THE SUNDAY FOLLOWING ALL SAINTS DAY S UNDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2017 First Presbyterian Church 508 West Davis Street Burlington, North Carolina

G ATHERING AROUND THE W ORD The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the Music for Preparation as a time of prayer and meditation. Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us prepare our hearts to worship God. MUSIC FOR PREPARATION Suite for Oboe, Cello and Harp Vincent Kennedy (b. 1962) Dance Prelude CALL TO WORSHIP Hebrews 12:1,2 Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. We lay before God our own sins, the sins and brokenness of our fellow worshipers, the church universal, and the world. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 366 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling *CALL TO CONFESSION *CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. We confess that we are indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, that joined with those from ages past, who have served you with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom you promised in Jesus Christ. HYFRYDOL *SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie eleison) adapted by Richard Proulx *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Glory Be to the Father (Gloria Patri) OLD SCOTTISH CHANT The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God. *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. We exchange reconciling words and gestures among the people of God. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION LISTENING FOR THE WORD PSALTER READING: Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

NEW TESTAMENT READING: Revelation 7:9-17 Large Print Pew Bible, page 303 Pew Bible, pages The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. REQUIEM John Rutter (b. 1945) The Chancel Choir Patty Philipps, soprano I. Requiem aeternam Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion: et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. -from Missa pro defunctis Grant them rest eternal, Lord our God, we pray to thee: and light perpetual shine upon them for ever. Thou, Lord, art worshipped in Sion; thy praises shall ever be sung in all Jerusalem. O hear us; O Lord, hear thy faithful servants prayer; to thee shall all moral flesh return. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. II. Out of the deep Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. O let thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint. If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss: O Lord, who may abide it? For there is mercy with thee: therefore shalt thou be feared. I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him: in his word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the Lord; before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch. O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel: from all his sins. -Psalm 130 III. Pie Jesu Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Pie Jesu domine, dona eis sempiternam requiem. -from Dies Irae, Missa pro defunctis Blessed Jesus, Lord I pray in thy mercy grant them rest. Lord our God, we pray thee, grant them everlasting rest.

IV. Sanctus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. -Missa pro defunctis Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and majesty. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord our God: Hosanna in the highest. V. Agnus Dei Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: in thy mercy, grant them rest.. Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery. He cometh up, and is cut down like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succor? Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. -Latin text from Missa pro defunctis; English texts from the Burial Service, 1662 Book of Common Prayer VI. The Lord is my shepherd The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table for me against them that trouble me: thou has anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. -Psalm 23

VII. Lux aeterna I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labours: even so saith the Spirit. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine; cum sanctis tuis in aeternaum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Light eternal shine upon them, Lord, we pray: with saints and angels ever dwelling, for thy mercy s sake, may they rest in peace. Grant them rest eternal, Lord our God, we pray to thee: and light perpetual shine on them for ever. -English text from the Burial Service (slightly altered); Latin text, Missa pro defunctis. RESPONDING TO THE WORD *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from The Confession of 1967 We believe that in Jesus of Nazareth, true humanity was realized once for all. Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, lived among his own people and shared human needs, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He expressed the love of God in word and deed and became a brother to all kinds of sinful people. In giving himself for them, he took upon himself the judgment under which all people stand convicted. We believe that God raised him from the dead, vindicating him as Messiah and Lord. The victim of sin became victor, and won the victory over sin and death for all.

If you give monthly, quarterly, annually; or through stocks, credit cards, or e-giving, you may still participate in the offering ritual by placing this card in the offering plate. If you are interested in giving electronically through our secure e-giving process, you will find instructions on the back side of this card. LOCAL MISSION ORNAMENT SALE: Some of our FPC artisans have donated their creativity and their and time to lovingly produce some beautiful ornaments that will be on sale this Advent season. Minimum prices will be set, and donations beyond the cost of the item will be gladly taken for the benefit of our Local Missions. Any questions? Contact Rev. Lindsay Conrad (lconrad@fpcburlington.org) or Cathy Dusenberry. ( cathydusenberry@gmail.com). We hope to see you at the table! 2018 STEWARDSHIP: Generous giving makes it possible for First Presbyterian Church to fulfill our mission to worship God, care for one another, nurture our children and youth, share the love of Christ with others, and support the many outreach ministries of this congregation. Every gift matters. No one gift is too small to matter. Making a pledge is important for another reason. It not only helps our officers be good stewards of our resources, but it has a profound spiritual impact on our lives. Giving enlarges our lives and our hearts; giving allows the goodness of God to flow through us; giving awakens us to a rich harvest of thanksgiving. If you have not yet made your 2018 pledge, please join your fellow church members by doing so today. Pledge cards are available in your pew rack and you can simply put it the offering plate.
