First an update on our youth ministry. We are rewriting a youth ministry philosophy that comes from the desire to do intentional youth outreach and multiple team members including parents and youth in ministry. Once this philosophy is approved then we will beginn a search. In the meantime, a very large THANK YOU goes to parents, Scott and Sarah Beach, Rev. David Lyell, Myke Hudson and Tom Jones as they fill in to keep the ministry going. Inside: Worship Grow Serve Preschool, p. 2 Worship, p. 3 Discipleship, p. 4 My Neighbor s Place, p. 5 Church Directory, p. 6 Staff Parish is hoping to increase the opportunities in the Children Ministry by making it an exciting place for our children and families. To do this we are looking into hiring of a part-time children s director. This job description is being studied by a team of folks called our Job Description Team. How s that for originality? They along with myself are reworking our total job descriptions to match our 2020 goals. Behind the scenes, we have launched a new curriculum resource that any person, small group, Sunday school class or group can use called Right Now Media which includes all sorts of teaching to encourage us all to grow in God s grace and purposes. Contact Pastor David for more information. By the time you receive this copy of the Chimes we will have had our fantastic neighborhood Block Party and I Love Westwood mission projects such as working with Westwood School, having an outreach cookout at McFarlan Apartments, blessing group with cookies, partnering with Cincinnati Urban Promise and prayer walk/ride around the area. Which brings me to another exciting event our Church Wide Prayer Retreat at the end of the month! Watch the Facebook page as well as bulletins for more information. Coming up this month as well we ll celebrate our mission work in Cincinnati, Haiti and at Edisto Island as team members share with us their insights and as we realize the global connection we have to the gospel of Jesus Christ. So pray for the church, all of us in ministry and in growth, that God is honored in all we do. 3 14 Dear WUMC Scholarship Committee, I just wanted to say a late Thank You for the scholarship monies awarded to me and for continuing to make my goals possible. An education has been one of the greatest gifts to have received. The support from WUMC over the years has been huge in helping me succeed. Thank you! God Bless, Aaron Cunningham Messages of Hope at Westwood United Methodist Church 8:30 AM Communion Service, Chapel 9:30 AM Traditional Service, Sanctuary 10:00 AM New Covenant, Chapel 11:00 AM The Modern Service, Epworth Hall Westwood United Methodist, Westwood School would like to truly THANK YOU for the very generous donation of backpacks and supplies! We are so grateful for you and all that you do for our school! Sincerely, Westwood School Is our church a praying church? You better believe it. At 5 months gestation, we were told of the possibility of our great granddaughter having surgery on her bladder at the time of her birth because of a blockage. We put her on the church prayer chain and mentioned her at many church gatherings. She decided to be born 5 weeks early, which had us all in prayer for 16 hours. At birth, she was declared a beautiful, healthy baby. Thank you church for your praying hearts! Pat McMullen For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 Jesus calls us to gather--in twos and threes, in dozens, in hundreds, and more-and promises to be in our midst whenever we do. I'm blessed to experience that presence multiple times each week as I lead and participate in our times of worship, and I'm thankful that the dedication to community at Westwood UMC is growing! Over the last couple of months, we've gathered for Kids' Music Camp, the Haiti Benefit Concert, our Block Party, the I Love Westwood weekend, and all sorts of other opportunities to share the Holy Spirit. My hope for the future is that our community of worship, growth, and service will continue to grow, and that all who participate in each of our weekly times of worship will see themselves as not just attendees, but belonging to a family whose members support each other in faith, hope, and love in the name of Jesus Christ. What new friends in Christ will we get to know throughout the coming months, through the Christmas season and into next year? Let's find out together. Making a joyful noise, Dr. Michael Kelly Director of Worship and Arts , ext. 113 mike@westwoodunitedmethodist.org 2nd Mile Giving Our 2nd mile offering during OCTOBER goes to: INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK (IHN) He handed out gifts. to train all Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, till we are all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 (Msg) The next WUMC hosting will be the week of NOVEMBER 27 DECEMBER 3 Please consider how you can help with this wonderful mission to help homeless parents and children. 4 P A G E 4 P A G E 1 3 COFFEE VIDEO FAMILY This month I have three different thoughts to share with you. Each is a growing ministry of our church and perhaps an area that you might have a passion for. Coffee Crew Jack Moore provided almost 30 years of Sunday morning hospitality for our congregation. Every Sunday he would prepare the Gym for our fellowship time after the 9:30 service. He would set out donuts, make the coffee and make sure everything was ready for a couple hundred people to enjoy conversation after worship. This summer we assembled the next generation of Sunday hospitality, affectionately named, Coffee Crew. We have developed a rotation for teams of two people to take over the duties each month. While we have reached a sustainable rotation, we would like to add at least two more teams of two people to add to the rotation. Especially if the 11:00 service is your primary service. If you love creating spaces for people to fellowship and are willing to do what it takes to make sure hospitality is taken care of on your Sunday, get in touch with me! Video Internship Over the last several years, video has become an integral part of our worship and communication at Westwood. As a professional photographer, it has been natural to take on the responsibility of creating video content for our church. Now I am looking to share my trade with one or two video interns. This would be a great exploratory step for someone who is looking at making video content creation a part of their career or hobby. Experience is not necessary, but passion for creativity and trainability are required. Again, get in touch with me! Family Worship David Lyell Associate Pastor ext. 106 david@westwoodunitedmethodist.org Our staff has been working hard to increase new membership at our church. The Lyell and the Beach families have contributed two new members to our congregation in the last two years and so we have developed a focus on family worship. We are working to make the new family experience even better during our Sunday worship. We have added new speakers to our Heritage Room for families with small children at the 9:30 service and we are experimenting with live video to Epworth League room for our 11:00 service. In the next month we will open up this second space for our 11:00 service as a place where mothers and fathers with young children can listen and watch the service live with everyone else in an atmosphere that is comfortable and appropriate for families. EXTENDED CONFLICT: 5 TIPS FOR OVERCOMING A STALEMATE by Drs Les and Leslie Parrott Inevitably, you and your spouse will run into issues you can t agree on that will lead to friction in your relationship. Instead of letting conflict simmer, unresolved where it will eventually burn up your relationship allow it to shed light. It s frustrating and painful to get locked in a stalemate with your spouse the one person you really don t want to disagree with. Here are 5 tips for overcoming an unresolved conflict in your marriage. DON T AVOID CONFLICT In the short run, it s very easy to avoid conflict. But long-term, it can be damaging so you can t ignore issues, especially if you ve reached a stalemate with your spouse. Ignoring conflict instead of addressing your disagreement head-on will create additional undercurrent issues in your marriage that might not have existed otherwise. Additionally, buried feelings have a high rate of resurrection and unfortunately, when they arise again, they re uglier than when we first felt them. You could unintentionally create a minefield for you and your spouse. Get your conflict issues out in the open, and put them on the table. This exchange with your spouse doesn t have to be loud, loaded or emotional; focus on having a relaxed and fully present conversation where you reveal that you have conflicting feelings over certain issues. RATE THE DEPTH OF YOUR DISAGREEMENT When you and your spouse can t see eye to eye on a certain issue, try using a rating system to rate how deeply you feel about whatever you re disagreeing on. You can rate items from 1-10 (least to most important) to give yourself an objective view of how invested each of you are in certain outcomes. Rating your issues will help keep you from checking out on each other when the going gets tough. Use our free Conflict Card for an easy way to rate the depth of your disagreement and the importance of the issues you re dealing with together. (See end of article). STEER CLEAR OF CRITICISM When hashing out a particular problem or disagreement, steer clear of making critical comments toward your spouse. Criticism can take an argument in a very damaging direction. We ve all felt it: someone throws a critical comment in our direction, and we immediately become defensive. Emotions are heightened all the more between spouses, and it can be too easy to hurt the person we re supposed to love the most. Instead of being critical, turn your critical comments into complaints. That may sound counterproductive, but it will actually help you keep the emphasis off your spouse, and put it back on you and your feelings. How you begin your statement makes all the difference. Focus on starting with an I statement. Instead of saying, You never pick up your dirty laundry. You re such a slob! you could try, When you don t pick up the laundry, I feel frustrated. How can we resolve this? Another useful tool to keep criticism at bay is the XYZ Formula. To use it, just follow this simple construct and make it applicable to your situation: In situation X, when you do Y, I feel Z. It s a great way to avoid criticizing your spouse and having to deal with hurt feelings in addition to the conflict or disagreement you re already working to resolve. PRACTICE EMPATHY Empathy is the capacity to put yourself in your spouse s shoes and it s SO crucial in marriage. Practicing empathy allows you to see the world from your spouse s perspective, and imagine living life in their skin. Feeling things from inside out will have a great impact on you, and in turn, your relationship with your spouse. We re all hard-wired differently; there s not one right or wrong way to do most things. We are who we are, and it can be difficult to accept this without being empathetic to one another. Being empathetic is risky behavior because it will change you. Once you ve learned to practice empathy, you won t be the same person you were. You ll be more accepting of others and in the case of this stalemate with your spouse, empathy could give you a deeper insight into your spouse s stance, and why they ve taken it. WORK TOWARD CLOSURE When you find yourselves on the other side of an extended, unresolved conflict (or sometimes, when you re right in the middle of it), you may find that you have many unresolved emotions to deal with. Burying these emotions will begin a new cycle of conflict, so it s important to handle these feelings head-on rather than suppressing them. Make a list of things you consider unfinished or unresolved, and work to get closure with your spouse. Do the necessary work to get internal closure for yourself, as well. Journaling is a great way to process your feelings until they re out. CONFLICT ISN T THE END It s important to learn that conflict isn t the end of your relationship. Once you move past the fear of conflict, you can begin to build confidence in your ability to face and overcome issues together. Conflict Card Scale I m not enthusiastic, but it s no big deal to me. I don t see it the way you do, but I may be wrong. I don t agree, but I can live with it. I don t agree, but I ll let you have your way. I don t agree and cannot remain silent on this. I do not approve and I need more time. I strongly disapprove and cannot go along with it. I will be so seriously upset I can t predict my reaction. No possible way! If you do, I quit! Over my dead body!

Psalm 105:1-4 By Sally Dessauer THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5:00 pm Join us for a Ethnic Potluck at Arlene Schwerin s home, 3316 Renfro Bring a food from another culture or country and your own drink. RSVP: Sally Dessauer or Arlene Schwerin As promised in last month s Prayer Corner article, I am including recent answers to prayer from members of our WUMC family. As the Psalmist wrote, let s praise the Lord together for the wonderful things that the Lord has done. At the end of August I was scheduled for stomach surgery. I feared that when I came home I would be a heavy burden on Suzi (my wife.) Many times I prayed that I not be a burden. Before my surgery a peace came over me. I am now home and am not a burden. As Dr. Lee says: Fear is a gift from God. It wakes you up. What will you choose? I chose to give it to God. He gave me peace. (One of my visitors, Ken Miller, gave me this funny. Many people want to serve God, but only in an advisory capacity. ) Jack Ensminger By Beth Strawhun Our daughter tried for 5 years to have another child but to no avail. She went to many doctors and specialists and finally went to a Chinese Acupuncturist who specialized in infertility. This doctor worked with her until she finally found out what was causing the infertility issue and was able to prescribe the right medicine. Chinese herbs, traditional medicine (or a mix of the two) along with the acupuncture treatments, I do not know what she used. One week before she and her husband were to start in vitro fertilization treatments (at a cost of $22,000 each), she found out she was PREGNANT! I truly believe that God put this Chinese doctor into her life at the exact time that she needed her! She is due with her baby son the end of January! Praise be to God! Carol Haskell I have been a volunteer for seven months at The Christ Hospital ER. I really enjoy the patients and staff. I even applied to the Christ College of Nursing and was thrilled that I got accepted. With much prayer and my sweet prayer partner (Beth Strawhun), I thought it was not the right time. My dad has been ill and I have a busy family. God led me to get my STNA and I had to take a three hour test to even get in the class. Well, I passed that and just this week I am back in school getting my certification. I plan to work in the ER. Praise be to God! Lori Coleman For four long years, I was running the rat race, working 60 to 70 hours each week. All that time, I was worshiping the false god of prosperity. I had applied for jobs but was repeatedly turned down. I knew that my age (63) contributed to my rejections. I prayed to God for forgiveness and begged for help. On a Sunday after working seven straight days, I became ill. I went to the doctor and he told me I was suffering from stress. He prescribed two weeks medical leave. In those two weeks, my wife and I received guidance from the Spirit to file for early retirement, find a health care plan, and find part time employment. The Lord gave me the courage to give notice to my employer. I am now starting a new life in Christ. I have discovered the joy of family again and have the time to serve the true God. Ed Rave Our daughter, for 7 or 8 years, has had a desmoid tumor that has caused her continuous pain. A year ago, at the MotherDaughter Banquet, we were discussing having the tumor, along with her right arm, removed just to lessen the pain. She had had enough. One of our Prayer Team members suddenly knelt beside her, put his hand on her shoulder and prayed silently. He then got up and walked away. Eight months later her CAT scan revealed no visible tumor. At her most recent oncologist visit, it was indicated that a small bit of the tumor was left in the scar tissue. She no longer has to rely on methadone to make her days and nights livable. Does God answer earnest prayer? I am a believer. Pat McMullen
