These are good things to do, but this is not a New Testament definition of being a disciple. Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is far more an adventure than most of us realize. If we aren t walking closely to Christ and very intentional about the mission of the church, we can become so engulfed in programs and facilities that we lose sight of our call to love God, love our neighbors, and make disciples for Christ. This is what it means to be a disciple. A disciple of Jesus Christ is someone who loves God, loves the neighbor, and seeks to make other disciples. Are you a disciple of Jesus or just a church member? It s good to be a church member, but being a church member and faithfully serving the organization is not our goal. Is your congregation passionate about making disciples and deploying them in the world or just making church members who will meet the needs of the church? Even if a congregation answers these questions correctly, their calendars, their budgets, their congregational chatter, may betray a greater desire to make church members than make disciples of Christ. A disciple is someone who is head over heels in love with Jesus. A disciple is someone who loves to spend time with Jesus in prayer and scripture study. A disciple is someone who loves to share his or her faith with others. A disciple is someone who is growing in their faith and witness. A disciple is someone who loves the neighbor. Disciples display to the world a new way of being human. Disciples come together to worship because God is worthy of worship and humans were created for the worship of God. Disciples gather as Christians to become better equipped as fruit-bearing disciples. Disciples gather because we need each other. It is important for disciples to come together. But, disciples come together in order to scatter and be in mission in the world. The bulk of the ministry of disciples needs to be in the world, not in the churches. The sign of a vital congregation is how it transform the human community. Disciples are involved in God s work of healing the world.

2 September 2015 Volume 4, Issue 9 Page 2 Sometimes we get so focused on getting people to come to church that we forget that the ministry of the disciple is to be in the world and not necessarily at the church. We need to be more concerned about being the church than going to church. When a church is only concerned about numerical survival, they probably will not survive. If a church becomes overly focused on survival, they forget the importance of loving God, loving neighbors and making disciples. Whether it s an individual or a group, being focused on survival with tend to cause an individual or a group to become self-centered. And, this spells death for a group or an individual. Churches who are not making disciples and engaging the community likely will not survive for long. Let s help one another be more passionate about making disciples of Jesus who transform the world than making church members who are passionate about church programing and serving the institution. We need to help each other keep proper priorities; priorities that display Christ to the world. With Confidence in Christ, Jeff Two Opportunities to Learn and Serve in FaithHealthNC The Yadkin Valley District will host a four-hour training seminar for servants who would like to be a part of their neighborhoods through interacting with folks recently discharged from WFBMC who have no family or communal support nearby. Traditional ways of organizing faith communities and declaring faith perspectives are changing dramatically. What might that mean for the church's message and the church's future? The Ties That Bind: Protestants in Conversation movement explores that and other questions at a gathering in Winston-Salem Sunday, October 18, 4-6 p.m. at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, the church on the hill above U.S. 52 at Fourth Street. The event is open to the public at no charge. Discussions will be led by Dr. Bill Leonard, Dunn Professor of Baptist Studies and Church History at the School of Divinity at Wake Forest University; Rev. Terrance Hawkins, associate pastor, Winston-Salem First Church, and community activist; Mia Sloan of St. Peter s Church and World Outreach Center; and Rev. Emily Hull McGee, senior pastor, First Baptist Church on Fifth Street. Their comments will be followed by 45 minutes of small-group conversations that cover questions like these: What does it mean to speak of and engage with God s New Day in the world? How do we understand that most basic aspect of Jesus message and its implications then and now? In what ways might faith communions engage in that dynamic through their own ministries and in shared ministries in the community? Is the meaning, message, and action involved in recognizing that God s New Day continues to come near an appropriate guide for renewing faith, ministry and congregational life? Registration for tickets and childcare can be made online at The meeting is hosted by Interfaith Winston-Salem, a nonprofit organization that works to build a more peaceable community through understanding our neighbors.

Competitive closing costs with no application fees or points Resources to refinance current loans or fund new construction, expansion, renovation and other capital needs. All this helps your church be a good steward of its resources, freeing up more funds for vital ministries. For more information, contact Christian Burns, Executive Director, Client Relations and Cultivation, , ext. 1507, or cburns@umfwnc.org. Creating a Legacy through Planned Giving When was the last time your church hosted a workshop on creative ways to give to your church while also benefiting an individual and their family? How can an individual make a lasting gift to your church through their will or estate plan, or other planned gift? Many planned gifts have attractive tax and income advantages for the donor and the donor s family as well. Many people can make a planned gift to their church but either don t know they can or don t know how to do it, according to Christian Burns, Executive Director, Client Relations & Cultivation of the United Methodist Foundation of Western North Carolina. They can have an impact on the mission and ministry of their local church beyond their own lifetime. Churches can utilize the Foundation to assist members and friends make a lasting gift to their church. According to Christian, People can give the church many different kinds of gifts, not just through the offering plate on Sunday morning. Most people tithe or pay their pledge from income, but people can also give from their assets. For example, a gift of appreciated stock is welcomed by the church, and in most cases can be given without a tax consequence to the giver. We also encourage people to leave a lasting legacy to their church through bequests from their will or estate plan. Other gift arrangements, such as Charitable Gift Annuities, combine a gift to the church with annuity payments for the donor or donors for their lifetimes. For more information regarding planned giving workshops, please contact Christian Burns at the Foundation office at or by at cburns@umfwnc.org.
