The Corporal Works of Mercy s we live this Jubilee Year of Mercy, I want to A share some practical ways by which we can show mercy toward others during this coming year. Today and next week, I will give some suggestions about the Corporal Works of Mercy, and on the following two weeks, I ll share the same about the Spiritual Works of Mercy. These are 14 important and practical ways that are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others as if they were Christ in disguise. They are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs. They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. The first three of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy are listed below. After each work of mercy, there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives. Have your own suggestions? Feed the Hungry There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Donate to a Thanksgiving or Christmas food drive so everyone can have something to eat. Research, identify, and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry. The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need. Give Drink to the Thirsty Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working toward greater accessibility of this essential resource. We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Donate... to help build wells for water for those in need Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g., soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families. Do the same for youth and young adult groups. Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought. Shelter the Homeless There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth, and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face. See if your parish or diocese is involved with a local homeless shelter and volunteer some time. Donate time or money to organizations that build homes for those who need shelter. Many homeless shelters need warm blankets for their beds. If you can knit or sew that would be an extra loving gift. There are millions of children and families who are on the move, fleeing from war, illness, hunger, impossible living conditions, and searching for peace and safety. Engage parish groups of children, youth, young adults, and families in doing some research on the causes and challenges that these families face to survive. Contact Catholic Social Services, or diocesan offices of peace and justice for help with your research. Seek ways to provide shelter for the homeless locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally. God bless you, Father Julian

4 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Fr. Joseph s Corner... [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] A mouse, a pig, a cow, and a snake A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package. What food might it contain? The mouse was aghast to discover that it was a mouse trap! Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning, There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house! The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is of grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it. The mouse turned to the pig and told him, There is a mouse trap in the house! I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, sympathized the pig, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured that you are in my prayers. The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, Like wow, Mr. Mouse! A mouse trap! Am I in grave danger? Duh. So the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected to face the farmer s mouse trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knows that you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup s main ingredient. His wife s sickness continued, so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer s wife did not get well. In fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral that the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat. So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem, and you think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk. Prayerful wishes, Father Joseph Special thanks to all the decorators during the Christmas celebrations: Rick and Lupita Wesseler and their family who crafted the beautiful stable for our Nativity, as well as all the decorations in the New Church. Judy Kennedy and her helpers who decorate annually the Historic Church. Alan and Sean Walsh and their helpers for decorating the outdoor Nativity at the 27th Street entrance. All those who sponsored the 24 figures of the Fontanini Nativity. All the choirs, directors, organists and pianists, Judy Goff, Choir Director, and Colleen Rastovich, Children s Choir Director, and the Youth Choir who joined forces this year for the Children s Mass. The Ministers, Lectors, Sacristans, Altar Servers, Ushers, and all those who work behind the scenes to make this parish the beautiful place that it really is. Thank you, Father Julian

The Feast of the Epiphany The Feast of the Epiphany, which was kept in the East and in certain Western Churches before being observed in Rome, seems to have been originally a feast of the nativity. January 6th, for those churches where it was kept, was the equivalent of Christmas (December 25th) in the Roman Church. The feast was introduced at Rome in the second half of the Sixth Century and became the complement and, so to say, the crown of the Christmas festival. Epiphany means manifestation. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. Christian tradition has ever seen in the Magi the first fruits of the Gentiles. They lead in their wake all the peoples of the earth, and thus the Epiphany is an affirmation of universal salvation. St. Leo brings out this point admirably in a sermon, read at Matins, in which he shows in the adoration of the Magi the beginnings of Christian faith, the time when the great mass of the heathen sets off to follow the star which summons it to seek its Savior. That is the meaning, too, of the wonderful prophecy from Isaias, which the liturgy appoints to be read in the first nocturn at Matins and at the Epistle of the Mass. This same thought of universal redemption the Church returns to as she sings, in the antiphon to the Magnificat at 2nd Vespers, applying the words to herself, of the union with Christ typified by the wedding feast at Cana, by the baptism of her children foreshadowed by that of Christ in the waters of the Jordan. Formerly, the Epiphany was an additional day for solemn baptisms. From the Internet, Catholic Culture News

6 ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS Stewardship Service Sacrifice Community service is a part of daily life at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. Our students join forces with local charities to create a maximum impact for their time, talents, and treasures. Moral growth is the goal, and it is developed through active witness with a joyful expression of loving compassion for others. Becoming stewards in the community is easy and fulfilling when older students mentor the younger. The school garden is a perfect setting for fun in learning while gaining both the benefits of stewardship and mentoring. Middle School students introduce skills and processes that keep the garden flourishing. Over the last five years, hundreds of pounds of produce have been donated to St. Vincent de Paul Bend and local homeless shelters. Our students are globally aware citizens who prayerfully consider the needs of others. Our Middle School students sacrifice their time after school and on weekends for parish and community events. Each classroom has its own service project. The entire student body takes part in the collection of nonperishable foods and fundraising for community needs. During the school year, our students supported Bravo Troop 1-82 Cavalry Unit in Afghanistan; provided food and supplies to Bethlehem Inn and other homeless shelters through Vital Provisions; cooked meals for Ronald McDonald House and Bethlehem Inn families; made donations to the Humane Society and Equine Outreach; provided clothing to needy Middle School students in Prineville; visited Stone Lodge Retirement Center, sharing holiday songs and original stories; collected jackets, mittens, and socks for local area children; filled Christmas food boxes for more than 100 families; donated hours of yard clean-up to our auction; sent cards to shut-ins; and sent school supplies to a school in Uganda.

Letter From the Finance Committee Our parish school plays two very key roles in our parish s identity. Our school is contributing to the next generation of Catholic leaders. Our school is also helping to maintain the financial health of the parish. A frequent question to the Finance Committee is, How much does the parish contribute to the school? The answer may surprise you: The school is actually a net contributor to the parish coffers. The school pays the parish approximately $120,000 for rent, utilities, and other shared expenses, such as maintenance and custodial services. Each year, the parish provides the school with $50,000 in tuition assistance for the children of the parish. Most of this comes in the form of financial aid to needy families. So at the end of the day, if the school ceased to exist, the parish would have an approximate $70,000 financial hole to fill as well as a large, vacant building. The parish school and the parish, at large, have a significant symbiotic relationship. Having parish members understand this relationship is fundamental to understanding the financial health of our St. Francis Parish. ST.
