3 3 From the Pastor s Desk, This Wednesday we will celebrate Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season. We will be marked with ashes and the words of the blessing, Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Turning away from sin and seeking repentance is the theme of the Lenten Season. Turning away from sin many times means a change of mind, a change of heart and a change of behavior. This is true conversion and conversion cannot be limited to a dramatic, once-in-a-lifetime, so called born again experience. Lent gives us 40 days of working on that conversion, so we can walk faithful in the footsteps of Christ through His Passion, Death and the celebration of His Resurrection. One of the important aspects of conversion is the acknowledgement of one s sins and seeking absolution of those sins from God and the community in which we live. Sin is, before all else, an offense against God and at the same time it damages our relationship with others and the community. For this reason, we need to confess our sinfulness, seeking absolution from God and reconciliation with the Church (people of God). Within the tradition of the Catholic Church for the past 2000 years, this reconciliation has been expressed and accomplished liturgically by the Sacrament of Penance. Christ instituted the Sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of His Church. The Sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to conversion and to recover the grace which began in our lives at Baptism. Many changes in the sacrament have occurred over the centuries, but there are two equally essential elements that have always been present: contrition, confession and satisfaction on the part of the penitent; and God s action through the intervention of the Church. The confession of sins, even from a simply human point of view, frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others. Through such an admission, the individual looks at the sins one is guilty of and takes responsibility for them, and thereby opens themselves again to God and to the communion of the Church. Confession of sins of even a lesser nature helps us to form our conscience and fight against evil tendencies and lets ourselves be healed by Christ. Our Lenten Penance Service here at St. Agnes Cathedral is on March 10 th. However beginning this Friday March 20, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 5-5:30 and again from 6:30-7:00. Come and experience reconciliation with God and through the Church receive God s grace, peace and serenity of conscience. I want to encourage anyone looking for a Lenten spiritual growth opportunity to participate in the PRIEST, PROPHET & KING Program. This is a short weekly video each week by Fr. Robert Barron providing an introduction to the Jesus Christ as Priest, Prophet and King. Christ is boldly Himself, for He is fully God, but He is God who makes Himself known to us through being fully human. Through His experiences we can come to an understanding of who He is and what He wants. Fr. Lewis Hejna I am looking for a part-time secretary who is competent in computers. If Interested Please contact me at PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK Beverly Tarnowieckyi, Linda Dunigan, Nancy Bechard, Wayne Bechard, Shelly Harper, Hortensia Salas, Stacey Brown, Rex Mueting, Raymond Nobles PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION EVENTS Faith Fair: This weekend through the morning of February 22, we are having our Faith Fair. The items created by the PSR students are in the front of the cathedral on the tables. Come and see what they ve been talking about in their classes. The 8:30 am Mass on February 15 will celebrate our Parish School of Religion program. Lenten Project: Our Lenten Project begins on February 22. We will be collecting small change in each classroom for Catholic Charities. This will also be a competition to see which classes bring in the most change. Last year, we sent Catholic Charities around $300. We hope to raise a good bit more this year. So, parents and students, save your change and bring it to class each week that we meet through Lent. SENIORS UNLIMITED After 12:15 Mass on Ash Wednesday, Seniors are invited to gather for a soup and salad luncheon in the dining room. Please call in so I can let AS YOU LIKE IT know how many to prepare for. Donations accepted. S. Elizabeth Ann WE ARE CALLED Last Saturday at the 5pm Mass, 25 young people, including my wonderful grandson, Peter, were confirmed. It was a sacred, touching, and glorious ceremony. Bishop Johnston imparted, by the laying on of hands, the gift of the Spirit that completes the grace of Baptism, just as John and Peter did when they were sent to Samaria to confirm the newly baptized believers. Our Catechism explains, by the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. John and Peter, of course, were some of our first bishops and we are certainly blessed to have Bishop Johnston as one of their direct successors. He met with the candidates and us lucky sponsors for over an hour prior to the Mass. His talk was relevant, inspirational, funny at times, and certain to be remembered by all of us. Many years ago, the Baltimore Catechism taught some of us that Confirmation is a Sacrament that made us strong and perfect Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ. Now the confirmed are referred to as witnesses of Christ who are strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by work and deed. We were called soldiers then, and witnesses now. Regardless of the terminology, I think it s safe to say that we are all called. Ginny Smithberg

5 5 At the last judgment, the Lord will invite the just to inherit the heavenly kingdom because of the good deeds they did on earth. Come. You have my Father s blessing! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me. I was ill and you comforted me, in prison and you came to visit me. (Mt 25, 34-36). Saint Paul teaches us that God will reward every person according to his works and that each one will reap only what he sows. In his letter to the Corinthians Saint Paul writes: Each will receive his wages in proportion to his toil (1 Cor. 3.8). Be steadfast and persevering, my beloved brothers, fully engaged in the work of the Lord. You know that your toil is not in vain when it is done in the Lord (1 Cor ). Whatever you do, work at it with all your being. Do it for the Lord rather than for men, since you know full well you will receive an inheritance from Him as your reward (Col. 3.23f). In all these texts Saint Paul speaks of God rewarding us according to our good works. Remember Saint Paul s theology we are justified by faith and saved by grace, not by works. It is only works that proceed from faith and love that bring an eternal reward. But in order to merit, certain conditions must be verified with regard to the one meriting and with regard to the act. With regard to the one meriting, the person must be in the pilgrim state and must have the life of grace (2 Cor. 5.10; Lk ; Heb. 9.27). With regard to the act, it must be morally good and must proceed from free choice. In Christ, Fr. He told us that they had put their house up for sale and planned to move to Colorado. We re so happy for him and Mary because they love it there, but I guess we thought he d be here a little longer. He s been our steady-eddy cashier at Bingo on the 4 th and 5 th weeks for years. All of us loved being around him; he was so funny and he always brought us candy. Regardless of how you felt, when Bob came to volunteer you felt better, happier, energized. Our players enjoyed him as much as we did. I think that his ability to do this came from his inner goodness and love of others. He is a godly man and we will miss him so much. Happy snow days, nice man, we will remember you in our thoughts and in our prayers. Did you know? St. Agnes receives a yearly bill for their parishioners to receive The Mirror.
