At Briarwood we have wonderful Sunday School communities where you can find an avenue for studying the Word of God in a small group atmosphere. Our Sunday School communities offer extraordinary opportunities for fellowship and ministry. Dive in and take hold of this vital part of our church by immersing yourself in a community committed to equipping Christians to reach Birmingham to reach the world for Christ. Harry Reeder, Pastor/Teacher The Purpose of Sunday School Communities The purpose of Briarwood s Sunday School Community Ministry is to teach consistently the whole counsel of God in the context of our congregational communities; to encourage the fellowship of believers; and to build disciples by equipping Christians to make an impact for Jesus Christ, beginning in the home and church and moving to Birmingham and beyond.

4 Pastor s Inquirers/Membership Class Church Library This is a class for newcomers and prospective members taught by Pastor Reeder and other pastors. Attending this class does not obligate you to join the church. We will cover connecting with Christ, with the Church, and with Briarwood. Classes are scheduled to begin September 16 and November 4, and will include two Sunday morning sessions, a Wednesday night session, and a Saturday morning session. Call us at or drop by the Membership Office across from the Church Receptionist. COLLEGE College (A-201) The 4 Faces of Christ College age. Although we have no idea what Jesus physically looked like (other than Isaiah saying The Anointed One would not stand out in a crowd), we do have 4 separate paintings of the same Savior and His message as given by 4 different men. As we work through each of the faces presented, the hope is to see the King and His Kingdom in a much clearer light. Teacher: George Shamblin. Team Leaders: Carlisles, Leibs. CP: Max Bunn. SP: Benny Parks. SINGLES Graduates & Career (M-202) The Mobilization for the Church A community for graduates to early 30s. When Jesus said, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, did He really mean that for me personally? Over the next 13 weeks, we will study how Jesus has mobilized the church, as well as being a journey together to discover our most strategic roles in the Great Commission. Teacher: Ryan Akers. Team Leaders: Wiersmas. CP: Stephen King. SP: Benny Parks. Leveraging Life (M-210) Highlights in Jeremiah A community for early 30 s to 45. Jeremiah is called the weeping Prophet. He was called at an early age to be God s instrument to deal with worldwide sin, specifically with Judah s sin. Their problem as well as ours, is the heart. Yet our God of grace rescues and restores. In One Accord (W-202) Encounters with God A community for 40 s and up. A community for 40 s and up. The Old Testament and the New Testament contain so many situations involving encounters of God with small groups, multitudes and especially the beloved characters we know in the Bible. But the most intriguing may be the One-on-one meetings between God and a chosen individual. All of these have an unforgettable outcome that still apply to our lives today. 6 THE ENTIRE FAMILY Family Life (GYM) Proverbs A class for the entire family. The book of Proverbs is one of the wisdom books in the Old Testament. This study will focus on how to honor God by adhering to the principles of Scripture applied to daily life. There is advice for parenting, warnings against following the ways of the world and encouragement to depend on the Lord for every decision and need in your life. Teacher: Walter Leveille. We will have two short courses taught: Paradoxical Life and Walking with God When Life is Hard. Teachers: Ty Dodge & Chuck Powell. Team Leaders: Hursts, Warlicks. CP & SP: Dave Matthews. YOUNG COUPLES & NEW FAMILIES The Oaks (E-006) Ephesians Engaged and newly married couples. Ephesians portrays Jesus Christ, our All in All! Come join us as we discover how our position in Christ affects our practice in life, and learn how to have a spiritual walk that is rooted in Christ s spiritual wealth. Teacher: Jason Ellerbee. In this study we will identify the lies that lead us to sin so that we can specifically preach the truth to ourselves. Teacher: Olan Stubbs. Team Leaders: Edwards, Ellerbees, Hendrys. CP & SP: Jason Ellerbee. Encounter (M-111) Practicing Prayer Young married couples starting families. This class will take a look at prayer in the Scriptures, with particular emphasis on insight and tips that are aimed at growing in our personal practice of prayer individually and corporately. YOUNG FAMILIES 5 Covenant Keepers (E-008) Practicing Prayer Young couples with infants to elementary age children. This class will take a look at prayer in the Scriptures, with particular emphasis on insight and tips that are aimed at growing in our personal practice of prayer individually and corporately. 7 Growing in Grace (E-005) Christian Apologetics Young couples with infants to elementary age children. According to I Peter 3:15, Christians must do more than know what we believe. The Bible commands us to also know why we believe it, and how to persuasively communicate it with others. Come be equipped with the reasons for the hope that is within us! Teacher: Jonathan Wood. Team Leaders: Marshalls, Martins, Thompsons. CP: Eric Reebals. SP: Ray Tucker. Heritage Builders (FH-B) 21st Century Men and Women Families with infants to elementary age children. Changes and challenges are occurring at an unprecedented rate in our culture and world. How do we understand them, address them from His Word and equip our children to do the same? Join us as we learn together how to be Godly leaders in this time and help others to be the same. Teacher: Kent Bailey. Families with infants to middle school age children. What is God s heart, design, and plan for the Nations? We will search the Scriptures together to learn more about God s love for the nations, His strategy to reach the nations, and Briarwood s specific engagement with the nations through our Global Missions Team and our international supported missionaries around the globe. STUDENT FAMILIES Firm Foundations (E-003) Meditations on Revelation Families with preschool to high school age children. This study looks more at devotional application rather than charting and interpretation. It tends to put the Book in its intended light, encourage believers to stand firm when the going gets tough. Teacher: Jay Mathews. Team Leaders: Clarks, Everetts, Millers, Russ Ponder. CP: Rob Genin. SP: Michael Wichlan. Growing Together (G-103) Psalms Families with preschool to high school age children. The poetry of the Psalms as one author states, speak to all seasons of our souls. As we journey through the Christian faith together, the Psalms help shape our hearts in worship toward God. Next Step (E-010) I Samuel Families with elementary to college age children. We will explore Israel through the lives of Hannah, Samuel, Saul, Jonathan and especially David to be challenged in our obedience to His Word and reminded of God s faithfulness to His covenant. 6

Inside Out (FH-C) Seeds of Faith Families with children in high school or older. Christians need models for their faith, and a proper historical perspective in order to understand the present day. This is a quarter-long look at the last two thousand years of Christian History. Each week we will learn about the lives of significant Christian figures who lived in and through those times, with the goal of personally applying the Biblical lessons and principles that emerge from our study. Teambuilders (W-203) One Another Passages: Living as One in Christ Families with children in high school or older. We are called to love one another, honor one another, encourage one another, serve one another and pray for one another all for His glory and that the world may believe that Jesus is the Christ and Lord of all. We will study the one another passages in order to learn how to live as one in Christ and to bear His fruit in our lives. Teacher: Benny Youngblood. Team Leaders: Chris Blazer, Harrises. CP: Stephen Cloud. SP: Benny Youngblood. Homefront (M-200) Acts Families with children in high school or older. We will be studying timeless truths applicable to our lives today. Teacher: Boo Mason. Team Leaders: Carters, Chappells, McCrorys, Oswells, Snoddys, Steelmans. CP: Seth Richardson. SP: Michael Wichlan. Hearts and Homes (A-204) Hebrews Families with children in high school or older. We will be entering into a study of the splendor and glory of our Lord and Savior as revealed to us in the majestic book of Hebrews. This study will strive to enhance our love for our glorious Savior and call us to worship Him as we hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. Part 2 Families with children in college or older. A study of WCF from chapter 19 to 33, which deals with several important subjects such as what is Christian Liberty?, do we keep the Sabbath?, what are the biblical grounds for Marriage and Divorce?, and other relevant topics. This fall we will learn timeless instructions and applications from the Scriptures that will help guide us as we grow in our walk with the Lord. Teacher: Dave Lewis. 9 Discovery (FH-A) New Heaven and New Earth A class for all ages and stages in life. Our incredible eternal life as believers, what it means for our future and what it means for our present. Teachers: John Donaldson & Tim Townes. Team Leaders: Donaldsons, Towneses. SP: Benny Youngblood. Mountain View (A-209) Warrior A class for all ages and stages in life. Warrior is a study of the Christian life viewed through the metaphorical lens of WWII. Scripture tells us that our enemy is threefold: the world, the flesh and the devil. We will use anecdotal stories from WWII to illustrate principles of the spiritual battle we call the Christian life. Teacher: Mike Wheeler. Team Leaders: Adamses, Blackmons, Goulds, Lindsays. CP & SP: Dave Lewis. ADULT FAMILIES Abundant Life (G-101) Encounters with the Master Empty nesters and grandparents. A look at the lives of the men who spent time with Jesus during His earthly ministry. Teacher: Larry Childs. Team Leaders: Cartwrights, Mullises, Yanceys. CP: Phil Reddick. SP: Dave Lewis. Deeper Life (Chapel) Luke 1 5 Empty nesters and grandparents. Luke provides a sweeping history of the early Christians in Luke Acts. This class will focus on the first portion of His great work. We will seek to learn how Jesus early years shaped his life and ministry and can shape Jesus disciples today. Teacher: Paul House. 10 WOMEN Women Impacting the World (A-205) The 13 Women of all walks and stages of life. Join us as we look at the apostles who are the foundation of the Household of God Ephesians 2: In this study, we will endeavor to explore how these ordinary men with weaknesses and flaws became extraordinary men who were empowered by the Holy Spirit to change the world for Christ. Teacher: Ray Tucker. Team Leaders: Donna Arrington, Tricia Corbett, Vicki Portis. CP & SP: Dave Lewis. Faithful Followers (Bride s Room) Luke Women of all walks and stages of life. Luke carefully and selectively records Jesus miracles, messages, and ministry to the least, the last, and the lost. Luke looks beyond Jesus as Messiah for the Jews and sees Jesus as Savior of the world. His message is still the good news for us today: Jesus is indeed the Savior of the world who has come to seek and to save the lost. Teacher: Donna Evans. INTERNATIONAL International (E-218, School Library) From Dirt to Salt English-speaking internationals. From Dirt to Salt: How God s Grace Transforms our Lives. When God created the first man Adam from dirt, His plan was for His people to be the salt of the earth. Matt. 5:13. This is a study of how God s grace transformed various people in the Old and New Testaments, and what we can learn from them as we grow in our ability to follow God in our lives.
