2 June 2016 The Chalice and Chimes Page 2 Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor 120 Park Street Bangor, ME Worship: Sunday, 10:00 AM Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Telephone: (207) uubangor@gmail.com Website: Minister: Rev. Andrew Moeller Minister Emerita: Rev. Becky Gunn Music Director: Nancy Lewis Director Religious Education: Karen Childs Church Administrator: Susan Vernal Our Mission Statement The Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor is an historically liberal religious community, celebrating diversity and supporting spiritual growth and social responsibility in each child and adult. A Welcoming Congregation We welcome individuals and families of all religious upbringings, racial and ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations. We, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person. A Green Sanctuary The UU Society of Bangor, recognized as a Green Sanctuary by the Unitarian Universalist Association, endeavors to incorporate care for the Earth into its worship and religious education while working to promote environmental justice and sustainable living. We covenant to affirm and promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part. Dear UUSB Members, Families and Friends, It s been almost two weeks since I was so energetically called by UUSB to be your new minister. I am still feeling very excited, and I am eagerly looking forward to starting my official duties with UUSB beginning August 1st. Between now and then, I will be wrapping up my duties and saying goodbye to the UU Society of Laconia, NH, where I have had the pleasure of serving the last four years as minister, and I will begin to pack my things for the move up to ME. In June, I will attend the UU Minister s Association Annual meeting and UUA General Assembly (GA) in Columbus, OH (perhaps I will see a couple of you there ). After GA, I plan on spending some time visiting my family in Michigan and sailing my 26th Port Huron to Mackinaw Island Race in mid-july. During the summer, I will be making a couple of trips up to Bangor to look at apartments and explore the area so that I will be ready to move at the end of July. When I arrive in August, I will be spending the month meeting with UUSB committees and leadership and getting myself organized so that I am ready to start off the Fall/Winter/Spring cycle of the congregational year well prepared and rested. I will officially start my preaching duties at UUSB on September 11th. Once I arrive in Bangor, I also hope to explore some of the fun area events and places in Bangor like the Bangor Folk Festival. If you have any suggestions, I look forward to hearing about them. Thanks to Karen Childs, I have created a public Rev. Drew Facebook site ( where you can follow my occasional updates over the summer and hear my random reflections on the passing scene. In the meantime, I wish you all a wonderful summer. May you all find some special ways to explore, enjoy the warm weather, and the Spirit of Life that renews the soul and connects us all to one another. Namaste, Rev. Drew From the Minister

And, we counted at least 10 UUSBers personing other HOPE tables. Deb Walters spoke about her 2500-mile solo kayaking journey from Maine to Guatemala to raise money for Safe Passages. There were 24 people in attendance, and UU Youth also raised money. Rank Choice Voting Training was directed by Natalie Norton and an RCV representative. It was well received and other trainings will be held throughout the State, with Natalie holding another one at our church sometime in late summer. She ll keep us posted. Last Stop on Market Street ( 2016 Newbery Award winner) was presented to UUSB Youth by the SJ Committee on RE Sunday in honor of Rev. Senator Mitchell to Speak at Civil Discourse Event The Maine Council of Churches is excited to announce that Senator George Mitchell will be the featured speaker at their 2016 election year Civil Discourse event entitled From Mudslinging to Mutual Respect: How to Make Politics More Civil. The public is invited to attend this very special opportunity on October 20th in Waterville. Doors will open for breakfast at 7:30 AM, and Senator Mitchell will begin speaking promptly at 8:00 AM. He plans to leave ample time after his remarks for Q&A with the audience. There is no charge to attend, but space is limited, so folks are asked to register in advance. In late August, you should check the MCC website ( or their Facebook page for more information about how to register and to get directions to the venue in Waterville. Source: Maine Council of Churches of Fri., May 13, 2016 (paraphrased) If the Maine Minimum Wage Initiative passes, close to 90,000 workers whose families don t make enough to reliably pay for food, housing, heat, transportation, and healthcare could see an average increase in income of nearly $4,000. And when workers in low-wage jobs earn more, they are most likely to spend it at local businesses, growing local economies. 6 June 2016 The Chalice and Chimes Page 6 Summer Program Notes and Reminders Reminder: Choir and many small groups or committees do not meet during the summer. It is best to call ahead and check with a group facilitator for details. Other good ways to keep informed about our church community over the summer: 1) read your weekly e-new; 2) read Council minutes on the Dorothy bulletin board during fellowship time on Sunday; 3) regularly check the church website and calendar (uubangor.org); 4) feel free to contact the church office with any questions of concerns. Sunday morning services will continue to be held at 10:00 AM. Be sure to check your weekly e-news for more details on summer service topics as they become available. FYI: The Food Cupboard still distributes food in the summer months. We will have Food Cupboard Collection on second Sundays as usual in July and August, as well as the Personal Care Items collection on third Sundays. Thank you for your continued generosity. During the summer months especially, we need people to volunteer to help at the Soup Kitchen cook-and-serve offered to the needy on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army soup kitchen. If you are able and willing, we really need you! FMI, call Marj Lawrence. The Fresh Start/Alcoholics Anonymous meetings will continue throughout the summer. The group meet Monday through Friday, 12-1 PM, in the Vestry. Please be respectful of their privacy if you are in the building. Reminder: This newsletter is not published in July or August. The next deadline, for the September issue, is August 15, 2016, at noon, to the newsletter editor; contributions to uubangor@gmail.com. Each listing is based on the information we have on file in our computer. If your info is incorrect or outdated, please send a change or correction to Susan in the church office, or uubangor@gmail.com. It is not too late to get a copy of the 2016 UUSB Annual Report or the updated Member/Friend Directory. Contact Susan Vernal in the church office to request a copy.
