2 Introducing the Posadas I would like to give you some background information about the Posadas, which are being celebrated again in our parish this Advent season. Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration with origins in Spain, now celebrated chiefly in Mexico, Guatemala, and portions of the United States, beginning December 16th and ending December 24th, in the evening (at 8 or 10 p.m.). Posada is Spanish meaning lodging, inn, or accommodations. It is said in plural because it is celebrated more than one day in that period. The nineday novena represents the nine months of pregnancy specifically the pregnancy of Mary carrying Jesus. The celebration has been a tradition in Mexico for 400 years. While its roots are in Catholicism, even Protestant Latinos follow the tradition. It may have been started in the 16th Century by Friar Pedro de Gante, or it may have been started by early friars who combined Spanish Catholicism with the December Aztec celebration of the birth of Huitzilopochtli. Traditionally, two people dress up as Mary and Joseph, and each night certain houses are designated to be the inns. The head of the procession will hold a candle inside a paper lampshade, and at each house, the resident responds by singing a song. Mary and Joseph are finally recognized and allowed to enter. Once the innkeepers let them in, the group of guests come into the home and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray (typically, the Rosary). Latin American countries have continued to celebrate this holiday to this day, with very few changes to the tradition. In some places, the final location may be a church instead of a home. Individuals or children may actually play the various parts of Mary and Joseph, with the expectant mother riding a real donkey (burro), and attendants such as angels and shepherds are acquired along the way. Or the pilgrims may carry images of the holy personages instead, and the children may carry poinsettias. If the posadas are held indoors, the donkey is usually made out of wood. The procession will be followed by musicians and, at the end of each night s journey, there will be Christmas carols (villancicos), children will break open star-shaped piñatas to obtain candy and fruit hidden inside, and there will be a feast. In Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens host a Las Posadas Celebration on December 20th. During workshops in the daytime, participants make their own nativity scenes with local, natural materials, including Spanish moss. In the evening, carolers proceed to nativities that are placed among important plants, including poinsettias and native Mexican pines. A bonfire and more singing rounds out the celebrations. In the U.S.A., various traditions have arisen and are being adopted in several states. In Wisconsin, the procession may occur within a home, rather than outside, because of the weather. An event in Portland, Oregon, terminates with Santa Claus and donated Christmas gifts for needy children. In New York, worshippers may drink Atole, a corn-sugar drink traditional during Christmas. A large procession occurs along the San Antonio River Walk and has been held since It is held across large landmarks in San Antonio, Texas, including the Arneson River Theater, Museo Alameda, and the Spanish Governor s Palace, ending at the Cathedral of San Fernando. In the Philippines, which shares Spanish culture due to being a former possession, the Posadas tradition is illustrated by the Panunulúyan pageant. Sometimes it is performed right before the Misa de Gallo (Midnight Mass), or on each of the nine nights. The main difference from the original is that actors portray Mary and Joseph instead of statues, and they sing the lines requesting accommodations. The lines of the innkeepers are also sung, but sometimes they respond without singing. Another difference is that the lyrics are not in Spanish but in one of the local languages, such as Tagalog. In our parish, the Posadas will be held starting on the 16th of December until the 24th. On Christmas Eve, the procession will be held in downtown Bend with the Spanish Mass starting at 8 p.m. Some food will be provided at the end of each Posada. On Saturday, December 19th, the Posada will be in English and held in the Community Center. The Rosary will also be said in English and will include a PowerPoint presentation of the Rosary. We encourage people to attend and experience this Mexican tradition. God bless you, Father Julian

4 4 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Fr. Joseph s Corner... [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] et us talk about FRIENDSHIP today. The great man, L George Washington, former President of the U.S.A., gives us this sound advice: Be courteous to all, but be intimate with a few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks and adversity before it can be called friendship. Friendship is made up fundamentally of two elements: affection and communication the heart and the mind to love each other and to know each other. To share my life with my friend is to reveal myself to him/her and receive his/her revelations to me. The most remarkable aspect of friendship is that of a free association of two persons free to join and free to part. There is no other relationship that is based on such an absolute freedom of choice. Fr. Carlo G. Valles, in one of his books, Calling Together, writes, My best self comes out in friendship my joy, my tenderness, my mischief, my care for others and my courage to be myself all flower up spontaneously and almost irrepressibly when I am in the presence of a friend. Friends are not born. They are made. One might call it a kind of magnetic attraction which draws two people together. The foundation of a friendship is laid on faith and understanding. It is cemented by love and trust. Dr. Abel Bonnand says, In love, one has the need of being believed and, in friendship, of being understood. Friendship is not what we take from others but what we give to others not so much the material gifts, but the Friendship gifts of compassion, sincerity, understanding, etc. Good friends help to maintain equanimity of mind and to lead a happy life, even in tiring circumstances. As R.L Stevenson once remarked, A friend is a present you give yourself. Friendship, no doubt, is a many-splendored thing if handled carefully. Otherwise, it turns into a nightmarish experience. Friendship is like a rose flower, beautiful and refreshing, but it has thorns that will pierce if not handled properly. The pain of a prick certainly lasts longer than the inhalation of the enchanting fragrance. Thoughtfulness is one of the chief ingredients of friendship. It is the person who always says, I ll help, who shows the quality of his friendship. A friend in need is a friend, indeed. Friendship is like a chain that binds two souls together. Therefore, friends should be ready to help each other. He who keeps one s company in prosperity and shrinks away in time of need can never be a real friend. Rather, those who warn us against whatever is wrong are our real friends. The Bible says in the Book of Ecclesiasticus that A faithful friend is like a safe shelter. Whoever finds one has found a rare treasure. Only those who fear God can find such a treasure. We need friends in our lives. We need friends to act like a shield to stand firm in our happiness as well as our sorrows. We need friends like that of Shakespeare s Antonio. We require friends to give meaning to our lives, to make them more sublime and cheerful. Prayerful wishes, Fr. Joseph Dear Parishioners, As we approach the end of 2015, we are con nuing to seek cost savings for the parish. One opportunity that has presented itself is the year-end contribu on/tax le er. The IRS only requires that such le ers be provided to those contributors who have given, as a single gi / dona on, $250 or more. In past years, the parish has provided year-end le ers for all parishioners regardless of a single gi or annual dona on amount. This is quite expensive for the parish, as actual costs can be in excess of $1,200, plus the volunteer man-hours needed to fold le ers and stuff envelopes. For 2015, year-end le ers will be provided to donors who must have le ers per the IRS requirements. For parishioners who don t meet the above-men oned criteria, le ers can and will be provided upon request. You may request a le er by to: finance@s rancisbend.org, or by calling the Parish Office at (541) Thank you, Fr. Julian, Pastor Jane Rude, Finance Director

6 6 Dispelling a Myth It is important to dispel a myth. Our parish has not yet completed the process of refinancing our debt on the New Church. Therefore, we must continue to be obligated to make monthly payments of $28,000 toward the $3.5 million-dollar loan. The St. Francis Finance Committee has worked very hard over the last 12 months to make sure our financial footing is strong and able to support our faith-building efforts. As mentioned above, our mortgage on the New Church is currently at about $3.5 million, which equals a payment of about $28,000 a month. The Parish and the Diocese have been working for the last 12 months on refinancing this debt, which will, hopefully, result in lower payments in the future. I know some in our parish community believe this has already been completed, but it has not. Therefore, we must continue to be good stewards of the money we were loaned for construction of the New Church. This means continuing to make the payments to which we are obligated. This is why your continued tithing is so important. Unfortunately, with tougher lending standards after the Great Recession, this has been a long and laborious process one we have still not completed but, we are still working on. When the process (or if the process) will be completed, we do not yet know. We will keep you up-todate on our efforts as news becomes available. ST.
