You drove to the church, often in very cold weather, to inflate mattresses and make up beds, cook and serve dinner, prepare breakfasts, assemble sack lunches for 12 men each week, while also running to the store or back home if we had run out of something we needed that night. You cleaned up after dinner, drove the church bus to pick up our guests and deliver them back to downtown Lexington on Sunday, accompanied them to services after breakfast at Cracker Barrel, stayed the night with our guests as overnight hosts, disassembled mattresses, cleaned up sleeping and eating areas, washed mattress pads, and even bagged up the sheets, blankets and towels for pick-up by a commercial laundry in Lexington. During this season, approximately 340 SH and CC UMC members volunteered in one capacity or in many areas working individually, in small groups, larger teams, multi-generational families, scout troops, circles, and choirs to help maintain stability in the lives of over 170 homeless men during the 15 Saturday nights our Room in the Inn was open. It certainly does take a village to make this RITI program successful. We re grateful to all of you for giving of your time and resources and appreciate what you have helped our church accomplish this year in supporting such a worthwhile community outreach program. Please know how much we value your help in this special endeavor! Sincerely Your RITI Planning Team, Bev Jaquith, Janie Bowen, Doug Donaldson, Beth and Harry Miller, Bob Mason, and Guy Williamson 4
5 Rev. Joan Wooden ~ Director of Music and Worship JUNALUSKA BOUND! Ten youth and nine adults from SHUMC will head to Lake Junaluska (NC) on June 25 th to participate in Music and Worship Arts Week, sponsored by The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Participants will experience a wide variety of rich worship services, and will be able to participate in choir, drama, dance, instrumental ensemble and the visual arts all led by some of our denomination s most outstanding experts in their respective fields. Please be in prayer for our youth and adults, as they seek to learn more about worship, and how we are each called to use our gifts to honor and glorify God. HOLY COMMUNION AND THE EARLY CHURCH In the first century, Christians would often participate in synagogue worship and then quietly gather at someone s house to experience the sacrament of Holy Communion. This was, of course, well before Christian worship, as we know it, evolved and Holy Communion, due to the persecution of Christians, was often done in secret. At Southern Hills, we offer Holy Communion once a month in our traditional services. Because the Eucharist is a means of grace, some of our members have requested that it be offered on a weekly basis. To that end, we have placed a table and kneeling rail in the office behind the sanctuary. Each week, Dr. Bill blesses the elements before our services, and Lynn Osborne is available to serve between the services. Please feel free to participate in this sacred moment and remember those first Christians, who also yearned for this sacrament! All are welcome. WEAR RED ON PENTECOST! The Day of Pentecost is the fiftieth and last day of the Easter Season, when the church received the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). This year, Pentecost falls on Sunday, June 4 th. To commemorate this very special day, you are invited to wear red, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit in our midst! SUMMER BOOK STUDY BEATITUDES FROM THE BACKSIDE BEGINS JUNE 21 There will be a book study this summer featuring "Beatitudes from the Backside." by J. Ellsworth Kalas. The study will be on Wednesday nights at 6:30 P.M. from June 21 through August 9. Books will be on sale for $10 at the Welcome Center after traditional services. This is a wonderful book. Using his method of approaching Bible passages from an unusual angle or a unique starting point, our favorite teacher, the late Dr. Kalas, presents new insight into the Beatitudes, Jesus blessings from the Sermon on the Mount. The study will coincide with an eight-part sermon series, The Beatitudes: Basic Instructions for Meaningful Living " which will start on June 18 and run through August 6. Both campuses. Traditional services and the Source, will be on the same schedule, with Jill Ruhl and Bill Moore, preaching. ROWLAND SMALL GROUP ANNUAL BOOK SALE June 17 and 18 (In conjunction with the Rummage Sale) The Rowland Small Group Annual Book Sale will be in conjunction with the Guatemala Rummage Sale on June 17 and 18. Donations of books for the sale would be appreciated and may be brought to the church business office. If you need books picked up, please call the Mollencop s at or the Neuzel s at
6 KRISTINA WHITE - Children s ministry Camp Kaboom: Discovering Who God Is Through hands-on activities that use children s innate curiosity about science, Kaboom! Discovering Who God Is allows children to explore the character traits of God in a way that will leave lasting impressions on their hearts. The lessons help children not only learn about the character trait but also what that trait means to their own lives. David s life is intertwined within the lessons, giving children a glimpse of how God reveals his character. As the children come to know God better, they will learn to trust Him more and to love him more deeply. Join us June from 6:00-8:30 at the Source Campus. If you are interested in volunteering, please let Kristina know. We need a Games Leader, one more Science Lab Leader, Registration and Crew Leaders (they take the children around to the different stations). Register at or pick up a form at Children's Worship sign-in. FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE - RICK ARNOLD FINANCIAL CONDITION This month s financials show a slightly negative position. This snapshot of our church was taken the same day in which payroll posted, which caused the negative position. The day before we were slightly in a positive position. All things considered we are still a healthy church and there is no need for concern. ON-LINE GIVING Our church software (CDM+) offers an on-line giving portal, which can be accessed from your home computer, tablet or smart phone. This will allow you to give to various funds using either a credit card or a bank account and directly connects your giving to your church account. However; you must first create an account, which involves using your own address, which must match the address we have in our system. To begin this process go to southernhillsumc.org/giving and follow the instructions. If you have questions or problems, please feel free to contact me at the church. REUTER PIPE ORGAN - UPDATE We continue to receive donations to the Organ Fund. As of May 17, the total received was $71, towards our goal of approximately $140, Initial payments have been made, however; we don t anticipate the organ will be removed until after Christmas and be returned by Easter 2018 Current Income / Expense May 17, 2017 Income (in thousands) % Budgeted SHECP Contributions The Source 128 Other Income Total Income 1, Expenses SHECP Capital Property Personnel Administrative Education & Worship The Source 127 Leisure & Outreach Total Expenses 1, Balance (32) 6

Contact Brian Cathey at rbcathey@southernhillsumc.org, call the church at or text DONATION NEEDS On July 17th, a group of Southern Hills members will be traveling to Guatemala to make what seems like a small impact in this overwhelmingly aching world. Some of the greatest needs our members will encounter will be the need for baby items and shoes for children of all ages. To help fulfill this need, we need your help. We will be collecting new and gently used tennis shoes and baby items (clothes, blankets, etc.) which we will take with us on our mission to Guatemala. We will also be creating a "registry" of items needed by the family in the house we will build. You may purchase the items or "sponsor" a specific item donating the item cost so we can purchase the items in Guatemala. There will be a bin located in the Narthex and The Source Welcome Center from June 1st through July 9th. Please help us help others by donating or sponsoring these much-needed items. 7
