2 Rome to Home: St. Paul Part II W ithout a doubt, the great hero of the second part of The Acts of the Apostles is Paul of Tarsus, who calls himself the apostle of the gentiles in Rom 11:13. Born at the start of the Christian era (5 10 A.D.), he converts to Christianity approximately in the year 36 and becomes a member of the followers of Jesus Christ; he goes up to Jerusalem on several occasions, where he encounters Peter and the other columns of the church and participates in the first council of the apostles. An intense missionary activity soon follows. Paul made three very important missionary journeys. We flew into Cyprus an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean about 50 miles from the Syrian border to trace part of Paul s first missionary journey. (Read Acts 13: 1 12). We flew into Larnaca and made our way to Nicosia, the largest city in Cyprus. We spent the night there, and early the next morning we went to the Holy Cross Catholic Church to say the Holy Mass and visited the Cyprus Archaelogical Museum, which houses the most important collection of Cypriot antiquities and art treasures spanning 5,000 years. Then we crossed the demarcation line into the Turk-occupied Cyprus, which is about 1/3 of the island, to see the Seliminiye Mosque. It was formerly the St. Sophia Cathedral Church built in medieval times in beautiful Gothic architecture and turned into a mosque after the invasion of the Ottomans in In Turkish-occupied Cyprus, we visited a number of beautiful churches that were converted into mosques by the Ottomans. Bell towers have been converted into minarets; crosses, stained-glass windows, and all Christian symbols were removed, and mihrabs (niches) were installed in the walls to indicate the direction of Mecca. A walk into those mosques will immediately raise your imagination to the once-beautiful interior of those churches. There aren t any known Christians or active churches in the Turkish-occupied Cyprus of today. The second day we crossed into the Turkishoccupied Cyprus again to visit the tomb of St. Barnabas, the companion of Paul on his first missionary journey and a native Cypriot. This tomb was discovered in the 4th Century, and a church was built over it. The condition of the church is sad. None of his remains are there as this is not an active church because it is in the Turkish-occupied land. However, we celebrated the Holy Mass quietly behind the church in the open air, surrounded by trees, not wanting to draw the attention of the authorities. It was an unforgettable experience. Then we made our way to Salamis once an ancient Roman port where Luke says in Acts 13:5 it was the place Paul and Barnabas arrived on their first missionary journey. I had to wet my feet in the sandy shore where St. Paul had arrived, bringing the gospel of Christ. Salamis also has a number of important ancient archeological sites, although it s not much of a port any more. But to know that I was walking in the same place that St. Paul had once walked gave me goosebumps. And while standing there, I said a prayer for all of you. Fr. Jose Thomas

You may contact Penny Grieg at: bpgreig@gmail.com or (541) with any questions. Dear Parishioners, October has come around again the month we dedicate to Respect for Life. It s worth taking a minute to remember why we do. Seventeen centuries ago, St. Cyril of Jerusalem raised questions that ask to be answered in every human heart. Who prepared the cavity of the womb for the procreation of children? Who breathed life into the inanimate fetus within? Who knit us together bones and sinews, and clothed us with skin and flesh...? How is it that the child, in growing, becomes an adolescent, and from an adolescent is transformed into a young man, then an adult and finally an old man, without anyone being able to identify the precise day on which the change occurred? Cyril knew the answers to his questions were to be found in the Psalmist s hymn of praise to the God of Israel: Lord, You have probed me; You know me.... You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother s womb.... [M]y bones were not hidden from You when being fashioned in secret as in the depths of the earth.... [M]y days were shaped before one came to be (Ps. 139: 1, 13, 15, 16). In a similar vein, this same God revealed to the Prophet Jeremiah how he came to be: Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born. I dedicated you (Jeremiah 1:5). These passages led Pope Benedict XVI to echo what St. Cyril was getting at: The arrival of each person in the world is always a new creation. This simple truth has wide-ranging consequences. First of all, says St. John Paul II, It is necessary... to recognize the essential quality that distinguishes every human creature as that of being made in the image and likeness of the Creator Himself a being destined in the plan of redemption to be clothed in the dignity of a child of God. From this first consequence flows a second. Pope Benedict says:... life is the first good received from God and is fundamental to all others; to guarantee the right to life for all and in an equal measure for all is the duty upon which the future of humanity depends. To fulfill that duty in part, we observe Respect for Life Month. We do so because, as Pope Benedict reminds us, There is a problem we cannot get around: no one can dispose of human life whether by abortion, by physician -assisted suicide, or by euthanasia. The human being is not a disposable object, but every single individual represents God s presence in the world. Let us strive to help our country respect His presence in the lives of those whose dignity most needs defense. In the Lord of Life, (signed) Bishop Liam Cary 5

6 6 ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS AGA 2018 Thanks to our generous parishioners, alumni, and school families, we have raised $20,765 of our $75,000 goal! Look for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School s Annual Giving Campaign Envelopes in the Parish and School Offices. Please make your check payable to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, and write AGA on the memo line. Help us to achieve our goal by making your contribution today. Thank you! Fr. Bill spoke with the students about the life of our patron Saint, St. Francis of Assisi. Please Remember to clip those Box Tops! Thank you! Bingo Night Rescheduled We know many of you look forward to our Annual Bingo Night, usually held in October. This year it will be held on Friday, January 18th. Please Save the Date! Middle School Retreat The Teachers at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School work hard each day to nurture and develop the students academically, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. We want to challenge and encourage our students to grow, to learn, to care for others, and to appreciate their own special characteristics. This year, the focus of the retreat was Image. The two days were spent helping the students to realize that even though we are all different, we are all created in the image of God, and that we are here because God loves us. Students and Staff had an overwhelmingly positive experience, and all gained new insights about themselves and each other. Some of the highlights included the Myers-Briggs Questionnaire to help ease communication issues, the Step Forward-Step Back Activity, an Anti-Bullying speaker, water slide, marshmallow shooter building, and a Pajama Contest. It was an amazing retreat that started many conversations which we will continue throughout the school year!

7 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE In Theaters This October Cans and Bottles Collection Gosnell: The Trial of America s Biggest Serial Killer exposes the truth of notorious abortionist Kermitt Gosnell a story the mainstream media, Hollywood, and the abortion industry tried their best to cover up. In 2013, Gosnell was charged with eight counts of murder; seven of whom were newborns killed by In Defense of Life having their spinal cords severed with scissors after being born alive in his grisly Philadelphia clinic, ironically called the Woman s Medical Society. Additional charges included 24 counts of performing abortions beyond Pennsylvania s 24-week time limit (six months), and 277 misdemeanor counts of violating the 24-hour informed consent law. Go online to: to find movie locations near you. As of October 3rd, Oregon lists only one location in Grants Pass. Additional listings include Vancouver, WA; Boise, and Nampa, ID. The book, Gosnell: The Untold Story of America s Most Prolific Serial Killer, contains the author s full investigative results, including evidence the liberal media failed to report. St. Francis parishioners are urged to call local theaters: in Bend, The Old Mill Stadium at (541) ; the Redmond Cinema at (541) ; the Sisters Movie House at (541) ; and the Madras Cinema at (541) Request that the movie be shown if they still do not have it available as of today. And encourage your family and friends to do the same! Gladys Biglor Stewardship of Giving: The current mortgage balance is $372,879.
