Our service will include a visit from our ancestors, Gen. Samuel F. Hersey and Dorothy Smith Dean (aka "Dot"). Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo or memento of a deceased loved one they wish to remember, which can be placed on our altar of remembrance. (This service is a collaboration between Rev. Drew, Karen Childs, Nero Fyler, Susan Vernal, Chris Packard, and Emma Paterson-Dennis.) November 11 - The Wisdom of Sankofa Sankofa is a metaphoric symbol to the Akan people of Ghana which is generally depicted as a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back. The meaning of the word is usually translated as "going back to the past, and bring forward that which is useful." Using this metaphor and our monthly theme of "Memory", this Sunday's service will look at the power of memories and how they shape and inform our future. (Rev. Drew, Laurie Cartier, and the UUSB Choir) November 18 - New Member Sunday This Sunday, we will hold our annual Fall ingathering to welcome new members into our Beloved Community. Come as we gather to meet our new members and we reflect on the meaning of membership and memories of belonging. (Rev. Drew, John Arimond, and the UUSB Choir) November 25 - Service led by UUSB Worship Team.

2 November 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 2 Drew s Views The Akan people of Ghana have a symbol -- the Sankofa -- the image of a bird with its feet facing forward and its neck twisted looking backward while simultaneously holding an egg in its mouth. It is a powerful symbol. Roughly translated, the word Sankofa means "looking to the past to move forward into the future." During November, as part of our theme-based ministry, we will be looking at the theme of "Memory." For most of us, the past comes to us in the form of memories. Memories are that faculty of the mind which stores and recalls vital information from our past to help us make decisions in the present, so we can move into the future. In our Unitarian Universalist tradition, we draw on many sources for wisdom, including direct experience. How do we remember our direct experiences? We do so by telling stories. This is how, as a species, we communicate our memories to one another. This is how we try to influence one another's thinking as we look to move together into the future. The formula is simple: What we remember informs what we will become. This month, many events help us remember. There is Samhain, Día de los Muertos, All Souls Day, Veterans Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, and Thanksgiving. Each of these events is meant to evoke a memory of a people, individuals, events, and values that hold a deep and abiding truth that we wish to carry with us into the future. These events are useful and meaningful ways of remembering people and stories that are valuable to us. It is also important to be mindful that while memories are often handy guides to our individual understandings, they can also be very individualized and can even be misleading, false and downright destructive. Memories can be essential teachers, and like other means of discovering truth, require scrutiny to be sufficiently useful. The Sankofa does not bring all experience into the future; it carries only the egg or the seed of truth, of growth and positive transformation. Too often in history, we bring with us memories that are unexamined or that are only interpreted by our emotions. The danger is that we are either sappy and dismissive of other people's perspectives, or we bring with us into the future the seeds of oppression and destruction. A great example of that is the revisionist history of the "traditional" American Thanksgiving. The values that this holiday espouses is a history of indigenous peoples and early European settlers sitting down and sharing a meal of gratitude as a symbol of cooperation and collaboration a reality that has been disproven. Accepting that notion denies the reality of the genocide that was committed and continues to be committed against the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, the name for North America used by many native tribes. When we remember the story, we should share the memory of this event through the experience of the Turtle Island peoples if it's to be a story that is worth bringing into the future. As we prepare for this month of memories, commemorative events and meaningful observances, let us be open to seeing them with questioning minds and open hearts. Let us be intentional about plucking from our memories those that are useful and kindly let go of those elements that distort or deny truth. This way we can own the truth of our experiences and move into the future without the seeds of destruction already being planted. Instead, let us be intentional to move into a future with the memories of love, compassion and interconnection. I wish you meaningful remembrances. May we carry our many examined remembrances into the future.

The Fall class will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Spring class will be spread over two evenings: Wednesday, April 3, and Wednesday, April 10, 2019, 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. There will be sign-up sheets, but you can also let LyAnn Grogan know if you might want to a end. Sunday, November 4, a er the morning worship service On September 23rd, we began our year-long process towards creating a congregational covenant. We will continue that process together on November 4th, after church, by addressing more questions about our shared congregational journey. The congregational covenant is the foundation of how UU congregations, both past and present, have organized themselves in a free yet committed relationship to each other in mutual respect. On Nov. 4, after the service, UUSB will engage in an all-society meeting called a "World Cafe." We will work around the room in small groups, addressing and debating the following questions about who we are and why we are here together: #1. Do I love, if I love only my own? #2. Why are you here (at UUSB)? Why are we here (at UUSB)? #3. Who do we want to be as individuals, as a community, or both? #4. What promises do we make to each other? What promises do we make to the world? #5. How do we become the people others can count on to stand on the side of love? Please plan to stay after the service this Sunday, to participate in the conversation. We are making arrangements for child care so all can attend. If possible, please alert Karen Childs in advance if your child will need child care. If you have any questions or comments, contact Robin Wood, Renee Montillo, or Laura Santilli.

4 November 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 4 Social Justice November is Ride the Bus Month. This year we have pledge cards for congregants, which can be made out and dropped into a special "Bus Box" on the Social Justice table in the Dorothy Hall. Transportation for All (TFA) is requesting that folks pledge to ride one percent more than they usually do during the month of November (and beyond, if possible). For non-riders, this could simply mean one ride in support of the bus. It could even be Election Day, when riding is FREE! TFA will have hot cocoa and information available at Pickering Square on ELECTION DAY, so stop by. Another ride the bus opportunity: ride with some of us to help at Solidarity Harvest on Friday, Nov. 16th; we'll meet at the Bus Depot on Pickering Square, 11:40 AM for the 12-3 PM shift. Sign up to bake mini pumpkin loaves on Nov. 7th at UUSB with the AUW Guild ladies, from 10 AM to 1 PM. We are also asking for donations of boxed pumpkin breads and mini loaf pans to add to the Thanksgiving meals on Nov at Solidarity Center in Brewer. UUs (esp. UUSB youth) participates every year by helping put together Thanksgiving meals for families who need them. WHY NOT RIDE THE BUS TO HELP WITH A GROUP OF UUSB BUS RIDERS WHO RIDE AND HELP EACH YEAR?!Check out the Social Justice table in the Dorothy Hall for more information. Get Out the Vote - Get informed: pick up a League of Women Voters information newspaper on the Social Justice table in the Dorothy Hall. Take someone to the polls on Election Day Take the Bus for Free on Election Day and GO VOTE. Peace and Jus ce Center s Annual Harvest Supper & 2018 Hands of Peace Awards! Saturday, November 10, 6 to 8pm, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Bangor, 120 Park St. Vegetarian potluck followed by Hands of Peace Awards; bring a dish to share! Suggested donation: $10, $15 for a family, $5 for students Call the Center ( ) for more information. Change: The UUSB Social Justice Committee has decided to take part in the UU Common Read program and Discussion Group, beginning in January. The book selection, however, has been changed to White Fragility (Why it's so hard for white people to talk about racism) by Robin DiAngelo. New York Times Bestseller: groundbreaking book exploring the counterproductive reactions people have when discussing racism that serve to protect their positions and maintain racial inequality. Rev. Drew will facilitate the group discussion, and we would like to be reading it during January, so that the discussion coincides with Marti Luther King Day. It is a Beacon Press book, available through the UUA Bookstore for $16. If we order 10 or more copies, there would be a 20% discount. You can sign up at the Social Justice Table in the Dorothy Hall and/or contact Suzanne Kelly.

5 November 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 5 Council crier notes Nov Speaking of covenants Your UUSB council continues to address a dizzying docket of organizational details rental policies, fundraising initiatives, staff benefit packages, our annual budget process, safe congregation policies, liaising with all our committees, and the ever-growing complexities of our busy church calendar. However, this month we ll skip the details of those usual suspects (though we re happy to discuss with anyone who s interested!). Instead, we d like to share with you our council covenant. Our congregation is engaging in the important, yearlong process of crafting a congregational covenant. We strongly endorse this process for our UUSB community. As a council, we recently went through a similar, though more abbreviated process. We thought about how we want to be together and work together, so that we can be efficient and effective without losing our focus on the deeper reasons why we gather together every month to share this work. It was a useful exercise that united us in renewed dedication to a shared vision. Maybe that is what the covenanting process is all about. Here is our current council covenant, which we call our promises. We read it together every time we meet: We will actively listen to each other. We will hold each other accountable. We will assume good intentions. We will be respectful. We will be guided by loving kindness. We will be positive and open to new ideas on how to reach goals. We will work towards a united congregation. We will bring humor and joy to our work. May your November bring good food, good friends, and warm shelter Your church council, Becky Anderson Tom Bickford Catherine Foxson Eric Olson Rosemary Parsons Will Seavey Robin Wood Gayle Zydlewski Our YoUUth The Maine Midcoast Youth Group will have an informational meeting on November 11th at 3:00 PM in Belfast, ME. This initial meeting is designed to bring both youth, parent(s) / guardian(s), and leaders together to discuss the outline of this year s program including the details of the service learning trip in Maine The Program is open to youth years of age. If you are a youth, or if you have a youth who is interested in being a part of this group, please attend the November 11th meeting where applications for the program will be available. Meeting dates for this year s Maine Midcoast Youth Group are: December 9, January 13, February 10, March 10, and April 14. Mark your calendars and save these dates. This year s program is focused on a trip in Maine. Participants in this year s program will be given priority for joining next year s anticipated trip to Guatemala. For more information, come to the information meeting or contact Rev. Drew at: drewuu2@gmail.com. The Mid-Coast Religious Education Directors will be hosting a Regional Workshop entitled The Future of Faith Formation. It will be held at UUSB on Nov. 17th, 10 AM 3 PM. During this informational workshop they will explore the future of faith formation in our congregations. While our RE programs may be in great shape today, let s consider what they might look like in 5-10 years. How can we gracefully grow our programs while keeping them relevant for the times and, at the same time, be able to provide flexible faith formation opportunities for our community? Let s start the conversation! Kim Sweeny, the workshop presenter, is a credentialed religious educator and independent consultant who worked for 7 years as the Lead for Faith Formation and Safe Congregations on th euua s New England Regional staff team. She is the author of The Death of Sunday School and the Future of Faith Formation. If you would like to read the article, you ll find it at: For more info, see UUSB DRE, Karen Childs.

6 November 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 6 Holiday Activities...for your participation! For the UU Holiday Gi Basket Challenge Do you have any basket-worthy items, including baskets that you can put aside for our very lucrative UUSB Holiday Gift Basket Silent Auction?? On Saturday, December 1st from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, we will be making gift baskets to raise money along side of the UUSB Wreath Makers. This is not a call for yard sale items -we need new or like-new items that would work in a gift basket (e.g., anything from cookbooks to teapots to tools to scarves, etc.). It isn t too soon to start thinking about this important church fundraising event. If you don t have a place to store them, please contact Suzanne Kelly. Suzanne would REALLY appreciate volunteers to help her on the Friday before the wreath/basket making (i.e., Nov. 30th) for organizing items and materials. ALSO, a reminder to all UUSB committees, a holiday gift-basket creation from your team would be most welcome! We are also searching for a great RAFFLE ITEM (nice quilt, painting, etc.), as this often brings in much money. Contact Suzanne, if you come up with something. Thank you! Annual UUSB Holiday Wreath Making Saturday, December 1st This is an important, fun fundraiser for UUSB. The wreaths you help put together will be sold for $20 and they usually go fast! (Elves get first choice!) See Sue McKay for details. Help Send Seasons Greetings to Incarcerated UUs For several years, I have participated a pen-pal program with The UU Church of the Larger Fellowship's (CLF) Prison Ministry Program. This year CLF is trying to recruit UU's from all over the country in sending 890 holiday cards to CLF members experiencing incarceration, and they need our help. As a free-world pen pal, you will surely understand the loneliness many of our members behind bars experience. CLF wants to send mail to all of our incarcerated members, not just those with pen pals. Here is how you can help: You can either go into Rev. Drew's mail box and get a card, or provide your own (card must be a simple flat, non-glitter card with a white envelope); Using a pen only, write a seasonal message; Sign your first name only, and place your card unaddressed, back into Rev. Drew's mailbox downstairs by his office. Rev. Drew will gather the cards and mail them to the Church of the Larger Fellowship in time for the winter holidays. Deadline for cards is November 22 (Thanksgiving Day). CLF will mail the cards from their headquarters in Boston. Invite your friends to join you! Pass around a few cards at your next committee meeting, take a card home and send one from your family, or fill out a couple during coffee hour. In 2016, we sent over 30 cards to the CLF ministry program. I am hoping we can send even more this year.
