I am not saying that what we do isn t important but in light of Kingdom work: saving souls, people restored, each of us finding a deep relationship and calling of God, our young Inside: Worship Grow Serve Preschool News, p. 2 Worship, p. 3 Grow ~ Dicipleship, p. 4 people faithful to Jesus it takes more than hard work and dedication, it takes bended knees and faith filled prayer. Here is what I would like you to pray into these next few months: 1. That God will stir you and others He has moved to pray sincerely for revival in our lives. Revival is what we know we ought to be about loving Jesus, doing good and doing no harm. It shows itself in the actions of my above paragraph. 2. That each of us would bring a loved one, a friend we care about to church with us in the next 6 months. But before we do bring them we will have prayed for them, about them, over them for God s touch in their lives. A touch of love shown in you and from God. 3. That God would turn the hearts of our young people to him and the hearts of our older people to His will. 4. That we would expect God to get the glory from our work. Yes you can, the model is the Lord s Prayer a model of what goes into prayer. Don t worry what you say, just come to him in prayer expecting as Jesus said in Matthew 6 that the Father already knows what you are going to say, so relax and come in faith. Here at WUMC Preschool we strive to encourage a love of self, others and learning every day! The most important thing anyone can do for a child is to love them, and teach them about love. Children need to be shown love! Gestures of love towards them and towards others deeply influence children. It is our job to make children conscious of love, its importance and its power. Worship ~ Grow ~ Serve Children are our future. If they do not learn about love they will be unable to show it to others. It is the ability to love that connects us all. Love dwells in each and every one of us! He handed out gifts. to train ALL CHRISTIANS in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, till we are all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. I guess it could but it isn t, it comes from Lydia Istomina s book Bringing Hidden Things to Light, the Revival of Methodism in Russia (page 66). Methodists have always had three general rules of life: do no harm, do good, stay in love with God. What would have be different in this story had the revival been in your heart? Had the neighbors followed the three rules? What about in Westwood? Check out the yellow IHN brochure found in racks around the church or call Sally Dessauer or Lynn Hampshire Making a joyful noise, Dr. Michael Kelly Director of Worship and Arts , ext. 113 THE INDIFFERENCE OF ATTITUDE There is a story of a woman who was alone, fearful and growing feeble whose neighbors above her in her apartment building and below, next door to the right and the left and across the hall did not notice her more than a nod or two through a week. It seemed no one cared for her and so one day she switched off the electricity and increased the burner on her gas stove and lay down upon her coach to watch the flame. She lie down to die. It was months later that people began to ask about her and opening the door to her apartment they were horrified, not at what they witnessed but at the thought that their building could have exploded! Only later did they feel embarrassed that they thought first of themselves. at Arlene Schwerin s home, 3316 Renfro. Bring a sandwich or soup to share and your beverage. IHN volunteers have been doing a fantastic job caring for the homeless families that stay at our church: a week at a time, 5 times a year. Although we have had a few challenges, on the whole it has been an extremely positive experience for everyone. We re looking forward to another really positive year of helping people who need our good Christian love and caring. We need your help! Be an evening host, play with the children who beg for attention, or just talk to adults who need to express themselves. We need more people to stay overnight and send the families off on the bus early in the morning (you can be home by 7 am.). This year we do need more people to help...just a few hours, 2-5 times a year. "... an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace..." I realize that this quote doesn't come from scripture; actually, it originated centuries ago in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, and continues to be a beloved and widely recognized way to describe baptism and communion, the sacraments of the church. I believe that these words have a special resonance because they also point us toward an ideal for everything a church's congregation does: From the smallest maintenance tasks to the largest programs and presentations, we pray that everything we do is a sign to the world and to ourselves of Christ's amazing grace for all of us. Right now, I'm giving thanks for the many signs of grace we've seen in our Worship and Arts Ministry since the last issue of the Chimes was published: our Advent and Christmas celebrations; the worship offerings of Bright Spirits, our new children's choir; Bishop Palmer's inspirational visit; and our choirs' participation in Wesley Foundation's Choir Challenge. With these great experiences in our memories and with Lent on the way, it's fitting for us to meditate anew on God's grace, asking God how He wants Westwood UMC to proclaim His Good News in the months and years ahead. What to Do with Those Christmas Cards? Let the kids make up a story with the cover pictures. Frame 4 cards that tell the story of Christmas. 4 4 Access Westwood Online By David Lyell, Associate Pastor Do you misplace your church directory as often as I do? Well, this month, we are opening up our church database to all of our members. Once you sign up with me or one of the Grow team coordinators, you ll have access to some powerful features that will hopefully get you connected and keep you connected to the rhythm of our church. Below is what the homepage looks like. From here you can jump to several helpful portals. You ll be able to see church wide events on the calendar, the small groups that you are enrolled in, a search bar to find church members contact information, opportunities to volunteer at our church, and an up to date giving history for your family. The management and security of your personal data is of the utmost concern for us, so we are rolling out this system to each user as they contact us. You ll have a username and password assigned to you. We ve had several groups utilizing the small group attendance feature for a couple of months and it has made everyone s lives much simpler. The system will you a few minutes after your group wraps up their time together with a link to record attendance, you don t even have to think about it! This new system has a missional purpose as well. Friends outside the church will be able to view church events and growth groups and even request more information. I am very excited to begin utilizing Access Westwood ASAP. So please, if you are especially interested in jumping in early, contact me and we ll get you connected! Fun times at My Neighbor s Place Christmas Party Saturday, December 13th MY NEIGHBOR S PLACE FOOD PANTRY This past year at the My Neighbor s Place Food Pantry was a busy one. We are blessed to be able give out 2143 bags of groceries (plus extra choice items when we had them) that affected 4892 people. The team that helps do this tremendous job includes: Susan Curry, my right land lady who take charge any time she is needed. She runs the intake table each week. Patsy Higley, Lena Schott, Doris Quilligan, Helen Vath are the check in persons to greet all who come in. Bag packers Connie Wagner, Lou Rothhaas (for the first half of the year), Spike Farris and Earl Conklin keeps us ready with bags filled to hand out. Floor helpers Roger Lindle, Napoleon Bacon, and Scott Conklin help folks get additional items from the tables and keep things under control. This leaves me to keep inventory together, order and deliver things to the pantry, keep all the paperwork up to date and reports filed on time to the FreestoreFoodbank. Pick up of the canned goods at the Warehouse is handled by Susan and Rick Curry, Roger and Mary Sue Braun, and Dick and I. The pickup of food from Kroger Delhi is done by Ken Miller. But my favorite job is working the door when we open especially to greet those coming in. We are a good working team. Does that mean we don t need more help? Absolutely not. Got time? Come on over and offer some. MEET OUR NEW WUMC MEMBERS William Osei-Parker is a production operator and has three children. He attends New Covenant. Melinda Callahan is returning to WUMC. She sings in the choir. Elizabeth Oppong-Amoah is a nurses aid and the mother of 1 yr. old Emanuela. She is married to Emmanuel and they Mark and Renee Davies attend with New Covenant. Mark is a quality auditor and Renee works as a laboratory scientist. They have three children: Rachel, Michael and Linda-Renee who were recently baptized. Sinda Conliff has attended WUMC for a few years and has decided to make WUMC her home. Holly Miller was baptized recently, giving her life to Jesus. Linzee Bottoms is the mother of Karlee and the wife of Kris and was baptized and joined the church. Robin Lusby has been active at Westwood with IHN, helping children find fun while staying with us. She also serves on MNP Board. The items that we currently give in each packed bag are spaghetti and sauce; 4 cans vegetables; 2 cans fruits; 2 cans soup; a box of macaroni and cheese; tuna; pork and beans and cereal. These are purchased by us from the Freeestore Foodbank Warehouse weekly. Some frozen products are donated from Delhi Kroger twice a month and bread and canned goods from Aldi on Harrison Ave. once or twice a month. Anything other than the specific items above go on an extra table for clients to choose. Examples would be jelly, pudding, canned milk, boxes of crackers, peanut butter, toilet paper, etc. In November, the Congregation was involved in the In Gathering as a 2 nd Mile Govong. An amazing 2173 cans were brought to the church. I thank those from the Youth Group who helped deliver all those cans to My Neighbor s Place and sort them out to put away. I believe that there were outside groups helping in this collection to few who I could identify: Four Directions Yoga Studio; Dater Montessori Students; and AAA Workers on Glenway Ave. At the same time as the In Gathering, we were working with Union Savings Bank to provide some of our clients with a Thanksgiving Dinner. 160 family dinners were delivered either to their homes or to MNP for them to pickup. There are many generous donors from the Congregation that help fund the Pantry. We have also received generous monetary help over the last year from North Bend Yacht Club; Western Hills Service Organization; Women s Contemporary Club; and Westwood Woman s Club. 5 P A G E 8 P A G E 5 In Christ Alone We as the Church have but one hope, we have one single event in which all of our life hangs upon. We are an Easter people from beginning to end, from start to finish we have nothing but Easter. Our hope is laid upon the bloody shoulders of Christ and we bring nothing of merit in which to gain our own salvation but the sin that made it absolutely necessary. It is now the Tuesday after our trip to Winter Blitz and while we were there we sang a song that was written in It is written in the same style as the old hymns, it s called In Christ Alone. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones he came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied - For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. Ryan Crabb Director of Student Ministries Our God took on human form so that we could be healed from sin and absolved of our wrong doing! This is a very basic knowledge and orthodoxy of our faith but sometimes we pass it by with a simple glance at the power that the Father put in our hands through His son. You have been given the knowledge of salvation how do we use this power? We are all busy people running this way and that way and are over booked and pulled in a hundred different directions and that is if you do not have children. I cannot imagine what life would be like with children and trying to balance all of the expectations the world places on you! I can t say that I understand because I don t. What I can say is that the work Christ is going to do in your child s life will far outweigh what the world requests of you. By Sarah Beach Director of Children and Family Ministry to the Community & Church New Year, New Changes One of my favorite holidays is New Years! I love the concept of fresh starts and new beginning. Optimism abounds every January and there is something so freeing about letting go and saying goodbye to the year at the end of December. January 1st always feels like tangible grace; God breathing new life has already brought so many changes! Scott and I are expecting our first child in July and it is wonderful to be able to share this good news! Parenthood will certainly be a big adventure, but right now we are marveling in wonder at this tiny person God is forming. In January, I also began as at the part time Director of My Neighbor s Place. This ministry of hospitality, worship, and care for others has always been one of my favorite things about Westwood. I am honored to get to serve in a place where I so clearly see the Kingdom of God at work on earth, just like it is in heaven. I can t wait to see what God has in store, transformation happens when we love our neighbors as ourselves. I am so thankful for the work and leadership of Dan Argo and Don Clark as they have served as volunteer Directors of My Neighbor s Place over the past years. I m glad they are still planning on volunteering each week bringing their experience and wisdom. This past weekend I attended the Summit Retreat, as I am pursuing candidacy at an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church. Deacons are an order focusing on Word, Service, Justice, and Compassion, with the mission to be a bridge to the community and the church. Unlike Elders, they are not itinerant (moved by a Bishop), but choose where they serve. Please keep me in your prayers as I am beginning this journey. So God is doing a lot of new things in my life this year, and I cannot wait to see how he works in all of your lives in 2015! YOUTH ACTIVITY CALENDAR SATURDAY, JANUARY 31 Youth Upward Concession Stand / Sub-making: Arrive at 8:30 am. Lunch will be provided. Funds from sub sale are for The Alive Festival. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7 Meet at Shiloh UMC, 5261 Foley Rd. Cincinnati, OH. Arrive at 7 pm. Friday and leave at 5 pm. on Saturday. Kingdom Club: Every Wednesday from 7-8, Kids in K-5 th are invited to Kingdom Club! We have a fun time learning Bible Stories, playing in the gym or doing art projects! There is also a Mom s Bible Study that meets in the library at the same time! SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15 No Youth meeting SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22 Snow Tubing: Leave after the Journey Service and return around 5 pm. $25 includes lunch at Subway. FRIDAY, MAY 1 SATURDAY, MAY 2 Youth Leader Training Event: Meet at Montgomery Christian Church, Montgomery Rd., Cincinnati, OH at 6-10 pm. Training on Saturday goes from 8:30 am - 4 pm. SUNDAY, MAY 3 Club 56 meets the ZÜ Destination Unknown: On Saturday February 7 there will be a destination unknown from 4:00-5:30! Snow Tubing: On Sunday February 22 nd, there will be having a makeup date for snow tubing. We will meet right after church and should return around 5. The cost is $25 and includes lunch at Subway. Party! Club 56 Retreat: Mark your Calendars! The Club 56 Retreat will be March 14 th and 15 th at Hueston Woods State Park! We will be staying in cabins, swimming, hiking, eating lots of food, and learning more about God! Feel free to invite friends, but they must come to at least one Club 56 event or Sunday School before the retreat so we can meet them. The deadline to sign up is February 15 th so we have the right number of cabins. Sunday School: Every Sunday we have Sunday School at 9:30, and 11:00 for Preschoolers to 6 th grade! Come and learn more about Jesus and invite a friend! Vacation Bible School: We will be having Vacation Bible School June Mark your calendars because we are going to have a wonderful time together and you won t want to miss out!
