2 Catholic Education: Part 4 C atholic schools have the unique capacity to academically connect reason and faith, science and religion. This is an especially important feature for our young people today. Indeed, the Center for Applied Research (CARA) at Georgetown University suggests the same. St. Mary s Press recently published the CARA research study that it commissioned in a publication entitled, Going, Going, Gone: The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics. Its findings note that the average median age when formerly Catholic teens and young adults left the faith was 13. Just under half (45%) said their disagreement with the Church s stance on a political issue important to them was at least somewhat important to their decision to leave. This is not surprising given the cultural wars, social issues, and divisive political polarization in our wider society. But, what was very surprising, was that 36% said that the perception that their Catholicism conflicts with their scientific learning was at least somewhat important in their decision to leave the Church. Thirty-six percent! This is due to public education in which God has no role or even the mention of God or of prayer have become an abomination. A Catholic education is the answer to this. When confronted with a science that is competitive with their Catholic faith, many young people simply leave their faith instead of delving deeper into it. Our young people don t know that their Catholicism and their science actually go together. They complement each other. Or, as St. John Paul II so eloquently noted in his encyclical, Fides et Ratio, Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.... One of the more challenging findings of the CARA study noted above is this observation: The authors of the CARA study do not perceive any significant way for the Church to attract many who have left to return to the faith. While historically some do return, often as they age or because of a life-cycle effect, there seems to be a difference in the millennial generation, particularly with respect to the idea of not wanting to force religion on their own children. That suggests that this life-cycle effect may no longer be true (p. 32). Younger parents millennials do not come back. It used to be that when young adults had children, they often returned to the practice of the faith and the habit of Sunday Mass. But the most recent findings suggest that today young parents do not necessarily return to the practice of the faith once they have children. Therefore, Catholic schools reach out to evangelize not only the child but also the parents. The mission of Christ has Catholic schools to bring our parents back to Christ. Catholic schools do not exist simply for the economic and social well being of our students or even of our larger society. Yes! We can and should be proud of the academic and social achievements of our graduates. But, we also must remember that these achievements mean nothing if the child and the parents are not brought closer to Christ and closer to the commitment they made at the baptism of their child. Fr. Oregon Life United Petition #1 to stop taxpayer-funded abortions in Oregon had more than enough signatures to get on the Oregon ballot in November! Next, we can help Oregon Life United to get supporting statements into the Voters Pamphlet by women who have experienced an abortion and now regret it. A table will be set up in the Narthex after all the Masses this weekend, August 11th/12th, at both churches with petitions to this effect, as well as at the Parish Office. There are three petitions. You may sign all three, as they are for getting statements into the pamphlet by three different women. Respect for Life Ministry

FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Novena for Our Nation Details Intentions and Local Activities St. Francis of Assisi s participation in the national 54-Day Novena begins Wednesday, August 15th, with the 12:15 p.m. Mass at the Historic Church, and ends on Sunday October 7th, in a pilgrimage to the top of Pilot Butte. A picnic will follow at the bottom of the Butte. This powerful Novena will be prayed following all 12:15 p.m. Masses at the Historic Church throughout the 54-day event. Parishioners can pray the 54-Day Rosary Novena individually, on your own schedule, as well. Special Novena rosary prayers can be found on novenaforournation.com/daily-reflections/. The four intentions of the Novena are: respect for life at all stages of development, the sanctity of marriage and families, upholding our constitutionally protected religious freedom, and the return of our nation to God and His holiness. Parishioners are encouraged to join ranks to stand united with millions of Catholics across the U.S., calling upon God through the powerful intersession of Our Lady of the Rosary to heal our country. 6 Bible Study Starts Tuesday, September 11th For this fall, we have two comprehensive Bible studies to be held at three different times! The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation, starts over from the beginning, as many of you requested. This acclaimed study by Jeff Cavins helps you learn the overarching story of God s plan of salvation, and gives you an understanding of how people, places, events, and themes of Scripture fit together. This course, facilitated by Ken Magnan, is perfect for those who have never studied the Bible, recent converts to Catholicism, and Bible-study veterans. The focus is on 14 narrative books of the Bible. Format: Read Bible at home; 50-minute DVD in class; brief discussion. Term: 8 consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th through October 30th. Time: Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in the RCIA Room across from the St. Clare Chapel, OR: Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Attend one or the other.
