Who are you? Why do you do what you do? I don t know how you would answer this question but in a recent application process to the West Ohio Conference for applying for a placement at our church of a ministry intern, I took what Roger Lindle and Lori Schulte wrote of their understanding of our church s ministry and mission. These writings got me to wondering if all of us understand what we as a church are about. Read what they wrote: Roger Lindle: Westwood United Methodist Church embraces the stated mission of the United Methodist church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our primary focus is reaching out in our community as an example of God s love to provide a conduit for His transforming power to Westwood. Our disciple making process of Worship, Grow, and Serve begins by the provision of worship services at multiple times, locations, and styles throughout the week. We encourage spiritual growth through these worship services, as well as the promotion and support of multiple and varied small groups and learning opportunities. We continuously seek to engage people in a myriad of service/ministry opportunities which seek to love others while meeting their real needs - physical, spiritual, and relational. Ministries of providing food, clothing, shelter, and simply gathering with peers for fellowship are all part of what WUMC does on a continual basis. Lori Schulte: Westwood United Methodist Church is that church with the Big Heart, right in the heart of Westwood. It's where people come together and experience the life transforming Love of God through passionate Christian worship. It's where Christians grow their whole life long and people are called and equipped for life and mission through loving, encouraging, and nurturing Christian Friendships and Ministries. Westwood United Methodist Church, it's where you'll find passionate hearts glorifying God and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ by being His hands and feet out in the world. Worship ~ Grow ~ Serve Serve, p. 6 Children, p. 7 March in View, p. 8-9 Opportunities, p. 10 Fellowship p. 11 Youth, p. 12 My Neighbor s Place, p. 13 Activities, p. 14 Fellowship, p. 15 What did you see? What is missing? What do you feel? How do you live into the call Jesus has made upon each believer? What future do you envision? For me I see a passionate love for neighbor and desire to please the Father, applicable practices for a good life of worship, growth and service to one another and the community around us. It is good to be at Westwood United Methodist Church! Thanks Roger and Lori for stating it so well. Rev. Dr. Lee Strawhun is the senior pastor at Westwood United Methodist Church lee@westwoodunitedmethodist.org

I am sure we are all looking forward to the spring weather coming soon! The spring weather will provide us more opportunities to get outside with the children and play. Children need at least an hour of vigorous play per day. It helps to develop important thinking skills, reduces anxiety, and helps them to sleep and eat better. Being outside just inspires movement. So get out the bikes, balls, and outside activities. Play games, walk or just explore. Let us encourage the development of happy, healthy children! Out of that was born the mission, Shoulder to Shoulder, which provides dental procedures annually for those in Honduras in need of dental care. Refreshments will follow the meeting in the gym. The attendance for the February meeting, regardless of the ice and snow, was heart-warming. Let s keep growing by bringing a friend or inviting someone to this great group of ladies! People often lament that, in a society with the comforts and conveniences that ours provides, it is all too easy to become detached and self-satisfied, losing the sense of dependence on God that is key to our spiritual well-being. An excellent function that Lent serves is to remind us of our falling short, our mortality, our weakness in the grand scheme of things. It's not that we should take these ideas as reasons to be depressed about our condition; these ideas should make us joyful that we can rely on God, who is infinitely powerful and steadfast, to be united with us in all things. A less profound--but definitely good--thing about Lent is that, now that it's here, spring surely can't be far away. Holy week straddles the end of March and beginning of April this year, and will feature a Maundy Thursday service at WUMC on April 2 based on the seven last words of Christ, a community Good Friday service at Westwood First Presbyterian on April 3, and, of course, Easter celebrations on April 5 at WUMC. We hope you will bring family and friends to join us throughout this meaningful season, celebrating God's solution to the problems of this world: sending Jesus Christ to minister, teach, heal, die, and rise again, all for our sake. As we worship together, let us be united, both with Christ and with each other, loving Him and His people just as He loves us! UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Join us for fellowship, fun and food for anyone, any age, who lives alone. " or if we have been united with Him in a death like His, F we will certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His." Romans 6:5 He handed out gifts. to train all Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, till we are all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. Once you download and login to this app, you ll be able to access a digital directory of our church and an up to date attendance and everything has gone great. I am pleased to be able to open up the account creation process to the entire church. If you are interested in enrolling these new features of our church, please hop on over to and follow the link. If your name and match our database, you will be able to create your own account to access all these features. Once you have an account, please visit the iphone App Store or Google Play Store to download your app called Church Life. Our annual MNP Christmas Party was held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 in the gym at WUMC. At the party our neighbors were treated to a visit from Santa, Christmas music, temporary Christmas tattoos, stuffed animals, cookies and snacks. During the party 251 sets of gloves and hats/scarfs were given out along with 131 new toys. In addition 14 toys and 6 sets of gloves and hats were given to a family in need at the request of Westwood School. We were also able to supply Westwood School with 55 sets of hats and gloves for students in need. We continue to distribute as the need arises. All leftover toys, hats, gloves and financial donations will be stored for our 2015 Christmas Party. On behalf of the neighbors, volunteers and board of directors of MNP we would like to thank all who made this year s party a success, congregations of Westwood United Methodist Church, Westwood 1 st Presbyterian Church, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, St. James Episcopal Church, United Methodist Women, WFPC Mission Team, Westwood Works, Cheviot Westwood Kiwanis Club, Westside Running Club and all the individual who contributed. It would not be possible without your help. MNP would also like to thank Westwood Works for holding a coat and cold weather clothing drives to benefit MNP at their annual Deck the Hall tree lighting on November 30, winter coats and additional winter clothing was collected. As we begin 2015 a change has occurred at MNP. Sarah Beach has taking on the role of Director, replacing Dan and Don who had both decided that now was the time to step down from most of their duties. They will both continue as volunteers at MNP and look forward to working with Sarah. Sarah can be reached at or sarah@westwoodunitedmethodist.org Our hope and prayer behind this work is that our congregation will move towards a reality that many institutions and businesses have already obtained. That we are more connected and leverage the great technological opportunities before us. You re Invited! The Board of Ordained Ministry unanimously approved me to be ordained as an Elder at Annual Conference this year! West Ohio Annual Conference meets at Lakeside, which is right next door to Marblehead on Lake Erie. It s almost four hours away, but I will have a reception on June 9 th to celebrate my ordination following the ceremony at our cottage in Lakeside. More details to come; but I wanted to make sure you all knew you were welcome to celebrate with us! The next free WESTWOOD COMMUNITY DINNER will be 6:00 pm, THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2014 at MNP. Contact John Bennett, Jenny Partridge or the WUMC office to see how you can help with this fantastic mission. This dinner is open to all, so plan on stopping by for a great meal and wonderful conversation. A great way to keep up with the goings on at MNP is through our Facebook page.

5 P A G E 1 2 P A G E 5 Constant Crossroads It is amazing how often in the Church we are placed in the cross hairs of the world. In the last couple of weeks we have heard about the martyrdom of our brothers in Egypt and the race relations in America and our lack of response. We as the Church are always going to be the victim of undue blame, but it is not who we are. We are the solution or more accurately we are the tools for Christ s solution. Ryan Crabb Director of Student Ministries We cannot deny that we have at times in our history turned a blind eye to needs because of prejudice, laziness, or apathy but we are still called TODAY to be Christ s final solution in this world. We are the front line soldiers in the spiritual battle for people s souls, rights, and freedom. I am truly eager to see what Christ is going to do in our Church this lent and Easter! Learning for Life By Adam Luthman What do we believe? Who are we? How do we serve? Our next development series will help answer these questions where the we is the United Methodist Church. We ll learn from an organizational perspective about the basics of our Church faith, our Church structure, as well as the social principles & creed of our Church. Glen Schulte, Pastor Lee, and I will split these three topics, guide you to the specific information, and conclude with discussion groups on every other Wednesday April 15 - May 13 at 6:30pm in the Church parlor. No problem if you cannot attend one of the sessions, join us for what you can! Please contact the church office to register and plan to start right after Easter. JAM buckets will be at the ramp door, Eckel Hall door and elevator for your offering of seed packets during the five Sundays in March. Last summer your seed packets and contributions led to the creation of over 3,000 gardens across 19 counties in southeast Ohio. If each garden were to net just $200 worth of food the value of the project would come to $612,200. That s big! Trustees need you!!! Mark your calendars now!!! We will be raking up leaves, weeding and mulching all of the flower beds around the church on SATURDAY APRIL 11 starting at 8:00 am. and concluding with lunch at noon. Our rain date is April 25th. If you can handle a rake, wheelbarrow, shovel or hoe, we need you. We also take some of the yard waste to Kuliga Park, so if you happen to have a pick up truck available to help out, that would be great as well.

By Sarah Beach Director of Children and Family Ministry and My Neighbor s Place sarah@westwoodunitedmethodist.org The Faith of a Child He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said, Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. -Matthew 18:2-4 A few weeks ago in Kingdom Club, we were talking about the Lord s Prayer for our lesson. I was happy and pleasantly surprised every child in our class had already memorized our family prayer. We went through the prayer line by line asking the kids what it meant. When we got to Thy Kingdom Come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven I heard some great responses. One girl said, God is the King and one day we will get to be with him in heaven, where everyone will be happy and no one will be sick. Another child chimed in saying, We can experience heaven on earth. I do when I am at church learning about God because it is such a fun place! The last girl said, We can live like we are in heaven by being kind on earth. Each and everyone of these kids nailed it, and I was blessed to hear them sharing about their faith, especially how they live it out each day. Do you want to see your child s faith grow? Take time each evening to pray together, perhaps closing with the Lord s Prayer. Also, Kingdom Club is a great opportunity for your kid s faith to get stronger as we study the Bible and have fun together. There is also a Mom s Bible study at the same time, so you can sharpen your faith too! MARCH EVENTS God s Gym: Hopefully, in March there will be an open gym for students in K-6th grade to play basketball together and to have devotions. More information to come!
