2 Called to Live the Gospel of Life A sweeping new bill, House Bill 3391, or the Reproductive Health Equity Act of 2017, passed by Oregon lawmakers on Wednesday July 5th, will force taxpayers to assume some of the costs of abortions, even though many oppose the procedure. This bill would expand the state s already-liberal laws, requiring insurance companies to pay for abortions and other reproductive services at zero cost to the patient. The new bill requires that insurance companies provide coverage for abortions and reproductive services regardless of income or gender identity or immigration status. That means the state would spend another $500,000 on abortions to cover those without proper immigration status. In the past 14 years, according to state health records, already-expansive abortion laws dictated that almost $24 million in state funds were spent on more than 52,000 abortions. The new bill is also uniquely expansive in as much as it allows for coverage of abortions for virtually any reason, including sex-selective and late-term abortions. While some religious exemptions are provided for, such as in the case of churches and some religious nonprofits per federal law, the bill states that the government would step in to pay for coverage in the case of such gaps. It also codifies the right to abortion access, even if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned. Oregon is the only state without current restrictions added to provisions of Roe v. Wade. The bill passed the Oregon Senate on Wednesday along party lines. It is very unfortunate that it has become a party issue and not an issue of moral conscience. The bill is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Kate Brown, whose office exclaimed, Yes! Yes! Yes! Thursday on Twitter, referring to the bill s passage. When there is a national push to restrict taxpayer funds going to abortion, this bill is nothing but a gift card to Planned Parenthood for abortions. As Catholics, we believe in a gospel of Life and not death. A wrong does not become right just because it is legal. What is right and wrong is written in our hearts even before we are born. All that we need to do is listen to our hearts. I will put my law in their minds, and write it on their hearts (Jeremiah 31:33). Life is the most precious gift we have received from God. God s plan for us is life eternal and not life destroyed in the womb. We need to resist the forces of evil with prayer and fasting. Let your voice be heard to your representatives. I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying His voice and holding fast to Him (Deuteronomy 30:19). Father Jose

5 Rosary Rally for Our Lady of Fatima St. Francis Parish community will be praying the Rosary in pubic every 13th of the month from June through October, 2017 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Blessed Mother s apparition at Fatima. The rosary rally will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Historic Church, on the north side handicap ramp. Only a small bit of time out of your day will make a difference, and our combined prayers will surely be heard in heaven. The rosary will conclude with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The next Rosary Rally is on Sunday, August 13th, at 11:30 a.m., at the above location. More dates will be announced in this Parish Bulletin in the future. Be sure to bring your rosaries, and invite friends or curious seekers to join you! Parish Welcoming and Farewell Potluck All parishioners are invited to attend a Welcome and Farewell Potluck on Saturday, July 22nd, after the 5 p.m. Mass, in the Catholic Center, to "Welcome" our new Parochial Vicar, Fr. Victor Mena-Mendoza, and to say Farewell and Blessings to our Director of Faith Formation, Mr. Daniel Gutierrez, as he heads to Mt. Angel Seminary at the end of July to discern his vocation to the priesthood. If you are going to the 5 p.m. Mass, please bring your potluck dish to share to the Catholic Center before Mass. Someone will be there to take it, and keep it warm or cold until the potluck event begins at about 6 p.m. Latin Mass The next Latin Mass is on Sunday, July 23rd, at 1 p.m., at the Historic Church. The Mass will be in the Novus Ordo form celebrated by Bishop Liam Cary. The Latin Masses that are currently scheduled for the month of August are on August 6th, a High Mass, and August 20th, another Novus Ordo Mass by Bishop Cary. ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Christmas Faire November 2017 Yes, it s true! It s time to start thinking about the 2017 Christmas Faire, and we need your help in planning this year s event. Please come to the first meeting on Monday, July 31st, at 6:30 p.m., in Seminar Room #1. We have a wonderful group of people who work to make this event the best and largest fundraising event for our parish, but we need new volunteers and new ideas. Please join us for this first meeting of the season. We need your input! All the proceeds from the Christmas Faire go directly to the New Church mortgage. Our Lady of Fatima 100th Anniversary Celebration The Fatima Centennial U.S. Tour for Peace to celebrate Our Lady of Fatima will take place in August. If you would like more information, please call Patty Christopher at (541) or visit the Website at: Masses Are Being Added for the Solar Eclipse Weekend St. Francis Church is preparing for the 2017 Solar Eclipse event by adding a couple of extra Masses in order to accommodate the many anticipated visitors to Bend. We have received funds for 1-1/2 classrooms so far out of the five we need. The total monies received to date is $3,860, so if you can help with this expense, or sponsor one or more classrooms, please let Fr. Jose know ASAP! Bible Study Starts September 12th! The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation, by Jeff Cavins, helps you learn the overarching story of God s plan of salvation and gives you an understanding of how people, places, events, and themes of Scripture fit together. The course is perfect for those who have not studied the Bible before, as well as for the Bible-study veteran. The course is also perfect for recent converts to Catholicism. The focus is on 14 narrative books of the Bible. Course Format: Bible & Catechism reading assignments at home; 50-minute DVD in class; brief discussion.
