2 The Five Stages of Death ELISABETH KÜBLER-ROSS (July 8, 1926 August 24, 2004) was a Swiss-American psychiatrist, a pioneer in near-death studies, and the author of the groundbreaking book, On Death and Dying (1969), where she first discussed her theory of the five stages of grief. I thought of reviewing these five stages today for a little information, especially for those who deal with patients and who have elderly parents, as well as those facing death. Death, as life itself, means different things to different people. But these five stages can be very consoling and comforting for those who may be going through one of the earlier stages. Also known as the grief cycle, it is important to bear in mind that Elizabeth Kübler-Ross did not intend this to be a rigid series of sequential or uniformly timed steps. It s not a process as such; it s a model or a framework. There is a subtle difference: a process implies something quite fixed and consistent; a model is less specific more of a shape or guide. By way of example, people do not always experience all of the five grief cycle stages. Some stages might be revisited. Some stages might not be experienced at all. Transition between stages can be more of an ebb and flow, rather than a progression. The five stages are not linear; neither are they equal in their experience. People s grief, and other reactions to emotional trauma, are as individual as a fingerprint. In this sense you might wonder what the purpose of the model is if it can vary so much from person to person. The model recognizes that people have to pass through their own individual journey of coming to terms with death and bereavement, etc., after which there is generally an acceptance of reality, which then enables the person to cope. The model is perhaps a way of explaining how and why time heals, or how life goes on. And, as with any aspect of our own or other people s emotions, when we know more about what is happening, then dealing with it is usually made a little easier. Again, while Kübler-Ross s focus was on death and bereavement, the grief cycle model is a useful perspective for understanding our own and other people s emotional reaction to personal trauma and change, irrespective of cause. These are the five stages as listed by Kubler-Ross: Denial Denial is a conscious or unconscious refusal to accept facts, information, reality, etc., relating to the situation concerned. It s a defense mechanism and perfectly natural. Some people can become locked in this stage when dealing with a traumatic change that can be ignored. Death of course is not particularly easy to avoid or evade indefinitely. Anger Anger can manifest in different ways. People dealing with emotional upset can be angry with themselves, and/or with others, especially those close to them, even at God sometimes. Knowing this helps keep us detached and nonjudgmental when experiencing the anger of someone who is very upset. Bargaining Traditionally the bargaining stage for people facing death can involve attempting to bargain with whatever God the person believes in. People facing less serious trauma can bargain or seek to negotiate a compromise. For example, Can we still be friends?... when facing a break-up. Bargaining rarely provides a sustainable solution, especially if it s a matter of life or death. Depression Also referred to as preparatory grieving. In a way, it s the dress rehearsal or the practice run for the aftermath, although this stage means different things depending on whom it involves. It s a sort of acceptance with emotional attachment. It s natural to feel sadness and regret, fear, uncertainty, etc. It shows that the person has at least begun to accept the reality. Acceptance Again, this stage definitely varies according to the person s situation, although broadly it is an indication that there is some emotional detachment and objectivity. People dying can enter this stage a long time before the people they leave behind, who must necessarily pass through their own individual stages of dealing with the grief. I hope this brief information will help those who are facing death and dying issues, and especially those who deal with patients and family members who are nearing death. Most importantly, we assure them of our prayers of support, and we remember frequently all the sick, those in hospitals, and in nursing homes in our daily Masses. God bless you, Father Julian

4 4 Fr. Joseph s Corner... St. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE [Fr. Joseph will either write a brief article on various topics, or he will answer any questions our parishioners may have. Just send an to: frjoseph@stfrancisbend.org.] A sobbing little girl stood near a small church from which she had been turned away because it was too crowded. I can't go to Sunday School, she sobbed to the pastor as he walked by. Seeing her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the Sunday School class. The child was so touched that she went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship Jesus. Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor tenement buildings, and the parents called for the kind-hearted pastor who had befriended their daughter to handle the final arrangements. As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled purse was found, which seemed to have been rummaged from some trash dump. Inside, 57 cents was found and a note scribbled in childish handwriting. The note read, This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School. For two years she had saved for this offering of love. When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew instantly what he would do. Carrying this note and the cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion. 57 Cents A True Story He challenged his deacons to get busy and raise enough money for the larger building. But the story does not end there! A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It was read by a realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands of dollars. When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered it for a 57-cent payment. Church members then made large subscriptions. Checks came from far and wide. Within five years, the little girl s gift had increased to $250,000 a huge sum for that time (near the turn of the Century). Her unselfish love had paid large dividends. When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of 3,300, and Temple University, where hundreds of students are trained. Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of Sunday schoolers, so that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside at Sunday School time. In one of the rooms of this building may be seen a picture of the sweet face of the little girl whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind pastor, Dr. Russell H. Conwell, author of the book, Acres of Diamonds. Prayerful Wishes, Fr. Joseph In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering. Pope Benedict XVI Eucharistic Adoration Adorers are needed for the following Holy Hours: Tuesday: 3 4 p.m. & 4 5 p.m. Wednesday: 8 9 p.m. Thursday: 8 9 a.m. Friday: 9 10 a.m. & a.m. Friday: a.m. Please contact Lisa Burley at (541) or to: lisaburley99@gmail.com. Stay tuned! Our new Parish Website is being launched on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th!

5 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Seniors Community Center Kitchen... have been incredibly busy this November as they volunteered hours and hours for the Annual Christmas Faire. And we all enjoyed the delicious Spaghetti Dinner by the Knights of Columbus on Saturday night. The AFTER FAIRE SALE is open this Sunday after the 7:30 and 10 a.m. Masses! Sue Rosa Altar Server Training There will be Altar Server Training on Wednesday, November 18th, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the New Church. This will be an excellent opportunity for new servers to be trained and for current servers to refresh their training and become aware of recent changes in procedures. (Pizza will be served afterward!) Thank you, Mike Morgan Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration All are welcome to join us for Song of the Soul on Thursday, November 19th, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon. Offerings received will benefit Youth Scholarships at the Cascade School of Music. You are also invited to bring a pie to share at our Third Annual PIE FEST! Beverages will be provided. Contact Chela Sloper at: admin@uufco.org for more information. Thanksgiving Day Offerings All of your offerings at the Masses on Thanksgiving Thursday, November 26th, go to St. Vincent de Paul. Please be sure to write St. Vincent s on your check, and use the SVdP designated envelope. Or you can also put cash or a check made out to St. Vincent s in the collection basket if you don t have an envelope. If you won t be attending Mass on Thanksgiving Thursday, you can still drop your envelope into any Sunday collection basket. Jeff Rickman, Director, SVdP Social Services As we all know, many groups in our parish use the Community Center kitchen. As hard as it is to keep it in good condition and up to standards with the Health Department, it is not always left in perfect shape after certain groups use it. Patty Marx is responsible for keeping it as clean as possible, and we thank her for her efforts to make sure everything is clean and sanitary. She coordinates the school lunches and is here daily to help the school. Because we want to be fair with everyone, we are organizing two sessions for all those who have used the kitchen in the past, those who may use it in the future, and those who use it on a regular basis. The two sessions on which Patty will be available to explain the proper way to clean the kitchen after each use are: Monday, December 7th, from 5 to 7 p.m., and Thursday, December 10th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Every group should have a representative or more attend one of the sessions to learn the proper cleaning process. If anyone does not attend a session for their respective ministries, they will be charged $20 every time they use the kitchen. No exceptions! This is fair for everyone because if you want to use our facilities, you have to respect them and keep everything the way you found it clean and tidy. Father Julian Cath Cash On Wednesdays during the Faith Formation classes, the children are given a cash coupon to change for small religious items, such as holy cards, religious medals, rosaries, bookmarks, religious booklets, miniature statues, religious jewelry, etc. Many parishioners also have items at home that they donate to us to use for the Catholic Cash store program. The children are always delighted to change their cash for a tiny gift. If you have items to donate, please bring them to the Religious Education Office anytime during the week. Or if you want to give a monetary donation instead, we will buy small religious items for the children. Thank you for your generosity Father Julian Blood Drive Mark Your Calendar! Save the Date! December 31st! The annual St. Francis New Year s Eve Blood Drive is calling you to save a life more information to come soon on how to sign up! 5

6 6 St. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Parishioners of St. Francis! Elementary Faith Formation The Lord has blessed this parish through all of you and your generosity. As a result of your ongoing contributions, St. Francis has become much more financially stable and in turn has allowed our great priests to focus on the spiritual health of this Church. I want to share some practical things on alms-giving for those who are trying to live faithful stewardship of their finances. Five things strike me as important: The tithe is defined as a gift of 10 percent of what we have or earn to give to honor God. Counted in this are all of our gifts to the poor and to charity, as well as our donations to the Church, which doesn't include Catholic School tuition. It should be planned. We don t tip God with whatever we have in our pocket. We put some thought into it that reflects our faith. Make it a priority. We make our giving a priority as we budget our other expenses. Give a percentage. We should be aware of what percentage of our income is being given to the poor and the Church. Whether it is 1 percent or 10 percent, we should know accurately how much we are giving. Make progress with your tithe. As we grow in faith, it should be reflected in our growth in simplicity and dependence upon God. Remember God doesn't just want us to tithe for the sake of tithing or because we hope to receive his generous response. He wants us to recognize Him as the Lord of everything and our faithful provider. Thank you again for your generosity.
