October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Newsletter Sunday Services ~ 10:00 A.M. October 4 Blessing of the Animals Rev. Arthur Vaeni Hear the story of Henry Bergh, SPCA founder, and participate in a ritual blessing of the animals, the pets, that bless our lives each day. This service was chosen by the high bidders for the opportunity to choose a special topic/service at last spring s church auction. On this Sunday, you are invited to bring your pets to church that we may be blessed by their presence even as we offer them our blessing. Please, plan to keep your pet on a leash, in a cage or otherwise under your control while they are in the church. October 11 Forgiveness Is Not an Occasional Act: It Is a Permanent Attitude Rev. Arthur Vaeni The title of this service is from a quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. Many of us have difficulty understanding the nature of forgiveness and incorporating it into our lives. In this service, we will consider the place of forgiveness in our lives as individuals and as a religious community. October 18 Job s Understanding of Life Rev. Arthur Vaeni Job is one of the great stories in the Jewish and Christian Traditions. It is also one of the most important reflections on life and the nature of the Divine in those scriptures. What of it may be relevant to us? October 25 Beyond Categorical Thinking Jory Agate Selecting our next minister is an important responsibility. Attending the Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of the process and provide guidance to the Search Committee. The Beyond Categorical Thinking program is designed to promote inclusive thinking and help prevent unfair discrimination in the search process for a new minister. This program includes a Sunday morning service with a BCT workshop facilitator followed by a three-hour workshop. (See page 3 of this newsletter for more details.) The UUSB Search Committee invites all congregational leaders, members, and friends to participate in this workshop. We ll share our first Souper Sunday lunch between the worship service and the workshop. Choir rehearsals occur every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. All who enjoy singing, regardless of proficiency, are welcome to join them in the Sanctuary. Any questions, please contact our Music Director, Nancy Lewis. On Wed., Oct. 7 th, 6:30 PM in the Vestry, join our own Greg Westrich for his talk and slideshow about Hiking in Maine. Greg left his regular job to do what he loves, to hike and share it with others through his writing. Greg believes in the importance to the human spirit of free and unstructured time in nature. He and his wife, Ann Hartman, have raised their children, Henry and Emma, with that philosophy. We ll have some light refreshments, too! Like the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor on Facebook. It s one more way to stay connected.

October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Page 2 Along the Ministerial Way With the words of welcome I offer at the beginning of our Sunday services, I conclude by affirming that It is good to be together. In truth, it is not just good to be together it is essential. Some years ago, Robert Bellah, an eminent sociologist and author of Habits of the Heart delivered an address at our Association s General Assembly entitled Unitarian Universalism in Societal Perspective. In this address he told us: In the dissenting tradition the individual is primary and community, however valued, is secondary. This gets into American culture in the widespread sentimental value attributed to community by virtually all sectors of the American public But this voluntaristic notion of community, however treasured, is unable to bear the weight it is expected to carry. This understanding of community is perilous because individuals devote themselves to it only so long as it "meets their needs," and when it doesn't, there is no claim of perseverance or loyalty that community so understood, can exert. I am convinced that only a social understanding of human nature is ontologically true and that only a social ontology could divert American culture from the destructive course upon which it seems to be set. The dissenting tradition he spoke of is the dissenting religious tradition of which Unitarian Universalism is an integral part. To put it very briefly, the dissenting religious traditions derive from the gathering of individuals rather than from an understanding that individuals evolve from their participation in communities or society at large. So, in the dissenting traditions the individual is primary and the community or society is always secondary. We know well the advantages of this conception of religious life in which the individual conscience is so highly honored. As Professor Bellah acknowledged: Beneath the surface glitter of American culture there is a deep inner core, which, I have argued, is ultimately religious: the sacredness of the conscience of every single individual. Nothing I have said tonight takes away from the enormous power for good of that idea. It is responsible for the best in our culture. He continued, however, by revealing the dark side of that individualistic conception, particularly when it informs the basis for our society s economic life in which there is minimal sense of shared responsibility for one another s welfare. So, even as I affirm the importance of valuing individual conscience as a vital conception in our society and in our religious tradition, I simultaneously take to heart the essentially relational nature of our being. Later in his address, Professor Bellah said: It was Emile Durkheim who insisted that society is a reality sui generis and that we only become individuals in and through society. It was our own American social psychologist George Herbert Mead who worked this out concretely in the experience of the growing child. We become a self through, as Mead puts it, internalizing the role of the other. With such an understanding, it seems evident that neither you nor I become a self in isolation. We become who we are as members of society and through our participation in communities. Though your participation in this church is voluntary, when one begins to understand the fundamental social nature of our existence, then you ll recognize that your participation may also be essential -essential not only to your individual welfare, but to the welfare of society. In the spirit of love and peace, Arthur

October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Page 3 Ministerial Search Committee By the time you read this, all the cottage meetings will have all taken place and the surveys will be in. Your input is so appreciated! We have started working to compile the information received and putting this information into the packet that will be used to let prospective ministerial candidates know all about our congregation, our church, and the greater Bangor area. WE NEED YOUR PHOTOS! We are collecting photos of events that have happened at UUSB over the past couple of years. We need photos from RE events, Souper Sunday, the Auction, the Talent Shows, great photos of the outside of the building or the inside. Anything you can think of that you have hanging out in your cameras or on your computer. Thanks for taking the time to send them to Laurie Cartier at amalauriec@gmail.com or Mark McCollough at markmccolough25@gmail.com by October 15. On October 25, there will be an important workshop for the congregation called Beyond Categorical Thinking. See the information on this workshop in the article below. Put this on your calendars now and plan to attend!! As always, if you have input or questions about the Ministerial search you can talk to any of your ministerial search committee members: Joanie Ellis (Chair), Laurie Cartier, SueAnn Gaitings, Bob Kelly, Linda Koehler, Mark McCollough, and Anne Perkins. BEYOND CATEGORICAL THINKING Will the new minister hear me? Will my concerns and needs be met? Will the minister understand what I m living with? How will the community respond to our minister? In answering these questions, a picture of the ideal minister (categorized by age, gender, gender identity, nationality, physical ability, race, and sexual orientation) comes to mind. With this picture in place, it can be easy to unintentionally exclude ministers who fall into certain categories. At times, as we get caught up in comparing candidates to our picture, we can even forget what it is we hoped for in a minister. On the weekend of October 25, 2015, UUSB will participate in the Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop offered by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) for congregations involved in the search for a new minister. The UUSB Search Committee invites all congregational leaders, members, and friends to participate in this workshop. The Beyond Categorical Thinking program is designed to promote inclusive thinking and help prevent unfair discrimination in the search process for a new minister. This program includes a Sunday morning service with a BCT workshop facilitator followed by a three-hour workshop. In the workshop, UUSB members will: Consider the hopes, expectations, and concerns they have for a new minister Learn more about the ministerial search process, and Explore how thinking categorically about people sometimes interferes with choosing the best candidate. Come on Sunday, October 25 to participate in this UUA-sponsored workshop, led by Jory Agate. We ll share a light lunch in the Dorothy between the worship service and the workshop. Selecting our next minister is an important responsibility. Attending the Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of the process and provide guidance to the Search Committee.

October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Page 5 Religious Education Social Justice UUs working for Accountable Elections SAVE THE DATE! Sunday Oct. 4th, 8:30 a.m. in the RE space--- the FIRST R.E.A.L meeting! We want to introduce R.E.A.L to everyone. It stands for Religious Education Action League, and it's about being a mover and a shaker and questioner and supporter of our fabulous religious education program. We are inviting all members and friends of UUSB to attend, including parents, teachers, young adults and teens! Our program can't stay good or get better if it all falls on one person's shoulders! Please consider attending a REAL meeting. Instead of having a monthly RE committee, we now have REAL which will meet once every 2-3 months on a Sunday morning before the service. We will serve you breakfast, and your thoughts, ideas and energy will be VERY appreciated! We hope you will attend!! Come on Sunday, Oct. 4th, 8:30 a.m. for the first meeting. Next one: TBA. Please contact Karen Childs, RE director, or Connie McVey, REAL chair, conniemcvey@gmail.com, if you know in advance you will be attending or for more info. Childcare can be provided if we know it's needed in advance. Shawl Ministry Needs Your Help UUSB s Shawl Ministry has been creating and giving shawls for over 10 years. Shawls are knit or crocheted, then given to members and friends to wrap them in a symbolic hug and hold them in our hearts in times of joy, illness, grief, and celebration. We have given 374 shawls, an average of over 30 shawls per year. Each shawl takes from 10 to 30 hours, and about 500 yards of yarn, to create. Over the years we have had as many as 10 people creating shawls in a given year gifting us all with their time, talent, and yarn. At this point we have three active knitters, and they are limited in the amount of time they can devote to creating shawls. This is where you come in. Do you knit or crochet, or want to learn? Are you interested in contributing to our Shawl Ministry? You don t have to come to meetings, and we can supply you with patterns, yarn, and sometimes needles or hooks. Being part of Shawl Ministry is a wonderful way to support the UUSB community, with the blessings of the shawls reflecting back on the creator many fold! Please contact Cathy Elliott, cathyelliott25@gmail.com or , for more information. Thank you! Mainers for Accountable Elections held a pre-election workshop at UUSB, sponsored by the Social Justice Committee, on September 13, with talks by Ed Youngblood, former Republican legislator from Brewer; Ryan Tipping-Spitz, Democratic representative from Orono; and Joannah Tindongan of Mainers for Accountable Elections. The ballot question would increase matching funds for clean elections candidates and increase penalties for candidates who violate the law by spending large amounts of undisclosed money (often at the last minute). Youngblood said the proposed law will correct damage inflicted on Maine s pioneering clean elections law by the Supreme Court s 2010 Citizens United decision holding that money is speech and corporations are people. Youngblood said, Clean elections works, pointing out that funding for elections in Maine stayed flat while spending for elections elsewhere in the country skyrocketed. Under the proposed law, candidates would have to identify their top three donors. Money to pay for matching funds would not come from the state s general fund, Tipping-Spitz said, but from finding wasted money in tax breaks. We have to ask, is our democracy worth it? he said. Question 1 campaigning is largely driven by volunteers. This is an effort we have to win, Youngblood said. We re being watched by the whole country. The forum, followed by a light meal and phone banking, was organized by Nancy Jacobson and Suzanne Kelly. On Tuesdays, from 5-8:30 p.m., a group from UUSB is phone banking for the clean elections referendum. Come join us for camaraderie while we work to support our 5th principle. We'll be at the Mainers for Accountable Elections office, 9 Central St., Bangor, 2nd floor. Call Joannah Tindongan at , if you can, to let her know you'll be coming. For information about the referendum go to elections.org. We are also having a Mainers for Accountable Elections (MAE) UU phone banking and pizza party on Sunday, October 18 th, 5:30-8:30 P.M. at Bob and Suzanne s office (73 Pine Street). There are 7 spaces to call, but only 5 left since Nancy and Suzanne will be calling as well! Give Nancy ( ) or Suzanne ( ) a call to reserve your space. You won t want to miss it! A big thank you to all who participated at the Dance Pavillion Beer & Wine Tent at the Folk Festival! We UU's have FUNdraising down to a science. We had 24 volunteers and more waiting in the wings. Looking forward to next year already. The annual Harvest Supper celebrating the good work of many activists, sponsored by the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine and UUSB, will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 3, in the Dorothy Memorial, with a vegetarian potluck meal, music and bestowal of the Hands of Peace Award. For information, contact Suzanne Kelly at suziekrm@gmail.com.

October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Page 6 Window insert builders wanted! This year again UUSB will create lightweight, inexpensive but effective window inserts that save on heating bills, block uncomfortable drafts, and reduce carbon emissions definitely a win-win. Mark McCollough, Glen Koehler and Jessica Scheick have been working hard over the summer measuring the windows of people who have ordered inserts. The inserts will be assembled in the Dorothy between November 9-21, and we need volunteers for that. Two years ago the build was a community-building activity that involved a lot of laughter. Insert customers are expected to help assemble them, but we will need many more volunteers as well. A University of Maine class taught by Sharon Klein will be involved in the process, and there will be shifts during the day and in the evening. If you re able to participate, contact Glen at glen.koehler@maine.edu or This is a great opportunity to do something different, satisfying and fun. Responsible Investing Workshop A workshop on responsible, ethical investing for individuals will be held after church on October 18, led by Aram Khavari, UUSB financial adviser. Last May the congregation voted unanimously to avoid investing in fossil fuel stocks, and a number of people expressed interest in learning how to divest their own stocks. Special Presentations Coming in November The Green Sanctuary Committee is sponsoring two programs early in November. On November 1, Ryan Parker of the Natural Resources Council of Maine will give a presentation on the proposed National Park and National Recreation Area in the Katahdin region. This is an issue that has been much in the news and is of significance to our state, so come and get the facts. On November 5, Dr. Hal Borns, founder of the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine, will give a talk on the glacial history of Maine s eastern coastal zone: Maine s Ice Age Trail: Downeast, a presentation organized by Nancy Jacobson. More details on both events will be forthcoming in our weekly e-news. In December Green Sanctuary Catherine Foxson and Christina Diebold are stepping down as co-chairs of the Green Sanctuary Committee, so new leadership will be needed if the committee is to continue. Annual Cider Pressing And Bean-Hole Beans Extravaganza at Pumpkin Hill Farm It's that time of year again and, on Saturday, October 10th, we'll be pressing cider in our NEW, AMAZING PRESS and savoring bean-hole beans, fellowship, music, laughter and all that goes with it Bob and Suzanne Kelly at Pumpkin Hill Farm in Lowell. Here is the list of folks who purchased a place at the annual auction : Catherine Foxson, Ted Pierson, Lee Giles, Cathy Elliott, Norma Atherton, Bob and Nancy Daisey, Sue McKay and Patti Woolley, Sally Gove and Art Vaeni, Linda Koehler & Rissa Moore, Judy and Charlie Boothby, 2 for Gail Hasey, and 2 for Vyvyenne Ritchie. That make 19 guests, along with Bob and I and our son, David and his girlfriend, Catherine. That's a total of 23. There would be room for a few more at $25 if anyone is interested. Suzanne will get a map to people. Come anytime after 2:00 P.M. and bring some apples, non purchased if possible but not necessary (by orders of our apple specialist, David). We'll unveil the bean (both vegetarian and with meat) at somewhere between 5:00-6:00. Looking forward to it!!

October 2015 The Chalice and Chimes Page 7 Membership/Fellowship Committee Oct 17: Great Pumpkin Yard Sale! 8:00-2:00 This is another one of our fun draisers. We need donations, so it is a great time to take a home inventory. Perhaps you have two of something, or items that you haven t used in a while and just didn t have the heart to throw away, that you could donate. On Friday, October 16, bring those treasures to church and we will tag and display them. We prefer to have you drop off items between 1:15 and 5:30. If that time frame doesn t work for you, you can drop off items in the narthex (the original entrance to the sanctuary on the street level) that week, when the church is open.
