There are so many comparisons and contrasts made throughout the book. But, for what purpose? This is one of many questions we are going to consider this weekend. But also, how do our cultural proverbs help or hinder us from understanding the Biblical Proverbs that we just got done reading? Yet another question for us to consider. We are also going to focus on one proverb in particular from chapter 28 concerning confession. But, let s be honest, we don t talking about confession, and especially don t like practicing it (possibly outside of Sunday mornings)! So, we re going to have to deal with our uneasiness with confession and slow down and walk through just one proverb on confession, and ultimately through this one proverb we will see the work of Christ for us, and also consider the work that God is accomplishing in our lives through the habit of confession. Ash Down Opening Hymn: 915 Today Your Mercy Calls Us Old Testament Reading: Proverbs 28:1-13 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability

3 will long continue. A poor man who oppresses the poor is a beating rain that leaves no food. Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely. Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways. The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father. Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit gathers it for him who is generous to the poor. If one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination. Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance. A rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has understanding will find him out. When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, people hide themselves. Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Epistle Reading: Romans 5:12-21 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:27-31 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, Have mercy on us, Son of David. When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, Do you believe that I am able to do this? They said to him, Yes, Lord. Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it done to you. And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, See that no one knows about it. Hughes If you are a guest with us and desire to receive the Sacrament, please read the following: Because we desire that all who participate in Christ s body and blood will receive the blessings promised therein, and because the Scriptures call for a self-examination prior to participating in the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28) we have found the following questions helpful in preparing for the Lord s Supper. a. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? b. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God s mercy in Christ? c. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God s Son and my personal Savior? d. Do I believe that His body and blood are truly present in the bread and wine of the Lord s Supper. e. Do I intend by the power of the Holy Spirit to change my sinful life and strive to walk according to God s will? As you come to the Lord s Supper you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord, that you believe His body and blood are present, and you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of the church, proclaiming his death until he comes again. Homebuilders is a group at St. Paul that provides monthly Bible studies focused on marriage, parenting and families. This year, we have found a great study on marriage from Timothy and Kathy Keller called The Meaning of Marriage. We also plan fun events for families and adults only to help build strong families. 5 Happenings & Announcements ~ SCRIP STORE There will be a SCRIP store in the FLC between services this morning. JUNIOR YOUTH GROUP meets on Wednesday, September 19 at 5:30 p.m. Supper is provided. LADIES BIBLE STUDY meets on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the Youth Room. They are studying Your Strong Suit by Donna Pyle. All ladies of St. Paul are invited to attend. MEN S FELLOWSHIP meets on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY... Thursday, September 20 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the FLC. We are studying God of Creation a study of Genesis The opening lines and chapters of Genesis teach us fundamental truths about God. We watch Him bring light after darkness, order after chaos, and rest after toil all through the power of His Word. Even if you haven t signed up, please join us! CHANCEL CHOIR begins rehearses on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the choir loft. Everyone high school age and older is invited to join us! The only other requirement is that you love to sing in praise and thanks to our Lord. We have a lot of fun, fellowship, and learn a wide variety of music to offer during worship. We sing approximately once a month at the 8:00 and 10:45 Sunday services as well as present a Christmas Cantata in late December. Are you a new member here at St. Paul? Are you a new visitor to St. Paul? Have you been here a while, but still don t feel connected within the congregation? If so, join us for our first Monthly Meet-up!! We understand that it can be difficult to make connections with others in a congregation of our size, and so we want to be intentional about helping people who are new to our congregation feel welcome and connected here, so that together we can be Rooted in Christ, Growing in Grace, and Reaching the Lost. So, we re going to get together on Saturday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the Family Life Center. There will be some light refreshments and drinks, but it will be a time primarily focused on getting to know other people who are new, being connected with a few other people in the congregation, and also learn about some of the ministries that we offer here at St. Paul. 6 On Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, St. Paul will be holding our annual All-Church Rummage Sale. Proceeds will go to our Youth Ministry. All members of St. Paul are invited to donate items. The Family Life Center will be open for drop-off on Wednesday, October 3, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 4, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Please price your own items - except for clothing, books, and glassware. After the sale, leftover items will be given to Hope Salvation Army, Hope Ministries or other charitable organizations. Anyone who enjoys baking is certainly welcome to bring some delicious goodies for the sale. Baked goods are always a big hit! We will need a lot of help running the sale. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to help with the Rummage Sale. Sign up sheets are in the Resurrection Window hallway.

Bell ringers are wanted for the Alleluia Ringers adult bell choir. Women and men ages high school up are encouraged to join us! We meet each Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. for rehearsals in the balcony. Meals from the Heartland On Wednesday, October 10, all 6-12th grade youth are invited to help fight hunger at the Meals from the Heartland packaging facility in West Des Moines. We will meet at St. Paul at 5:25pm and travel together. We will package meals until 8:00pm, returning around 8:30.
