2 WELCOME TO CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH We are glad you are here to worship the living God! This worship folder is intended to walk you through the service, as well as provide you with devotional material to take home. IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP This Sunday is the traditional day we remember the "slaughter of the innocents." It is neither a comforting subject nor what we would normally consider a fitting passage to meditate upon during the Christmas season. However, it is good to be reminded that while Satan comes to kill and destroy, Jesus Christ was born to deal a death blow to death. May the gospel do the same in our own culture. Mirroring this historical event, our service moves from praise to lament and then to thanksgiving and hope. And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my son." Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more." 5 Pastoral Prayer Prayer of Confession of Sin The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Assurance of Grace Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 11 IN PREPARATION FOR THE SEASON OF ADVENT The four Sundays leading up to Christmas have traditionally been called Advent, a season of waiting and expectation. In ancient Rome, adventus was a ceremony in which townspeople would celebrate the arrival of the Emperor, usually after a victorious military campaign. Christians first commemorated Advent as a season of preparation for adult baptisms that would take place during the feast of Epiphany (January 6). Later, Christians tied Advent to the church's eager expectation for the second coming of Christ. It may not have been until the Middle Ages that Advent was linked to Christ's first coming at Christmas. Although we must be careful not to make too much of Christmas and Advent--since they come to us by way of church tradition rather than Scripture--it is surely appropriate that we sing about and celebrate the miracle of the incarnation. During the Advent season we reflect on the biblical themes of waiting, hoping, and longing. We also rejoice in the good news that salvation has come to us, Mary's Infant Child. Come, thou long expected Jesus born to set thy people free! From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; Dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. In this season of waiting, let us remember the crucified King who has already come, with anticipation for his coming again. 11
