Andrew Moeller Culturally, we celebrate youth and agility but neglect the ul mate reality that someday we will all die. O en, we are so caught up in the moment that we forget to realize that dying is just as much a part of life as birth. Talking about death is o en seen as something that is taboo, instead of a powerful, mul -faceted spiritual experience. It can bring great healing and perspec ve, and it can be extremely painful and destruc ve. Together, we will look at what it means to embrace death as part of life and prepare for our own journeys home. Join us a er the service as we kick off our four-part workshop series on "Preparing for the Journey Home." October 28 - "Courage and Kindness in Troubled Times" This Sunday we are honored to welcome Bruce Kno s, the Director of the UU United Na ons Office, who is coming to visit us all the way from New York City. The UUSB Choir will sing.

2 October 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 2 This month, our congregational theme is sanctuary. Drew s Views In our everyday lexicon, the term sanctuary often is used in the context of sheltering immigrants in a church or space where they cannot be apprehended by federal ICE agents. Sanctuary, however, is a whole lot more. In its the broader sense, the term "sanctuary" is simply a place where one feels comfortable or safe. A place where one cannot be molested by that which is chasing and perusing you. A place where one feels at ease. As a white heterosexual male, I might say that the world is my sanctuary, but that is not true either any more. Just look and see what happens when one speaks out against the status quo. One of the fundamental needs in all of our lives is finding a place where we feel safe, a place that we can call sanctuary. There has been tons of research to show that people learn better when they feel safe; people more likely to engage when they feel safe; and people are willing to take more risks when they feel safe and loved just merely for who they are. According to psychologist Abraham Maslow's famous "Hierarchy of Needs," we learn that after having our basic physiological needs of food, clothing and shelter met, the next critical need is safety. Safety comes before belonging, and it even comes before love. Often we think of sanctuary as a place, but more often than not, it is more than a place -- it is a culture or community. Last month at our first "Congregational Conversation on Creating A Covenant," participants reflected on what made it hard and what made it easy to join different groups. In the brainstorming that followed, there was some level of agreement that people feel more comfortable joining groups that have openly expressed values, purposes, and expectations. Why? Because it creates a higher degree of safety when we know what the expectations are. We feel more comfortable because we know the why and the process of how we will get there. This is one of the fundamental building blocks of building a beloved community. This is how a covenant can play an integral role in developing a clear sense of purpose for a beloved community that serves as a sanctuary for our process of searching together for truth and meaning. As I follow the news and tweets of a president who likes to flaunt and disregard many of the unwritten expectations dignity that has traditionally associated with the office; when I see senators and congressional representatives mistreating each other -- seemingly with little concern; when I look at victims of sexual abuse denied a fair hearing and the sensitive treatment they deserve; and when I meet people who are fleeing their countries of origin to satisfy their basic physiological needs or their basic needs for safety, I am convinced how essential and how life-giving and affirming our congregation is. I am convinced how much more affirming we can become by making it even clearer what it means to be a place of clarity of purpose and safety, where the human spirit can grow. Let us continue to strive to be a sanctuary for ourselves and our children and all who enter our doors. Let us be a House of Sanctuary for the community of which we are a part. It is easy to fall into the temptation to "do unto others as they do unto you," but it is much more precious to embrace the ethic of "doing unto others that which is needed to create safety, compassion, and openness which are at the core of building the capacity of love." May this be so! Namasté, (photo credits: Laural Russell)

5 October 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 5 Council crier notes September 2018 Your UUSB council gathered on Sept. 20, our first meeting since our wonderful Saturday retreat with Rebecca Liberty on Sept. 1. Here are some of the things we discussed and worked on together: Committee connections: One of our new initiatives is to invite members of at least one UUSB committee to join us during our monthly meetings. We hope it will serve several purposes 1. Offer an opportunity for face-to-face appreciation of hard-working volunteers. 2. Open a more direct line of communication between committees and council. 3. Offer committees an opportunity to share their needs, wishes, and ideas directly with council members. Share the plate recipients: Council voted to assign several months worth of worthy share the plate organizations: October: UU United Nations Office; November: EAAA fuel assisance program; December: UUSB food programs; January: Bangor Area Homeless Shelter; February: Hope Rising (survivors of human trafficking) New fundraiser: Council discussed UUSB s pressing need for new fundraiser leadership and ideas. This month council will be approaching a couple of people to see if they are interested in joining a fund raising brainstorming, and organizing team. If you are interested in joining this team, please talk to one of our council members. Safer congregation: Council continued our conversations about how to remain a welcoming presence in the Bangor community while attending to the safety and security of those in and around our property. We would like to make sure that at least two people are present in the Dorothy Memorial throughout church services, so that we may keep the door to the church unlocked. We discussed posting signage in and around UUSB that both establishes clear boundaries (ie: No Trespassing Premises Under Surveillance. ) and portrays compassion (ie: Your safety is important to us. ) More elaborate technological security involves a lengthier process and more funding, but we will continue to examine our options. We also discussed sending a general reminder to the congregation about UUSB s gun-free zone policy. Rentals: The president and secretary of the contradancing group joined our meeting to discuss adding a family dance hour at the beginning of their rental evenings. Council voted to allow the contradancers a grace period through December 2018 at their current rate, in the hopes that they will grow their participation and bring in more funds to cover higher rental costs. We reminded the group that they must get their liability insurance paperwork to Susan Vernal immediately, and urged the group to take care of scheduling with Susan as soon as possible. The New Renaissance Singers, led by our music director, hope to use UUSB for their rehearsals, on Thursdays following UUSB choir rehearsal. They, too, expressed budget constraints. Council agreed to discuss with them an offer of the discounted rate we give other groups like Women With Wings. We will also explore with them other funding negotiations around their concert rentals. Those are the highlights of our meeting time together. We are also excited about upcoming UUSB events the congregational covenanting process, the organ celebration, the launching of a new RE and adult education church year, and theme-based-ministry are just a taste of all the energetic doings and innovations in our UUSB family. Wishing you warmth and magical moments of October light Your church council Becky Anderson Rosemary Parsons Tom Bickford Will Seavey Catherine Foxson Robin Wood Eric Olson Gayle Zydlewski

8 October 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 8 Treasurer s Report for August 2018 This year, the Treasurer s Report will have a new look. Instead of lots of numbers, I will report on specific income and expenses as they occur. As of 8/31/18, we have received $28,319 in pledges. In August pledge receipts were $3,681. As you can tell, many people made their pledge payments in full at the start of the year. On average, the monthly pledge receipts should be $10,412. Income and expenses are both low during the summer months. For example, during the summer our monthly heating bill is $30. As of 8/31/18, total income was $42,888, and expenses were $36,204. Fundraising is an important part of our income stream. The first big event is the Great Pumpkin Yard Sale on Saturday October 20, We will need donations and helpers the day before. Tell all your friends about this great event. A fundraiser that happens every Sunday is the sale of grocery cards for shopping at Hannaford. These are gift cards that are worth the amount you pay UUSB. The church gets a discount for buying in bulk. I suggest that when you start writing that shopping list, write a check to UUSB for your $25, $50 or $100 gift cards (or any combination.) And thanks Rosemary Parsons Treasurer Wye Izzit (An occasional column) Dear Wye Izzit, Oh! Please help! Every week I want to make my regular contribution to UUSB, but the collectors are so quick that I don t have time to write my check. I get really flustered and sometimes I make a mess. Nervously, Uni U. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Uni U., How about writing your check a day ahead? Some folks hold a check-writing party with snacks and plenty of wine. The Sunday plates are very full after that. Encouragingly, Wye Izzit Meditation Group The UUSB Mindfulness Meditation group is back from its summer break. This month, we will be meeting on October 2nd and October 16th (the first and third Tuesdays) from 5:45 PM till 7 PM in the sanctuary. No previous experience needed. Come and treat yourself to a midweek break of relaxed centering and concentration. All are welcome.

9 October 2018 The Chalice and Chimes Page 9 Social Justice Committee News Death With Dignity Laurie Cartier is collecting signatures to put the Death With Dignity Act on the ballot for November You can find out all about this at deathwithdignity.org, or ask Laurie when you see her at church on any Sunday, by at laurie.cartier@maine.edu or by Phone at Signatures will be collected through election day (Nov. 13, 2018), then counted and sent in to the state for authentication, etc. We need 80,000 signatures! If you are a registered voter, have not signed another petition for this cause, and are in favor of people having the choice to die with dignity, please see Laurie to sign a petition. Thank you! The UUSB Social Justice Committee has decided to take part in the Common Read program in January The UU Common Read selection, Justice on Earth: People of Faith Working at the Intersections of Race, Class, and Environment, shows how environmental justice, racial justice, and economic justice are not competing issues, but intertwined. Justice on Earth is a 2018 Skinner House book edited by Manish Mishra-Marzetti and Jennifer Nordstrom. Learn more about the UU Common Read. Help Send Seasons Greetings to Incarcerated UUs For several years, I have participated a pen-pal program with The UU Church of the Larger Fellowship's (CLF) Prison Ministry Program. This year CLF is trying to recruit UU's from all over the country in sending 890 holiday cards to CLF members experiencing incarceration, and they need our help. As a free-world pen pal, you will surely understand the loneliness many of our members behind bars experience. CLF wants to send mail to all of our incarcerated members, not just those with pen pals. Here is how you can help: You can either go into Rev. Drew's mail box and get a card, or provide your own (card must be a simple flat, non-glitter card with a white envelope); Using a pen only, write a seasonal message; Sign your first name only, and place your card un-addressed, back into Rev. Drew's mailbox downstairs by his office. Rev. Drew will gather the cards and mail them to the Church of the Larger Fellowship in time for the winter holidays. Deadline for cards is November 22 (Thanksgiving Day). CLF will mail the cards from their headquarters in Boston. Invite your friends to join you! Pass around a few cards at your next committee meeting, take a card home and send one from your family, or fill out a couple during coffee hour. In 2016, we sent over 30 cards to the CLF ministry program. I am hoping we can send even more this year.

UUSB Church Cancellation Guidelines In the case of bad weather, the most important thing is for everyone to be safe. Please do not travel to the UUSB for morning worship if you feel that doing so would be unsafe. UUSB may need to be cancelled due to no lights, no heat, no water, disasters, and other unforeseen circumstances. The decision to cancel worship and religious education will be made by Sue McKay, Rev. Drew Moeller and Laurie Cartier who will make such decision by 7:00 Sunday morning. An announcement will be put on the outgoing phone message of the church office ( ); announcements will also go out to the local network television and radio stations; if possible (power permitting), one will be sent out via , on the UUSB Facebook page, and posted on the UUSB website ( About Our Newsletter The Chalice and Chimes is published ten times a year (Sept-June).
