Fifth Sunday in Lent Sunday, March 13, 2016 First Presbyterian Church 508 West Davis Street Burlington, North Carolina 27215

This prayer is found in Prayers for Peace. This Lenten devotional contains prayers written and submitted by our very own FPC Elders Classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018! This hymntune will be sung at the end of this worship service. Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. Fifth Sunday in Lent Gathering around the Word Personal Prayer of Preparation: - from A Prayer for Peace submitted by Hal Bates Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi Lord, make me an instrument of peace, where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Welcome Voluntary: Voluntary on Jerusalem Andrew Unsworth (b. 1970) Text and tune found at Hymn No. 373 W. Thomas Jones, organ Call to Worship: We gather together in the name of the One who bids us come. We gather together to hear the words of the One who is love. We gather together to sing praises of the One who teaches peace. Come, let us worship! When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. *Processional Hymn No. 409: God Is Here! *Call to Confession abbot s leigh *Corporate Prayer of Confession: God of every people and nation, we confess that we have not lived as global citizens in your new realm of justice and peace. We build up dividing walls in the world. We contribute to division in the church. We ignore the suffering in distant nations and live in fear of our closest neighbors.

Forgive us, God of grace. Pour out your Spirit of peace upon us, break down the dividing walls among us, and raise us up to be a holy temple your temple of peace in the world built on the cornerstone of Jesus Christ, in whose holy name we pray. *Silent Prayer of Confession *Congregational Response: Lord, Have Mercy land of rest *Assurance of Pardon *Congregational Response: Gloria Patri old scottish chant *Passing the Peace, Love, and Joy of Christ to Others The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Announcements Prayer for Illumination Listening for the Word First Lesson: Genesis 2:4b-25

Anthem: Jesus Christ the Apple Tree Eleanor Daley (b. 1955) The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green; the trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel, by faith I know, but ne er can tell, the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought, I missed of all; but now I see tis found in Christ the apple tree I m weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest a while: under the shadow I will be, of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive, which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree. -Anonymous from the collection of Joshua Smith ( ) Second Lesson: Genesis 3:1-19 Anthem: Adam Lay Ybounden Richard R. Webster (b. 1952) Adam lay ybounden, Bounden in a bond; Four thousand winter Thought he not too long. A shoot will come from the stump of Jesse, From his roots a branch will bear fruit. The spirit of the Lord will rest on him. Blessed are you when people hate you, reject, you, exclude you, defame you, and persecute you, on account of the Son, the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy! Rejoice this day and sing! For surely your reward is great; a promised day we all await, the kingdom, God s kingdom, the kingdom of the Lord. Sixth Lesson: Luke 19:29-38 Anthem: Hosanna to the Son of David Tomás Luis de Victoria (c ) Hosanna filio David. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini, Hosanna in excelsis! 6 Anthem: O Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem Herbert Howells ( ) O pray for the peace of Jerusalem. They shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces. -Psalm 122: 6,7 Responding to the Word *Affirmation of Faith - The Belhar Confession (edited) We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe Christ's work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another. We share one faith, have one calling, are of one soul and one mind, have one God, are filled with one Spirit, are baptized with one baptism, eat of one bread and drink of one cup, confess one name, are obedient to one Lord, work for one cause, and share one hope. Together, we come to know the height and the breadth and the depth of the love of Christ; are built up to the stature of Christ, to the new humanity; know and bear one another's burdens, suffering with one another for the sake of righteousness; pray and serve God in this world. Prayers of the People Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Congregational Meeting: The Session has called a congregational meeting immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service this morning. Come and learn along with Mr. Townsend, Jingle, Sean, Heather, Molly and a host of other children!

Find the Alleluia! During the Lenten Workshop, children created Alleluia Crosses that they have hidden around the church campus. We hide Alleluias during Lent because it is a joyful word and we are in a penitential season. If you find an Alleluia, we encourage you to sign it and hide it. The children will search for the Alleluia on Easter and will be excited to see your signature. New Members: Are you ready to become a member of FPC? More wonderful people are officially joining the life and ministry of the FPC family on Sunday, April 3. If you are feeling called to make that commitment to our family of faith, please contact Rev. Lindsay Conrad at lconrad@fpcburlington.org or call the church office. The eleven o clock service is broadcast each week on both WPCM 920 AM and 95.1 FM Flower Donations: Easter lilies for use in the sanctuary on Easter Sunday (March 27) may be ordered as memorial or honorary flowers ($25 each).
