1 THE MESSENGER S o u t h e r n h i l l s u n i t e d m e t h o d i s t c h u r c h n o v e m b e 4 r S E N I O R Pa s t o r w r i t e s... TEST SCORES Victoria Cowie you might want to remember that name she may be the all-time smartest person in the world. She is 11-years-old and lives in Shropshire, England. Her parents are teachers and they saw very soon that she was extraordinarily bright. She was reading elementary school books as a toddler. She recently was given an IQ test and scored 162! That surpasses 160 thought to belong to Albert Einstein, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking. Cowie is only 11-years-old and her IQ is above Einstein s IQ!! The real question becomes what do you do with what you have? She says she really enjoys science and doing experiments, but she also loves acting and dancing and playing musical instruments. She enjoys sports like swimming. She has already indicated that, My favorite subject is biology, and I want to be a vet when I m older because I love animals and I m not afraid of blood. What a tremendous opportunity lies before her. Of course, her parents also try to remind her that there are some rather routine responsibilities. They are teaching her how to clean up her room! Jesus said, Much is required from the person to whom much is given; much more is required from the person to whom much more is given. Luke 12:48 GN I don t know anyone with an IQ of 162, but I know some awfully smart people are reading this. The more God gives to you, the greater the responsibility to use it for kingdom work. This basic concept goes not only with our IQ but with our gifts, our talents, our financial capabilities (Commitment Sunday is November 13), our expertise, etc. This should cause us to reevaluate what we are really doing with what God has given us. It might be a good thing for each of us to ask a good friend to give us a test a test that might be more important than an IQ test to evaluate how well we are using all that God has given us. When evaluated about how much of a difference is my life making how high would I score? In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus told this truth in the parable of the talents: Every saint is to be a servant and a steward. Regardless of how many talents you have we are expected to invest them wisely and productively in kingdom work. Jesus said, To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who are unfaithful, even what little they have will be taken away. Matthew 25: 29 NLT Victoria Cowie has a huge blessing and responsibility in front of her. Each of us has an equal responsibility as what is expected of us is relative to what God has given to us. What s your score? Bill NOVEMBER SERMONS November 6: November 13: November 20- November 27- "Stay in Love with God" Luke 6:37-38 Commitment Sunday- "What Does the Lord Require of You?" FAMILIES OF FAITH ONE-DAY CONFERENCE Saturday, November 5, am 4pm First United Methodist Church 211 Washington Street, Frankfort, KY REGISTER AT: Join other parents, volunteers and church leaders for a FREE, 1-day mini-conference all about serving and becoming families of faith. Through an intergenerational worship service and sessions with experts Dr. Winfield Blevins, Rev. Room in the Inn Is Seeking Great Volunteers for Beginning Sunday, Oct. 23, Room in the Inn will have a table in the Education foyer to encourage Southern Hills and Christ Church UMC members to become a part of the volunteer wing of RITI to help with set-up, meals, overnight hosting, Sunday clean -up, laundry, and evening hosts for our 13th season. We provide Christian fellowship, a safe and warm place to sleep for the night, as well as supper, Sunday breakfast, and a sack lunch for up to 14 homeless male guests each Saturday night during the cold winter months ahead. From 5 p.m. Saturday to Sunday around 6:30 a.m., Dec. 3, 2016-March 11, 2017, our Activities Building doors will be open with preparations for our overnight guests. We would love to have as many of you as possible to help with this volunteer community commitment: from the financial expense for preparing, delivering, and/or serving a meal, to the time it takes to set up sleeping mattresses, towels, and bedding, to washing mattress pads at home and bringing them back to the church by the next Thursday, to transporting men from and back to downtown Lexington in our church van, to becoming a male supervisory overnight host, a Sunday clean-up committee member, or to being an evening host. This project is a wonderful way to serve the church and the community and to be a part of more than 20 Greater Lexington area churches who proudly offer these overnight services for more than weeks each winter season. Our booth will be signing up volunteers Sunday, Oct. 23- Sunday, Nov. 20 or you may call Bev Jaquith, (859) to select a specific date or position in which you would like to serve. Families, circles, small groups, scouts, youth groups, men s groups, and individuals are always welcome! We have spots for everyone! During part of this time, we will also be offering great holiday gifts of woodworking items (cutting boards and picture frames) for sale that our RITI guests have been making through the RITI 6 Treasures Ministry at Centenary United Methodist Church. Prices will range from $15- $40. Unfortunately, no credit cards will be accepted, just cash or checks. 2

LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLES Every year during the Advent season, families have been asked to participate in our Advent Candle Lighting Ceremony for our traditional worship services. This year, we are expanding the definition of family to include many of our small groups at Southern Hills. If you are a part of a small group, such as a Bible Study, UMW Circle, Bridge Club, etc., please talk to your group and volunteer to be a part of this special time of worship! It will be a wonderful way to celebrate the coming of the Christ Child with your family! GOD'S PANTRY THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE IN NOVEMBER! During the month of November, the familiar Blue Barrels will be set out for the God's PantryThanksgiving Food Drive. The mission we share together is to reduce hunger in Central and Eastern Kentucky through community cooperation, making the best possible use of all available resources. Each year, God's Pantry distributes over 23 million meals to people who struggle with hunger. 1 in 6 people have food security issues in our service area. All food- canned, boxed and bottled (no glass) will be gratefully received. As an alternative way to help, you can write a check to Southern Hills and write "God's Pantry" in the notation blank. Thank you! LASAGNA COOK-OFF HERE S YOUR CHANCE! November 30, 2016 for our Wednesday Night Recharge Meal Our trusty chef will be out of town on November 30th and will not be able to prepare our Wednesday night meal. Join us for a LASAGNA COOK-OFF! Make your best lasagna recipe and bring it to share! Join us for fellowship around the tables and a night of fun competition. Look in future bulletins for a sign up sheet so that we know how many plan to bring a dish! 4
5 SPIRITUALITY AND MENTAL HEALTH (Sponsored by Southern Hill s Mental Health Ministry) As Christians, we re often taught that mental illness and spirituality don t reside in the same body. Those that struggle with stress, depression, worry, and anxiety feel guilty that our faith doesn t totally fix these feelings. Join us on November 9, 2016 in the Bonus Room following the Fellowship Dinner from 6:30 7:30 as we discuss spirituality and mental health. Our speaker and facilitator will be Michael Sibley, Chaplain at Eastern State Hospital. Dear Rev. Moore, We want to express our great appreciation for Southern Hills UMC s partnership with us in bringing hope and healing to hurting children throughout Kentucky. Your sponsorship of our Golf Scramble for the Children helped us raise money and awareness to support our mission. Because of sponsors like you, this year s event was one of the best ever! Melinda Ryles-Smith, Randy Coy and Casey Neely Dear Friends at Southern Hills UMC, Many blessings to all of you who support the Morehead State University Wesley Foundation with your thoughts and prayers, as well as your financial contribution of $2,000! We have witnessed two students commit their lives to Jesus Christ already this semester (a first-time commitment, and a re-dedication) as well as two other students receive a call to vocational ministry. Glory to God! THANKS for your generosity toward this ministry! Rev. Drew McNeill Campus Minister Dear Southern Hills, Thank you for your generous donation of $3,530, made to the Wesley Foundation at the University of Kentucky for our new roof! We are grateful for you! Your prayers, service, and financial support provide the resources which make it possible for the Wesley Foundation to advance its mission to connect, develop, and send a new generation of Christian leaders who will make disciples of Jesus Christ and transform the world. Rev. William Herndon Director/Campus Pastor ANNUAL CHARGE CONFERENCE and THANKSGIVING DINNER November 20, 2016 On Sunday November 20, 2016 Rev. James Williams, Lexington District Superintendent, will be with us for SHUMC s annual Charge Conference at 6:30 p.m. Prior to this evening of worship together we will serve our yearly thanksgiving dinner. PLEASE NOTE:: To make serving more efficient this year we you will be able to make reservations for one of two settings. There will be a 5:00 p.m. seating, and then a 5:45 p.m. seating. Please pay attention to future bulletins for your opportunity to make a reservation for one of these meal times. 5
6 FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE - RICK ARNOLD FINANCIAL CONDITION We continue to operate slightly below our break-even point at a negative $19,000. Most of this can be attributed to our early childhood center. Everyone should have received their September 30 th giving statements and you should be receiving your 2017pledge cards soon. I still encourage everyone to use the electronic withdrawal. It is the simplest and easiest way to donate money to the church. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me in the business office. CURRENT INCOME / EXPENSE OCTOBER 19, 2016 Income (in thousands) % Budgeted SHECP 1, Contributions Other Income Total Income 2, Expenses SHECP 1, Capital Property Personnel Administrative Education & Worship Leisure & Outreach Total Expenses 2, Balance (19) UPWARD COACHES AND REFEREES Our 8 TH season of Upward basketball (and 7 th season of cheerleading) will be here before we know it. To emphasize again, you don t have to be an expert in anything to be a part of this ministry. We are also in need of concession stand volunteers to help throughout the games. As our league grows, we need more and more volunteers. If you need training we will be happy to train you! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Brian Cathey at rbcathey@southernhillsumc.org, or call Thanks in advance for all of your help and support. 6
