For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Advent Blue The use of deep blue for Advent shades the season with a hint of expectation and anticipation of the dawn of Christ, the church s hopefilled and faithful watch for the coming of Christ. Please join in reading aloud those parts of the service printed in bold. S ECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT S UNDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2017 G ATHERING AROUND THE W ORD WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Liz Sherer and Peggy Harrelson (8:30) Dave and Kelly Dicke (11:00) We light these candles as a symbol of the hope we have in the promise of the Lord s coming. And he will be known as Mighty God, demonstrating in word and action God s unconditional and unlimited love for everyone. He will again show us that only love can drive out hate, only light can drive out darkness. Come, Lord Jesus, come! MUSIC FOR PREPARATION Magnificat (from The Nativity According to St. Luke) Randall Thompson ( ) Patty Philipps, soprano When this symbol (*) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. We lay before God our own sins, the sins and brokenness of our fellow worshipers, the church universal, and the world. CALL TO WORSHIP My soul magnifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. The Mighty One has done great things. Holy is God s name. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 347 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence *CALL TO CONFESSION *CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION God our Savior, we ask for mercy. Though we have heard Mary s song, we still seek security in pride and power and possessions. Though we know your story, we resist the costs of following you. We pass by those considered lowly in the world. We turn away for the hungry people who still wait to be filled. Forgive us, we pray. Help us to work for the justice you intend. Make us messengers of the peace you bring. As we wait for you, turn our apathy into acts of love and service. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel. *SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION PICARDY

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Lord, Have Mercy JEFFERSON *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Glory to God in the Highest (Gloria in Excelsis) GLORIA The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God. *PASSING THE PEACE, LOVE AND JOY OF CHRIST TO OTHERS The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. We exchange reconciling words and gestures among the people of God. LISTENING FOR THE WORD A TIME WITH THE CHILDREN (11:00) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT READING: Isaiah 9:2-7 Large Print Pew Bible, pages Pew Bible, page 638 The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

We listen for what God is saying to God s people through scripture, song, and sermon. ANTHEM (11:00) The Father s Love arr. William Roger Price (b. 1955) Chancel Choir Of the Father s love begotten ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the Source, the Ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore. Lo, how a rose e er blooming from tender stem hath sprung, of Jesse s lineage coming, as men of old have sung. It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half-spent was the night. This flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, dispels with glorious splendor the darkness every where. True man but very God; from sin and death he saves us and lightens every load. Isaiah twas foretold it. This is he whom heaven-taught singers sang of old with one accord, whom the Scriptures of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long-expected; let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore. GOSPEL READING: Luke 1:46-55 Large Print Pew Bible, pages Pew Bible, page 57 The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON: The Names of the Messiah Mighty God Dr. Ron Shive Our response to hearing God s Word includes singing and saying what we believe. RESPONDING TO THE WORD *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from A Brief Statement of Faith We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world.

God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. *HYMN OF RESPONSE NO. 86 The People Who Walked in Darkness ISAIAH 9 SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. who forever sing to the glory of your name: Lord s Supper During his ministry, Jesus shared meals as a sign of community and acceptance. As we gather for communion, know that you are welcome in this community and accepted at Christ s table. LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND DEDICATION

If you give monthly, quarterly, annually; or through stocks, credit cards, or e-giving, you may still participate in the offering ritual by placing this card in the offering plate. If you are interested in giving electronically through our secure e-giving process, you will find instructions on the back side of this card STEWARDSHIP: Generous giving makes it possible for First Presbyterian Church to fulfill our mission to worship God, care for one another, nurture our children and youth, share the love of Christ with others, and support the many outreach ministries of this congregation. Every gift matters. No one gift is too small to matter. Making a pledge is important for another reason. It not only helps our officers be good stewards of our resources, but it has a profound spiritual impact on our lives. Giving enlarges our lives and our hearts; giving allows the goodness of God to flow through us; giving awakens us to a rich harvest of thanksgiving. If you have not yet made your 2018 pledge, please join your fellow church members by doing so today. Pledge cards are available in your pew rack and you can simply put it the offering plate.

The Names of the Messiah an Advent Worship Series In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare asked the question, What s in a name? Both Shakespeare and you and I know the answer to that question. Our very being is tied up in our name. Our name is an indispensable part of who we are and whose we are. Often the naming of a child is the first stressful and hand-wringing decisions a parent must make. You want to get it right. In the 8th Century BCE, Isaiah described the coming of a new king, most likely Hezekiah calling him Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. In that day, often times people described their kings with divine-like qualities. While we need to hear these words first in their original contexts, Christians have seen these names reflect our Messiah, our Savior, whose coming we anticipate in Advent and whose birth we celebrate during Christmas. Each week of Advent our worship will focus on one of Isaiah s four names for the Messiah.
