3 May 28, 2017 From the Pastor s Desk, On Wednesday of this past week I quietly celebrated my 36th anniversary to the Priesthood. I have often thought how blessed I am with my priesthood. In reflecting back over these thirty six years there have been many joys and sorrow, but I truly believe that I have used all the gifts and talents that God gave me to help the Church and God s work in our vineyard. I know that I do not meet the needs of all peoples, and for that I am sorry. But priesthood is much like being a parent; sometimes we cannot be the best friend to people, sometimes we have to say no. My happiest sacrament to celebrate outside the celebration of the Mass, is that of Baptism. For myself the hardest to celebrate is that of a mass with a funeral. I know that funerals are to be celebrations, but funerals are many times hard to lead people in prayer, especially if the deceased is a young person. The celebration of the Eucharist is the center of a priest s prayer life. That is the purpose of the priest. We are ordained as a presbyter, one who presides at altar. When it comes to the celebration of the mass, I strive to put my whole self into the celebration. On the weekends that I celebrate 4 masses I find it hard to meet the spiritual needs of the be people in an uplifting, prayerful way. It is a physical, as well as spiritual, drain to celebrate multiple liturgies. That is why there is a Canon Law which limits the number of masses we are to celebrate on one day. However, with the bishop s permission, priests are permitted to celebrate multiple masses as I celebrated 5 Sunday liturgies while Fr. Gregory was on retreat last weekend. My priesthood has truly been a mix of many ministries. The greatest single thread has been that of teaching in the high school. Teaching freshmen, sophomore and especially senior, theology at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau. Most of the students there would not be going on to higher Catholic education so I took my teaching in the classroom very seriously. There was not a question that I did not answer. Even when many times it meant that I had to search or call the Catholic Center for an answer. It was that love of working with high school students that helped me make the decision to accept the role of director of the theater at Springfield Catholic High School eight years ago, and 4 years ago to being the chaplain at the high school. Music, drama and the arts have always been important to me and I have used them to help express my love for God and others. To celebrate liturgies prayerfully, I believe all three need to be present. Without expression, without music, without flowers and candles, the liturgies become only a rite. We are to celebrate God to our fullest, with all that He has given us. In my thirty-six years I have tried very hard to do that. As I write this, my thoughts and prayers this week are for Deacon Joseph Stoverink as he is ordained to the Priesthood this Friday evening, May 26 in Cape Girardeau. FROM THE CHANCELLOR to Springfield Parishes & surrounding area: Just as a reminder to our people that while two churches may contain Catholic in their names, they are NOT in fact in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church: 1) Queen of All Saints Catholic Church (Society of St Pius X) 2) Christ Catholic Church 1505 W. Atlantic 405 Kentling Ave Springfield, MO Highlandville, MO For those interested in participating in the liturgy in its Extraordinary Form, the traditional Latin Mass is offered each Parish Picnic and Farewell Dinner for Fr. Gregory St. Agnes will hold its parish picnic Sunday, June 4, 2017, after the 5:00pm Mass. The main entrée of hot dogs, fried chicken, and drinks will be provided by the Parish and Vietnamese Community. Please bring a side dish and/or dessert to share (please also bring a disposable serving spoon with your dish). Come and share a meal with your parish family and give well-wishes to Fr. Gregory before he leaves to his new assignment in Houston, Texas. This is a family friendly event. See you there! We need volunteers for set up and clean up and this will count for SCHS service hours. Please call Mike Pittman at to volunteer.

5 May 28, 2017 WE ARE CALLED Is it possible for us, God s children, to console Jesus now as though we were with Him as He suffered and died for us? We humans are limited by time and space, but God is not. He sees everything-----past, present, and future all at once. For God everything is always present; He lives in the Eternal Now. Or, as our Catechism explains, To God, all moments of time are present in their immediacy. (600) Of course, we can stand beneath the cross with Mary and John or pray with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane to console the God/Man who saved all of us. Father Michael Gaitley explains this beautifully in his retreat videos. We hope you ll join us on June 12 th for our summer retreat, Consoling the Heart of Jesus. One group will meet on Mondays from 9:15 to 10:45. The other groups will meet on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30pm in the Upper Room. Please call to register. - Ginny Smithberg GARAGE SALE - MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The annual St. Agnes Garage Sale will be held early this year. The dates of the sale are June 16th & 17th. In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that come from being people who place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit's power will come upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know that their mission is to spread the hope of the gospel to all the nations. This wonderful feast keeps our eyes focused on the hope in which we were grounded on the day of our baptism. Copyright J.S. Paluch Col, Inc.
