2 SHEPHERD S VOICE We are called at our baptism to bear witness to the faith In every age, Christ and his Church have been persecuted. Despite his message of love and compassion (or perhaps because of it), Jesus was taunted by leaders and ordinary people alike. Even his death on a cross and his victorious Resurrection did not convince every person that he was the Son of God, the promised Messiah. Some of his followers abandoned him. His Apostles faced ridicule and death. Countless early Christians were martyred for their faith. Religious communities have split apart over doctrine and liturgical practices. Wars have been fought, crusades have been waged and earthly kingdoms have been torn apart all over differences in religion or political ideologies. Let us draw insights from our Readings this Sunday. Today, we encounter the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 20:10-13), who, in his youth, had been called by the Lord to be a prophet during times of great political upheaval. He says, I have committed my cause to the Lord. Despite imprisonment, scourging, threats from enemies and former friends, and his own interior crises, Jeremiah remained steadfast because he knew the Lord was with him like a mighty warrior. Saint Paul (Romans 5:12-15) reminds the Romans that Adam brought sin and death into the world and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned. He compares the effect of Adam s disobedience to God s will to Christ s total obedience to the Father s will-and the effect that each had on the human race. One is the cause of the human condition -the other, the source of our salvation. For the past several Sundays, we have been hearing the Gospel accounts of how Christ called his Apostles. He carefully shared the Father s message of love as mercy with each of them. But at the same time, Jesus acknowledged that they would encounter a world that was hostile to that message. In today s Gospel, Jesus continues his instruction to them, cautioning them to fear no one speak in the light.proclaim on the housetops. They would be protected by the same Father who cares for sparrow. Most of all, they should never deny Christ before others. Like Jeremiah and the Apostles, Jesus has called us too. At our baptism, we became followers, and through the grace of the sacraments and the support of our Christian community, we have been called to share that same message of mercy, love and salvation through Christ. We, too, face a world that can be hostile to Christianity and is indifferent to its message. So, how are we doing? Have we ever been too silent, too weak, too uninformed, and too docile? Do we stand up to what the culture is proclaiming or do we capitulate to its temptations? Have we ever gone so far as to deny Christ before others? Let us continue to pray that God s grace will sustain us, and that we will give better witness to the truth of the Gospel and salvation to a world in need of hearing it. We welcome the Archbishop of Capiz, Philippines and his two priests doing the mission appeal. Please be generous to Archbishop Advincula s appeal. Please keep me and my family in your prayers as I do with you while am in the Philippines. God bless. Fr. Roni
3 Archdiocese of Capiz (Philippines) Constructs Lolek s Home Situated in the island of Panay in the Visayas (Philippines), Capiz was established as a Diocese in 1951 and elevated to an Archdiocese in Capiz is a home to a population of 701,664 and around 93 per cent of whom are Catholics. Currently, Capiz is blessed to have 130 diocesan priests who minister to the spiritual needs of the faithful. Some are on loan to some dioceses in the United States and the Pacific Islands, others are on further studies, but majority are working in the archdiocese. However some are already old and sickly. This is precisely the reason why there is a need to prepare a decent place for them where they can enjoy their retirement days or recuperate from their illnesses. This retirement home is called Lolek s Home for the Sick and the Aged Priests. Lolek by the way was the nickname of St. John Paul II, under whose patronage this retirement home is entrusted. The proposed retirement home complex consists of three (duplex) units with an estimated building cost of US$ 176, and a 2-storey residence building with an estimated building cost of US$ 116, which will house the Merciful Brothers of St. Joseph (MBSJ), a religious group assigned to take care of our priests and to supervise and maintain the area. The total project construction cost amounts to US$ 292, At present, with the amount locally raised from fun-runs, special collections from the faithful, and donations from generous individuals, the construction of the first of the three duplexes has already been completed. Each apartment of every duplex has a room for a priest and a small room for his caregiver. However, the great cost of building Lolek's Home with the needed facilities and personnel is simply beyond the meager means collected from and donated by the local faithful. This brings the Archbishop and the Clergy of the Archdiocese of Capiz humbly knocking at the generous hearts of the faithful of the Diocese of Pittsburgh through the work of MISSION APPEAL. In this connection, Most Rev. Jose F. Advincula Jr., D.D., Archbishop of Capiz, Rev. Virgilio F. Ciudadano, Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Capiz and Fr. Anthony Nigel D. Bernas, a priest of the Archdiocese of Capiz who now ministers in the Diocese of Peoria in Illinois, will be conducting the said Mission Appeal in your Parish Our Lady of Rosary on June 24-25, Please pray for, help, and support this project for the old and sick priests of the Archdiocese of Capiz. Surely, your donations will be of great help in the realization of Lolek's Home and for which you will be forever remembered and thanked for. Thank you very much and we entrust this endeavor to the protection and motherly care of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary

The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out Amen! and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God s mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider s call to attention: Lift up your hearts! Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. We welcome all newcomers to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church and invite you to register as members of our parish family. If you choose not to do so, we cannot guarantee that they will be there after the storm. WALKING TOWARD GOD If we walk one step toward God, God will run ten steps toward us. Anonymous FEAR NOT How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today s scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that reigned from Adam to Moses (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal. Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear Do not be afraid! The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully present to save us through the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
