Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the face of the earth. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 2 SHEPHERD S VOICE The Power of the Keys The Church today celebrates its two great pillars: the apostles Peter and Paul. The liturgy honors them for the gift of faith received through their preaching. Peter, as the head of the apostles, preached mostly to the Jewish people, while Paul brought the Gospel to the pagans. But it is the same Gospel of Jesus, and they have the same mission. Paul writes, They saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter to the circumcised, for the one who worked in Peter for an apostolate to the circumcised worked also in me for the Gentiles (Gal 2:7-8). The Church of Rome held primacy over the other churches from the beginning because it had the relics of the two apostles. Peter and Paul were martyred there during the persecution of the emperor Nero around 64 AD. Peter was crucified upside down and Paul was slain by beheading because as a Roman citizen he could not be subjected to the indignity of crucifixion. The Gospel speaks of the power of the keys. In Jesus time, as well as in the evangelist Matthew s, the scribes and the Pharisees who were the teachers of the Law held the key to give entrance into the kingdom because they sat on the chair of Moses (Mt 23:2), that is, they had the authority of Moses. But they exercised the power of the key in such a way as to be an obstacle to its entrance. They themselves did not enter and they stopped those trying to enter it (Lk 11:52). Jesus says that the key is now given to his followers, especially Simon Peter. The power to bind and to loose refers to the authority to declare a commandment binding or not binding, and the disciplinary power to bind the transgressor. In particular, this refers to the authority to open heaven through forgiveness. Jesus alone holds this authority, but this has been given to Peter. But what is said to Peter (v9) is applied also to all disciples (Mt 18:18). It is the community that holds this power, but someone in the community, like a single leader, can exercise this power in the performance of the community s ministry. It should be noted that before the keys are entrusted to Peter, he first gained the title rock on which Jesus wanted to build his church. Peter got that honor to be called rock after he gave the right answer to Jesus question who do you say that I Am? Peter got the right answer: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. This confession of Peter earned him the honor but also a great responsibility as the rock upon which Jesus build his church. Here we are taught that the key to faithful discipleship and being church: knowing and confessing Jesus. Without a personal relationship with Jesus, the church cannot remain faithful to its mission. Peter and Paul are models for us of how we are to be church: by continually pursuing who Jesus is for us, being faithful to Jesus mission, and surrendering to whatever risks are necessary to proclaim Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. We may not proclaim Christ in great speeches, as did Peter and Paul. But we do proclaim Christ everyday by the rocksolid way we live what Jesus has taught us. Self-giving and surrendering ourselves to God s will bring us the same victory shared by Peter and Paul. Peter and Paul suffered persecution for proclaiming who Christ was (first and second readings). What enabled them to remain faithful to their mission was their rock-solid trust in God s ultimate protection the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, I was rescued from the lion s mouth and the Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom (second reading and gospel). Our celebration of their lives reminds us of our call to participate in their mission and to stand fast when that mission brings us hardship, resistance, and suffering. They have led the way; we must follow. God Bless, Fr. Roni Villamor S H N S A! D I T O A! B 7:45 K.C. 4 Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church Larose, Louisiana June 28 th & June 29 th, 2014 Parish-Wide Feasibility Study Begins! As we continue with the planning for the expansion of our beloved church and school, we are moving forward with a Feasibility Study, a process designed to ensure that we, as a parish community, are committed to our goals of future expansion. Such an effort requires thoughtful planning to ensure success. I am seeking the advice of our parishioners and friends and your input is essential. Your opinions, and those of fellow parishioners and friends will help us to formulate a plan of action. The findings from the questions asked during the study are intended to give the parish an accurate view of the support that can be expected from the parishioners for a capital campaign so together, we can make well-informed decisions about the future of Our Lady of the Rosary. To assist us, the parish has retained Guidance In Giving, Inc., a professional, Catholic development organization, to work with our staff in coordinating all aspects of the Feasibility Study. Based on opinions and input collected, the firm will guide us in formulating a plan of action and will make recommendations regarding our next steps in implementing a successful capital campaign. Please plan on participating in this vital endeavor. Thank you in advance for your help! Watch for the Feasibility Study invitation in the mail Every registered family in the parish will be mailed a personal invitation from Father Roni to participate in the Feasibility Study in one of two ways: 1) Personal interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks with a cross-section of our parish families. We ask that all invited to be interviewed please contact the parish office to schedule an appointment, once you receive that invitation letter in the mail. 2) A Mail & (Online) Survey will be sent to registered parishioners of Our Lady of the Rosary. The survey is also available online with instructions on how to participate found in your letter. All parishioners are asked to complete the confidential Survey and return it to the Feasibility Study Office (located in the Parish Office) no later than June 21 st. For more information, please contact the Feasibility Study Office at We are dependent upon your participation in this Feasibility Study in order to properly plan for our future. This is our parish and our school; we are asking everyone to get and remain involved in shaping the future of our beloved church and parish school. Father Ronilo Villamor, Pastor
