2 Dear Parishioners, Over the next few weeks, 140 of our parish children will receive Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion. This is a great event in their lives. They will partake of the heavenly food to strengthen them on their journey to the kingdom of heaven. As they grow physically, they are also to grow spiritually. This is also a time for us to share in their joy and to remind ourselves of this great gift that Jesus left the church. There are two dangers in our spiritual life - forgetfulness and routine. When things become routine we tend to lose the importance and value. We who have received Communion week after week and year after year, can lose the awareness of what such a special gift we have receiving the body and blood of Jesus into our bodies. Who can fully comprehend it? We also may forget that the Lord did not suggest, but commanded us to eat His body and drink His blood. He came as the living bread down from heaven to nourish us with His very life. Let the occasion of First Communion be a renewal of our commitment to be faithful in being fed at the Eucharistic table. We are called to feed upon the Lord once a week as we gather as a community to worship. You may also consider coming to be fed more often going to daily Mass. We have two daily Masses Monday through Friday at 6:45 a.m. and at 9:00 a.m. Come and join our approximately 180 daily communicants. It is a great way to begin each day by hearing the Scriptures and receiving Communion. May is the month of Mary. She is the mother of Jesus, thus the mother of the Eucharist. Mary brought Jesus to us when she gave birth to Him. Today she continues to bring us to Jesus by calling us to go to Mass to receive her son. This quote comes from Fr. Stefano Manelli; We know that united to the divinity in the Eucharist there is Jesus Body and Blood taken from the body and blood of Mary. The flesh of Jesus is the maternal flesh of Mary, the blood of Jesus is the maternal blood of Mary. Therefore it will never be possible to separate Jesus from Mary. Padre Pio would sometimes say to his spiritual children, Do you not see the Madonna always beside the tabernacle? The reply St. Bernadette gave was very beautiful when someone put this tricky question to her: What would please you more, to receive Holy Communion or to see the Madonna in the grotto? She answered, What a strange question! The two cannot be separated. Jesus and Mary always go together. CALEB S CORNER The most affectionate creature in the world is a wet dog. May Mary help us to grow in loving the Mass and the Eucharist. The monthly Healing Mass will be this Wednesday, May 6, starting with the rosary at 7:00 p.m. I will be available to hear confessions on Wednesday, May 6, from 2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you, 2

3 Reflection of the Week Sorrow looks back. Worry looks around. Faith looks up. Scriptural Teaching An Inquisitive Walk through the Scripture, 74 HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Tuesday 7:30 p.m. HEALING MASS Wednesday 7:00 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Thursday 2:00 p.m. We continue to look to the Hebrew Scriptures to understand how Jesus is the fulfillment of the promised Messiah. If we are to reasonably and faithfully embrace Him as Messiah, He has to incarnate in His life the credentials of the Messiah as understood by the rabbis as they studied God s revelation. The Law (Torah) is the revelation of God for the salvation of the human race. When asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus replied: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. (cf. Deut. 6:4-9) This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Lev. 19:18) On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. (Mt. 22:37-40) Other rabbis (e.g. Hillel) were coming to the same conclusion but Jesus brings these two commandments to a height and depth that no one else can. Jesus said Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill them. (Mt. 5:17) How could anyone love God with all of one s heart, soul and mind (and strength) when every human is diminished, distracted and disintegrated due to sin? To be able to love God with integrity, we humans needed to have our sins forgiven and we needed to be restored to an intimacy with God which the first Adam and Eve had. Jesus is the New Adam who forgave our sins when He died on the cross and by His resurrection; He as Son of God - breathed upon us and into us the Breath/Spirit of God as God originally did with the first Adam. (Gen. 2:7) This forgiveness of sins and the imparting of the Holy Spirit are celebrated in Baptism and provide an intimacy with God as His adopted children. We are not simply creatures created in the image and likeness of God but we are sharers in His divine nature by God s free gift. We are by grace what the Son of God is by nature. We, in the Only-Begotten Son of God, can now share in the love of God for God When asked about love of neighbor, Jesus really turned the tables on a lawyer when He told the parable of the Good Samaritan. (cf. Luke 10:25-37) The question becomes not Who is my neighbor but the command becomes Be a good neighbor to all by showing mercy. Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful. (Lk. 6:36) Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Mt. 5:48) But loving others as we love ourselves will not necessarily be merciful for so many humans suffer self-loathing, selfishness or self-centeredness. Rather, Jesus gave the new commandment to His disciples: Love one another as I have loved you. (Jn. 13:34) This elevates our ability to love to a divine level since Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus even says to us: As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. (Jn. 15:9) We are now empowered to love as God loves. Here is true perfection and fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. No one but the Son of God could accomplish this for us. 3

When Jesus restores Bartimaeus's sight, no elaborate action is required. (In other healing stories in Mark's Gospel, actions accompany Jesus' words). In this instance, Jesus simply says that Bartimaeus's faith has saved him. Throughout Mark's Gospel, the success of Jesus' healing power has often been correlated with the faith of the person requesting Jesus' help. For example, it is because of her faith that the woman with the hemorrhage is healed. When faith is absent, Jesus is unable to heal; we see this after his rejection in Nazareth. Is my faith present? AFFIRMING LIFE COMMITTEE Mother s Day Rose-for-Life Drive A Rose-for-Life drive will take place on Mother s Day weekend, May 9 and 10 after all the Masses. The funds raised will help Massachusetts Citizens for Life continue their efforts to protect the Right to Life of the unborn, the disabled, and the elderly. The suggested donation for a silk rose is $2. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you again to all those who donated to our book drive earlier this year. In addition to the 300 books we were able to deliver to the homeless, we were also able to make a delivery of over 90 bags of essentials to homeless families living in motels in Saugus.
