Acts 20:28 As we celebrate our Homecoming, let it be a reminder of how Westwood United Methodist Church has been a blessing to us throughout the years. Of all the wonderful fellowships and the relationships we ve established, of all the many ways we ve grown through its ministries and its people, and of the ways it has challenged, encouraged, and supported us. Inside: Worship Grow Serve A Church Garden, p. 2 Let Homecoming be a reminder of our responsibility to each other, as the flock which God has drawn to this wonderful church. As God s church, we are called to love and accept one another, without prejudice. Let us show that same love and acceptance to those in our community, as we seek to serve them. And most of all, let our Homecoming be a reminder of the sacrifice Christ made for His church. It was His sacrifice which gives us something to celebrate on this special day in the life of Westwood United Methodist Church. May we all be shepherds of the church of God and pray constantly for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has given us. 3 SPORTS CAMP MEMORIES Messages of Hope at Westwood United Methodist Church 3 Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; Through the storm, through the night, Lead me on to the light: Thomas A. Dorsey 8:30 AM Communion Service, Chapel 9:30 AM Traditional Service, Sanctuary 10:00 AM New Covenant, Chapel 11:00 AM The Modern Service, Philippians 4:11-13 NKJV 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I recently spoke with a fellow musician who plays for another church. What he told me made my jaw drop. He said that he wasn t very good because he had no formal training on his particular instrument. The reason I was so shocked was not because of his lack of training but rather the fact that he plays so well by ear that one does not care whether he does or doesn t have training. Playing by ear or sight-reading is often a point of contention in music. This man has a family and a full-time job and still volunteers his time for his local church. Somewhere along the way he decided that his sacrifice was not good enough because he lacked training. The funny thing is that most contemporary band musicians do not read music. I believe that both have their place. There is also a good number of musicians who can do both. Regardless of whether a person possesses one or both, without the Lord s hand on their ministry, it will be empty. Musicians need at least one of the two but without Christ as the center focus, it is pointless. KIDS MUSIC CAMP: CROSS COUNTRY He handed out gifts. to train all Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, till we are all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 (Msg) The children did an excellent job of performing the musical Cross Country on Sunday, August 12 at the 9:30 am. service. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped during Music Camp week. Your time, effort, and talents were invaluable to the success of the week and the musical. Special thanks goes to Cindy Grant, Gail Stewart and Dr. Chris McBride for organizing and coordinating the Music Camp week and the performance on Sunday. The children reminded everyone of how obedience, courage, love, trust and faith can strengthen our relationship with God.
4 4 SUNDAY OCTOBER 7TH World Communion Sunday is October 7th. We will be having a combined one church service at 10:00 am with our New Covenant brothers and sisters. World Communion Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to have a combined worship service and celebrate what it truly means to be the hands and feet, voice and heart of Jesus Christ. To come together as the full body of Christ celebrating what makes us one as well as different. We have great plans for the worship service as well as for the time of fellowship after the service. Stay tuned for details about this great service. Bottom line the key word is fellowship! I ve added some great information from an article about World Communion Sunday. Most of us have heard about World Communion Sunday but may not know much about where the celebration originated. According to the website of the National Council of Churches, World Communion Sunday began in 1936 in the Presbyterian Church and was adopted by the Federal Council of Churches (predecessor of the NCC) in Since then, the celebration has grown into an international ecumenical celebration of Christian unity. The key word for World Communion Sunday is communion, or unity. It is a day when we mark the almost universal Christian practice of breaking bread with one another. World Communion Sunday is a time for remembering that around the globe in different languages, with different traditions and customs, and in various forms of liturgy the Lord s Supper is celebrated throughout Christendom. At its best, therefore, World Communion Sunday serves two purposes: it is both a joyous and meaningful partaking in Jesus sacred meal with his friends and a mind-opening exposure to different Christian traditions from around the world. World Communion Sunday is on the Christian calendar for a reason: it can and should be a time of profound Christian unity, marked by our shared celebration of the Lord s Supper. Jesus instituted the first such meal, and World Communion Sunday is a helpful way in which Christ calls us back together to celebrate the liturgy in remembrance of me. excerpts from 13
5 12 2nd Mile Giving 5 Last month was a wonderful time of everyone sharing their gifts with My Neighbor s Place. Westwood First Presbyterian Church sponsored a free Health Fair on July 31. Neighbors had vision and hearing screenings, learned about healthy living, and received hygiene kits. A wonderful group of college students serve in the Mobile Health Fair Ministry which is a highlight every time they come. Our 2nd mile offering during SEPTEMBER goes to: INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK (IHN) WUMC hosts homeless families four times a year, for a week at a time. The families arrive at church around 5:30 pm. Each family has a private bedroom, which is housed in. They eat a hot dinner around 6:00 pm and then the children have a chance to play while the parents prepare bag lunches for the next day. The next morning the families have a quick breakfast and then are transported back to the Day Center which is located in Walnut Hills. The Day Center has laundry facilities, computers, telephones, lockers, a kitchen, and a play area for the children. A case worker assists families to help them find housing, jobs, education and social services in hopes of attaining a stable life. Classes are held on parenting, budgeting, and nutrition. Children attend their own school, if possible. Most families are successful, as about 80% find housing within about 28 days. How can you help? Volunteers are always needed for meals, playing with children, conversing with parents, and even staying overnight with IHN families. This would be a perfect opportunity for your whole family to experience service to help those less fortunate. Also, people are always needed behind the scenes for food donations, IHN set-up and take-down, and doing laundry consisting of bedding and towels that our guests used during the week. Anyone of any age may participate. No experience or travel is needed, just a willingness to help people. SEPTEMBER 30 OCTOBER 6 will be the next time our church hosts IHN families. To volunteer or if you have questions, contact: Sally , or Carol WUMC PRESCHOOL WUMC Preschool is kicking off the school year on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th! Classes are full and the teachers are gearing up for a great year! For more information about the classes and teachers see p. 10 LaRosa s Buddy Cards are on sale now for $ All proceeds go to WUMC Preschool. For our Thursday Night Dinner, we had a Girl Scout Troop host. They sang camp songs before the meal, served, and got to know our neighbor s eating together. Afterward, we By Sarah Beach had our first movie night, hosted by Larry Robinson, and everyone enjoyed The Shack. At the Community Outreach Team Leader end of the month we had our combined men and women s summer picnic. Each and every week we have faithful volunteers and neighbors who serve behind the scene for the Closet, the Food Pantry, and Breakfast. None of the ministry would be done without the generous financial gifts or sharing of food or clothing. Freely given and freely received is true at My Neighbor s Place, and I am constantly amazed at God s abundant economy. I am so thankful to every partner church, to each person who gives, and each person who walks in the door because God s love is present. MNP CALENDAR Tuesdays The Closet We open our doors at 8:30 am every Tuesday for folks to join us for coffee, donuts and fellowship before we start a short time of worship at 9:40. Thursdays The Cafe The Neighborhood Cafe opens at 9:00 a.m. to noon every Thursday. It is a time to enjoy the company of our neighbors, a cup of coffee and a hot breakfast. 7 P A G E 1 0 P A G E 7 The beginning of the school year is always a crazy but exciting time of the year at Westwood UMC Preschool! It is a time where we implement new ideas, make changes in the classroom and ensure we as a staff are on the same page. I am happy to report that all of our staff is returning for this coming school year! Throughout the school year, I will be highlighting different classes in our Chimes column. This will give everyone a chance to read about the goals, staff and some examples of activities of each class. Here is a brief overview of each class we offer at Westwood UMC Preschool: FRIDAY STARS: 10 children per class Age: 2 years old Day: Fridays Lead Teacher: Miss Nora Assistant Teacher: Miss Jessi TWINKLING STARS: 10 children per class Age: 2 ½ years old Days: Wednesdays and Thursdays Lead Teacher: Miss Nora Assistant Teacher: Miss Jessi By Beth Strawhun Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 An important part of being a church body is to bear one another s burdens and also share and rejoice in each other s joys. And so in this month s Prayer Corner, we will read about specific joys of breakthrough prayer from friends in our church family. BUTTERFLY IIs: 12 children per class Age: 3 years old Days: Mondays and Tuesdays Lead Teacher: Miss Pam Assistant Teacher: Mr. Joe BUTTERFLY IIIs: 14 children per class Age: 3 ½ years old Days: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays Lead Teacher: Miss Anita Assistant Teacher: Mr. Joe I was in pain with glossopharyngeal neuralgia (an artery lying on a nerve causing pain in my ear, head throat and tongue) off and on for 2 ½ years and then in constant pain for 5 months. Because of this I couldn t talk, eat, or cough without pain and had to miss church. This past February I underwent a gamma knife procedure and had to be placed in a frame around my head mounted with 4 screws, followed by radiation. I have now been without pain for 1 month!! I praise God for the neurosurgeon He led me to and for everyone s prayers at church. Valerie Heath BUMBLEBEES: 12 children per class Age: 4 years old Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays Lead Teacher: Miss Tracey Assistant Teacher: Miss Amy FROGS: 20 children per class Age: 4 ½ years old Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays Lead Teacher: Miss Stacey Assistant Teacher: Miss Laura FRIDAY ENRICHMENT: 20 children per class Age: 4 4 ½ years old (Bumblebees and Frogs) Day: Fridays Lead Teacher: Miss Stacey Assistant Teacher: Miss Laura ALLISON PHILLIPS WUMC Preschool Director In Sunday school one day, Stephen Rippey and I were discussing my brother. Stephen felt led by God to say he needed to come home, and we prayed that he would. Within one week, my brother found an apartment and moved back to Cincinnati. It was also answered prayer for Cheryl Wood who lived in the same duplex house. She had been praying over who would move next door to her. God is good! Pam Chaney First of all, I feel gratitude that I will be 70 in April and I recently experienced the first real health situation I ve ever had. It unfolded as a corner of vision abruptly disappeared. The Eye institute got me in immediately and put me through tests and I was initially diagnosed with temporal arteritis. They asked me come the next day (a Saturday) in order to see a neurological ophthalmologist that only worked there one Saturday a year! She ordered a specialized test and found an occlusion of a retinal artery. Then, I had to be admitted to the hospital due to being a stroke risk and had to undergo many evaluation tests which found plaque in the left carotid. However, on my way to the hospital I was prayed over and as they prayed, I immediately felt warmth behind my eye. I am doing very well with some minimal vision loss and actually can see better when looking up (which is like looking up more to the Lord and the heavens!). Roger Metcalf God is moving in wonderful ways throughout our congregation both individually and as a church as we seek Him. If you have an answer to a prayer you d like to share in next month s Prayer Corner, please contact Gail Stewart at gstewart806@gmail.com. You are ALWAYS welcome to stop by Westwood UMC Preschool and see what our students are learning!
