We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon. EPISTLE READING: 1 John 5:21 Large Print Pew Bible, page 293 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Pew Bible, page 242 ANTHEM I Lift Up Mine Eyes to the Hills Paul Bouman (b. 1918) Summer Choir I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.

5 Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep; The Lord himself watches over you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand, so that the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; it is he who shall keep you safe. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in, from this time forth for evermore. -Psalm 121 GOSPEL READING: Matthew 5:19-24 Large Print Pew Bible, page 48 Pew Bible, page 4 The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ SERMON: A Vocabulary of Faith: Idolatry RESPONDING TO THE WORD *HYMN OF RESPONSE With Grateful Hearts Our Faith Professing Dr. Ron Shive ST. CLEMENT Our response to hearing God s Word includes singing and saying what we believe. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from A Brief Statement of Faith We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed,

6 claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY I Love You, O My God Most High David Hogan ( ) Summer Choir I love you, O my God most high, for first your love has captured me; I seek no other liberty: Bound by your love, I shall be free. All mine is yours: say but the word, say what you will it shall be done; I know your love, most holy one, I know you seek my good alone. May memory no thought suggest but shall to your pure glory tend, may understanding find no rest, except in you, its only end.

7 Apart from you, nothing can be, so grant me this, my only wish, to love you, Christ, eternally, you give me all in giving this. -St. Ignatius Loyola ( ), trans. Edward Caswall ( ) *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow LASST UNS ERFREUEN *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION BEARING THE WORD INTO THE WORLD *RECESSIONAL HYMN NO. 366 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling HYFRYDOL God blesses and sends us in mission to the world. 10 A Vocabulary of Faith 2018 Summer Worship Series First Presbyterian Church Burlington, North Carolina This summer we are offering a sermon series called A Vocabulary of Faith. Each week one of your pastors will focus on a word we often use in our life of faith. Often we use these theological words and really don t stop to consider what they really mean. We use them with the assumption that everyone knows what they mean and what the nuances are. Kathleen Norris, a best-selling poet and essayist, wrote a book a couple of decades ago now entitled, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith. In the preface she writes, When I began attending church again after 20 years away, I felt bombarded by the vocabulary of the Christian church. Words such as Christ, heresy, repentance and salvation seemed dauntingly abstract to me, even vaguely threatening.... For reasons I did not comprehend, church seemed a place I needed to be. But in order to inhabit it, to claim it as mine, I had to rebuild my religious vocabulary. The words had to become real to me, in an existential sense. We hope that in our summer worship you can rebuild your religious vocabulary with words that are real to you. June 24 Idolatry Dr. Ron Shive July 1 Hell Rev.
