women, to which all women of the parish belong) we are inviting all women of the parish to join us at this meeting if you would like input into the PCCW budget. PCCW does much for the parish so we hope to see you at this meeting.
