BAPTISM OF OUR LORD SUNDAY, JANUARY 7, 2018 First Presbyterian Church 508 West Davis Street Burlington, North Carolina
The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the Music for Preparation as a time of prayer and meditation. Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. G ATHERING AROUND THE W ORD WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us now prepare our hearts to worship God. MUSIC FOR PREPARATION Of the Father s Love Begotten Gerald Near (b. 1942) Text and tune found at Hymn No. 108 CALL TO WORSHIP Just as the body is one 1 Cor. 12:12-13, 17 and has many members and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. God has told you what is good: Micah 6:8 and what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN No. 409 God Is Here! ABBOT S LEIGH CALL TO CONFESSION We lay before God our own sins, the sins and brokenness of our fellow worshipers, the church universal, and the world. CONFESSION OF SIN Sovereign God, in baptism you called us to turn from sin and to turn to Jesus Christ; but we stray from his ways and do not heed your call. Silence. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you joined us to Christ in his death that we might be raised with Christ in new life; but we cherish old ways and fail to embrace the risen life of righteousness, justice, and love. Silence.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you united us with all the baptized who confess your name; but we foster division in the church. We refuse to live as one people, and so fail to witness to your reconciling love before the world. Silence. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you call us to ministry in all realms of life, but we refuse the struggle to know your will; we do not nurture the ways of peace; we allow enmity and hatred to grow among us, putting neighbor against neighbor, and nation against nation. We abuse the earth you entrust to our care, and live in discord with all you have made. Silence. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you sent us to serve with compassion all for whom Christ died; but we ignore the suffering of the oppressed and the plight of the poor. We take bread from the hungry, and will not listen to cries for justice. Silence. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you gave us the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us, but we rely on ourselves, and refuse to trust your direction. We spurn your eternal wisdom, preferring the luring ways of the world. Silence.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us. Remember the promises you made to us in our baptism, forgive our sinful ways and heal our brokenness. Set us free from all that enslaves us, and raise us to new life in Jesus Christ, that we may be your faithful servants, showing forth your healing love to the world, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Glory Be to the Father OLD SCOTTISH CHANT The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God. We exchange reconciling words and gestures among the people of God. We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon.. *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE, AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. LISTENING FOR THE WORD A TIME WITH CHILDREN (11:00) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION GOSPEL READING: Mark 1:4-11 Large Print Pew Bible, page 42 Pew Bible, pages The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON: Living Like a Marked Person Ron Shive
*PROFESSION OF FAITH With the whole church, let us confess our faith. RESPONDING TO THE WORD Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Apostles Creed Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Eternal and gracious God with you and the Holy Spirit, be all glory and honor, now and forever. Amen. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (11:00) Cathy Dusenberry and Bruce Shields, Elders Brian Stokes and Stephanie Gibson 1. Who is your Lord and Savior? 2. Relying on God s grace, do you promise to live the Christian faith and teach that faith to your children? 3.Do you intend your children to be Christ s disciple, to obey his word and show his love? 4.Do you promise through prayer and example, to support and encourage Lexi and Savannah to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ? PRESENTATION QUESTIONS TO THE PARENTS In Holy Baptism the Spirit calls us and joins us together as the people of God.
QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION 1. Do you, the members of First Presbyterian Church, in the name of the whole church of Christ, undertake with Brian and Stephanie the Christian nurture of Lexi and Savannah, so that in due time they may confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior? 2. Will you endeavor by your example and fellowship to strengthen their family ties with the household of God? QUESTIONS TO THE CHILDREN 1. Will you be a friend to Lexi and Savannah? 2. Will you let them know that they are welcome here? 3. If they get lost, will you show them the way? 4. Will you share the stories and love of Jesus with them? THE ACT OF BAPTIZING INTRODUCTION OF LEXI ANNE AND SAVANNAH LYNN TO THE FAMILY OF FAITH PRAYER WELCOME AND CHARGE TO THE CONGREGATION Lexi and Savannah are now received into the one holy catholic church through baptism. God has made them members of the household of God, to share with us in the priesthood of Christ. I charge you to love them and to encourage them to be faithful disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. With joy and thankfulness we welcome Lexi and Savannah into Christ s church, for we are all one in Christ. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Child of Blessing, Child of Promise STUTTGART All are invited forward to touch the water and take a pearl from the baptismal font as a reminder of your baptism. REAFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM (8:30 AND 11:00) RECEIVING A REMINDER OF YOUR BAPTISM *HYMN OF RESPONSE NO. 482 Baptized in Water PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE BUNESSAN THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. ACTS OF GIVING AND RECEIVING MOMENT FOR MISSION: Andrews Elementary Nan Perkins OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY Of the Father s Love Begotten Plainsong Of the Father s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega; he the source, the ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore! By his Word was all created; he commanded; it was done: heaven and earth and depths of ocean, universe of three in one, all that sees the moon s soft shining, all that breathes beneath the sun, evermore and evermore! O, that birth forever blessed when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race, and the babe, the world s Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore! This is he whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord, whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word. Now he shines, the long-expected. Let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore! O ye heights of heaven, adore him. Angel hosts, his praises sing. Powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King. Let no tongue on earth be silent; every voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore! Christ, to thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be. Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory, evermore and evermore! Amen. -Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, 5 th century

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN S CIRCLE #2 will meet on Monday, January 8 at the home of Jean Schwegmann STEWARDSHIP: Generous giving makes it possible for First Presbyterian Church to fulfill our mission to worship God, care for one another, nurture our children and youth, share the love of Christ with others, and support the many outreach ministries of this congregation. Every gift matters. No one gift is too small to matter. Making a pledge is important for another reason. It not only helps our officers be good stewards of our resources, but it has a profound spiritual impact on our lives. Giving enlarges our lives and our hearts; giving allows the goodness of God to flow through us; giving awakens us to a rich harvest of thanksgiving. If you have not yet made your 2018 pledge, please join your fellow church members by doing so today. Pledge cards are available in your pew rack and you can simply put it the offering plate. THE VISIONING COMMITTEE wants to hear from you! As the Visioning Committee seeks to discern God s will for the future of FPC Burlington, we ask that you gather with us to share your hopes and dreams for our congregation. At 5:00 p.m. on January 7 and January 14, you are invited to join us in the Witherspoon Room. We will break into small groups and enjoy refreshments, fellowship, and guided discussion.
