1 THE MESSENGER S o u t h e r n h i l l s u n i t e d m e t h o d i s t c h u r c h j u n e / j u l y S E N I O R Pa s t o r w r i t e s... A NEW WAY OF WORKING After some months of careful work, a Strategic Plan or MAP (Ministry Action Plan) has emerged and been approved at Southern Hills. New teams have been forming in the areas of Connect, Grow, Serve, and Worship and leaders have been secured. These teams are charged with assessing what we do well, how we might do things better in all areas, and proposing what new things we need to do to achieve our mission of Building True Reflections of God s Amazing Love. A new, streamlined Administrative Team has formed which includes the required church committees under the United Methodist structure: Staff-Parish Relations, Finance, Trustees, and Lay Leadership. The Chairs of these committees, along with the Connect/ Grow/ Serve/ Worship Chairs and six At-Large members, comprise the lay members of the new Administrative Team. They are supported by Southern Hills pastors and staff who relate to the Team. Please note the Ministry Action Plan graphic in the upper left of this article which emphasizes the interrelated nature of these functions. Persons may enter involvement in the life of our church through any of these points of contact: Connect, Jack Jones, Team Leader Environments we create to build relationships so others can become a part of God s church. This includes all activities that make contact and invite new persons into our fellowship, as well as organizing our membership to use spiritual gifts, abilities and experience effectively as they volunteer for ministry. Grow, Elizabeth Bartlett, Team Leader Environments we create to help people become more confident in their understanding and application of God s amazing love. This team relates to ministries such as youth, children, Sunday School, Small Group Ministries, Recreation, and Fellowship. Serve, Teddy Poore, Team Leader Environments we create to help people to better experience and express their gratitude, obedience and spiritual gifts as reflections of God s amazing love. This group relates to all foreign and local mission projects. Organizations such as United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men and the Eagles would be active in this area. Worship, Matt and Julie Beck, Co-Team Leaders Environments we create so people can connect with God together - being challenged, energized and taught. Note that Worship is at the center of the Ministry Action Plan, as it belongs in the center of everything we do as a community of faith. This group relates to all choral and instrumental groups and ensembles, and components of worship for both traditional and contemporary services. Please pray for our church, as we live into this new order in the days ahead. And remember the words of Isaiah 43:19 which challenge us to change: I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Bill 1

COMMON GOOD IN NEED OF SUMMER MENTORS The Summer Program at Common Good runs Monday-Thursday from 1:00-5:00 p.m. for six weeks from June 6th to July 14th. It serves students in grades K-12 from North Lexington neighborhoods. The program includes four components: education, recreation, spiritual formation and leadership development. We need 40 mentors to commit to volunteering one (or more) days a week for the summer to help lead the weekly program. Background check and volunteer training is required. If you are interested in being a summer mentor contact Laura Gallaher by phone at (859) or commongoodcdc@gmail.com. Children s ministry SHAWNNE CARTER TO SERVE IN INTERIM CAPACITY As we bid farewell to Christina & Aaron Bohn, we are thankful for the willingness of Shawnne Carter to step into an interim role with our Children s Ministry as we seek a permanent replacement for our Director of Children s Ministries. Shawnne will be overseeing the Sunday morning organization of Sunday School and the programming that takes place each Sunday. WALK THIS WAY VBS - COMING JULY 2016 Vacation Bible School is coming back this summer, although the format is changing. Instead of cramming all that VBS fun into one exhausting week, we re running our VBS program on four Wednesday nights, starting July 6th. We need LOTS of help to make it a success! Please consider volunteering in any of the following areas: Small Group Leaders leads a group of kids and encourages spiritual growth and relationship building through small group activities. Host Team greets and escorts families as they enter the church and guides them in the process of registering and checking in. Dinner Coordinators oversees preparation and setup of dinner each evening. Game Directors oversees the preparation and facilitation of the game activities. Supply Shoppers purchase a list of items needed for VBS as your schedule allows. Clean-up Crew straighten up the rooms at the end of each Wednesday night. Sign-ups are on the bulletin board in Herren Hall, or contact Christina. 2

As part of SHUMC s efforts to reach out into the community and grow our church (and the Christian faith), we are beginning an Alpha Course ministry on June 26, 2016 at West Sixth Brewery (also known as Smithtown Seafood Restaurant, FoodChain (aquaponics), The Bread Box, etc.) This Alpha Court will involve members of our church going to a lunch after church on Sunday (12:30), enjoying the fellowship, watching a Christian educational video by Nicky Gumbel (Alpha founder), and discussing the video with people in the community who are thinking about becoming Christians (who have questions about the faith that we might be able to guide them on). Please bring someone with you who might be at that decision-making stage. Everything will be finished by 2:15. The course will last approximately 11 weeks. 5
