1 December 11, 2016 Saint Agnes Cathedral 533 S. Jefferson Avenue, Springfield, MO Today is Gaudete Sunday, which means "rejoice." For three weeks now we have been preparing for Christmas and, one hopes, enjoying some peace to pray and anticipate the coming of the Lord, not just as a baby two thousand years ago, but also in the end-times, the parousia, when the Lord will come again in glory. This is the Sunday when the rejoicing begins. Advent, unlike Lent, is not a penitential time, but a time of waiting and anticipation for the fulfillment of God's promises. "[We] will see the glory of the LORD, / the splendor of our God" (Isaiah 35:2). So, "Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord... Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand" (James 5:7, 8). Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

3 From the Pastor s Desk, December 11, 2016 Our lives today are not inconvenienced by darkness or the winter cold as in the early days of the Christianity. We, with our modern technology, find winter a mere inconvenience. The darknesses are no less real in our day and time, and are perhaps even more terrible than that of our ancestors in faith. For all of us there is a communal darkness of a time of war and terrorism. Our culture s expectation of Christmas contrasts with the experience of longing for the coming of Christ. Our consumer driven society and selfishness leads to many forms of injustice. For many the Advent days are frantic and hurried as they keep step with our culture s Christmas demands. For most of us, Christmas touches some memory of childhood wonder and reminds us of those special times that will never be recaptured. Into all of these emotions comes the Advent proclamation of the Lord s coming as the Son of Man. I continue with more of our traditions surrounding Christmas, traditions with meanings long forgotten. In our politically correct society that we find ourselves in here in the United States, Merry Christmas has become happy holidays. English-speakers have been wishing one another a merry Christmas for nearly 400 years. Here is how you would say Merry Christmas in Czech - Vesele Vianoce, Chinese - Kung His Hsin Nien Bing Chu Shen Tan, French - Joyeux Noel, German - Froehliche Weihnachten, Italian - Buon Natale, Polish - Boze Narodzenie, Spanish - Feliz Navidad, Vietnamese - Mung Giang Sinh and Pilipino - Maligayang Pasko. Bah! Humbug!, is one of the most well-known literary exclamations. It was uttered by Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character in Charles Dickens s classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol. When Scrooge s cheerful nephew wishes him A Merry Christmas, uncle! God save you! the old man replies, Bah! Humbug! This is Scrooge s way of saying phooey Christmas is a fraud. Scrooge however changes his tune after a series of disturbing visions showing Christmases past, present and future. In the Catholic Church, white and gold signify purity and light and are the true liturgical colors of Christmas. Red stands for honor and charity. Green comes from an Old English word grene, meaning to grow. Green has always been associated with hope, youth and new growth. Here in the United States we have mixed all the colors together: white, gold, red and green as our Christmas colors. With all the traditions that I have shown over the last 3 years, the United States truly is a melting pot of people and customs. I believe it is important to remember and understand the history behind what we do and where it came from. Please take one of the ornaments off the tree and take them a small gift such as homemade cookies, a box of candy, a warm throw, a Christmas decoration, a plant, etc. (Think of something your older parents or grandparents might like to receive.) Remember, your visit to another parishioner may be more important than the gift. You may take this gift any time during Advent. Call me if you have questions: , ext Sr. Elizabeth Ann

5 December 11, 2016 WE ARE CALLED We re really going to miss Andrew Williams. He s our seminarian from the East side of the diocese, who has been working with Father Lewis experiencing the life of a parish priest. We ve seen him working with the RCIA candidates, the school children, attending parish functions, and even sharing with us his journey toward his decision to become a priest. What a gift you have given to us, Andrew! He has helped us, as Father Lewis does, nearly every Wednesday at the Emporium. The players love him, we volunteers love him, and we will all miss him. He will be returning to his studies with our prayers, our gratitude, and our hope that he may return someday to St. Agnes. When you do come, Andrew, bring Deacon Joseph with you. God bless you always. -Ginny Smithberg CHRISTMAS MEMORIALS If you would like to remember someone in a special way by providing a donation for Christmas flowers and decorations in the cathedral, please enclose your offering in an envelope marked FLOWERS with your name and the person you wish to remember. A list will be printed in a later bulletin. A child is loved because he is one s child: not because he is beautiful, or because he is like this or like that Not because he thinks as I do, or embodies my dreams. A child is a child: a life generated by us but intended for Him, for His good, for the good of the family, of society, of mankind as a whole. --Pope Francis, General Audience, Feb. 11, PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK Karen Gray, Agnes Wagstaff, Mary Fruge, Kyhl McDevitt, Rose Harris, David Glenn, John Van Slyke, Catherine Ingraham, Terry Wilkinson, Troy Cronkhite, Don Rippee., Thomas McGuiness, Bill Nichols, Jim Lavern, Teresa Smith, Mary Gott SENIORS UNLIMITED On December 13th we will gather at the café in the Mansion at Elfindale at 10:30 for brunch.
