G ATHERING AROUND THE W ORD WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us prepare our hearts to worship God. MUSIC FOR PREPARATION Canon Johann Pachelbel ( ) (8:30) Veronica Allen, violin (11:00) Carillon Choir Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. CALL TO WORSHIP To you, O Lord, we lift up our lives. O God, we place our trust in you. Make us to know your ways, O Lord; show us your path. Lead us and teach us, for you are the God of salvation. For you we will wait all the day long. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 307 God of Grace and God of Glory *CALL TO CONFESSION CWM RHONDDA We lay before God our own sins, the sins and brokenness of our fellow worshipers, the church universal, and the world. *CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, we confess that we have strayed from your path. We have deceived ourselves and pursued our own selfish desires. We have pushed you and others aside, forgetting to love. We have forgotten who we are and whose we are. Have mercy on us. Help us to find your way once more; to reclaim the path of truth, love, and justice. Help us to resist the temptations of this world and grant us patience to wait for the realization of your eternal and heavenly kingdom. *SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive DETROIT
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Glory Be to the Father (Gloria Patri) OLD SCOTTISH CHANT The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God. *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE, AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. LISTENING FOR THE WORD A TIME WITH THE CHILDREN (11:00) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 25:1-10 Refrain and Tone: Presbyterian 8 We exchange reconciling words among the people of God. During this season of illness, rather than shaking hands we invite you to greet each other with the words, The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. NEW TESTAMENT READING: James 1:12-16 Large Print Pew Bible, pages Pew Bible, page 229 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM (11:00) Acclamation in G Minor Karen Thompson (b. 1956) Carillon Choir GOSPEL READING: Mark 1:9-15 Large Print Pew Bible, page 42 Pew Bible, pages The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon. SERMON: Where the Wild Things Are? Rev. Taylor Barner
RESPONDING TO THE WORD *HYMN OF RESPONSE NO. 215 What Wondrous Love Is This WONDROUS LOVE *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from The Confession of 1967 In Jesus of Nazareth true humanity was realized once for all. Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, lived among his own people and shared their needs, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He expressed the love of God in word and deed and became a brother to all kinds of sinful people. But his complete obedience led him into conflict with his people. His life and teaching judged their goodness, religious aspirations, and national hopes. Many rejected him and demanded his death. In giving himself freely for them, he took upon himself the judgment under which all stand convicted. God raised him from the dead, vindicating him as Messiah and Lord. The victim of sin became victor, and won the victory over sin and death for all. MOMENT FOR MISSION: Zambia Mission Team Courtney Jones PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE LORD S PRAYER Glory to God, The Presbyterian Hymnal, page 35 OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY A Lenten Prayer David Ashley White (b. 1944) Veronica Allen, violin (8:30) Nan Wooten, alto (11:00) Chancel Choir Restore in us, O God, the splendor of your love; renew your image in our hearts, and all our sins remove. O Spirit, wake in us the wonder of your power; from fruitless fear unfurl our lives like springtime bud and flower. Bring us, O Christ, to share the fullness of your joy; baptize us in the risen life that death cannot destroy. Three-personed God, fulfill the promise of your grace, that we, when all our searching ends, may see you face to face. -Carl P. Daw, Jr. (1989) *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow OLD HUNDREDTH

ANNOUNCEMENTS A WARM AND CORDIAL WELCOME is extended to all who worship with us this Sunday. We hope in this service you will encounter the living Christ and experience the warmth of our caring family of faith. Please take a moment to sign our friendship register when it is passed to you. If you are visiting with us and in search of a church home, we invite you to become a part of our church family here at First Presbyterian Church. Please let us know of your interest by way of the friendship register, or by speaking to one of our ministers. LARGE PRINT HYMNS: Copies of today s hymns are available in the Narthex. HEARING ASSISTANCE: If you need hearing assistance, units with headphones are available in the narthex from the ushers. LIVE VIDEO STREAMING: The Sunday morning worship service can be seen live from anywhere you have an internet connection. Click on the Live Streaming box at the bottom of the website home page ( WORSHIP SERVICE CDS AVAILABLE EACH WEEK: Each Sunday, the Scripture readings, anthem, and sermon will be recorded on CD and a limited number of copies will be available immediately after worship in the narthex. Additional copies can be requested by calling the church office. This same recording will be posted on the website. BULLETIN COVER: Christ in the Wilderness (1898), Briton Riviere ( ) NARTHEX FLOWERS are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Donaldine Pringle by her family. IN THIS SEASON OF LENT, YOU MAY NOTE THESE: The musical response to the confession, Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive, is taken from Hymn No During this season, it is our practice to remove alleluias from worship (they will reappear on Easter Sunday). The Doxology (response to the offering) will be sung to the tune OLD HUNDREDTH. In addition, a Psalm appointed for the day will be sung. These psalm settings may be responsorial, that is between a cantor and the congregation, choral (sung only by the choir), or metrical, as in the form of a hymn. Also, no closing voluntaries will be offered. Finally, it will be noticed that floral arrangements will not be used in the Chancel during Lent, but rather arrangements of bare branches, which offer us a stark reminder that Lent is a season of penitence and reflection. NURSERY CARE PROVIDED: Each Sunday nursery services are available from 8:30 a.m. until noon for children from birth through Pre-K age. Children are welcomed to Room 101. Children Kindergarten age and older are invited to worship. Nursey is staffed by childcare professionals with extensive child care experience, background checks and Child and Infant CPR training. Pagers are given to all guardians for immediate access during worship or Sunday School as needed. Please ask an usher or Church Educator for more information. WELCOME-TO-WORSHIP ACTIVITY TOTE BAGS containing worship bulletins, pencils, crayons, children s Bibles, and other activities for preschoolers and elementary children are available on the tree in the narthex located at the main Davis Street entrance. Blue bags are for children 2 nd grade and younger. Red bags are for children 3 rd grade and older. The worship bulletins found in the blue and red tote bags have been specially prepared for each age group. Please return the tote bags to the tree following worship. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN S WINTER LUNCHEON: Please plan to attend the Winter Luncheon tomorrow. We will meet with two representatives of the Days for Girls organization at 11:00 a.m. to learn how to help girls and women around the world. Lunch will be held at noon. You do not have to be a member of a PW Circle to attend. JORDAN, ISRAEL, AND PALESTINE TRIP: A group of members of First Presbyterian Church, led by Dr. Ron Shive, departed this Saturday, February 17, for a two-week trip to Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. This will be a time for spiritual pilgrimage to many Old and New Testament sites, but also an opportunity to meet and have meals with Palestinian Christian partners in the region. Please remember them in your prayers that this will be an engaging and eye-opening trip for all. Regular posts will be made on our church Facebook page. (If you are interested, a similar trip is being planned for February 16 March 2, 2019.)
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: The Session has called a congregational meeting for Sunday, March 11, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service. There are two purposes for the meeting: 1.
