UNITED METHODIST WOMEN YADKIN VALLEY DISTRICT Newsletter Fourth Quarter 2017, Volume 5, Issue 4 Officer Training/Leadership Development November 4, 2017 Main Street UMC - Kernersville

PRESIDENT: Darlene Gardner Happy Fall Y all! As I write this, I am getting ready to leave for Annual Celebration at Lake Junaluska. This special meeting is a time to celebrate everything our district and the other seven districts have done during I am so proud of this district we have grown together and really taken on the identity of the Yadkin Valley. United Methodist Women in the Yadkin Valley is alive and doing well! This will be the last newsletter article I will pen as your president. Amazing how four years can fly by in just what seems like a moment. Thank you for the opportunity to represent you in our Conference. This has been an amazing journey for me and one I am so proud to have taken. God is using you in this district to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We have helped food pantries, packed meals for the hungry, put together UMCOR kits for everything from flood buckets to layettes, supported the homeless with our pocketbook ministry, tutored in schools, provided food for backpack programs, volunteered at Open Arms Ministry, donated hours and dollars to many worthy causes and done it all to the glory of God the Father. There are still some major events our district will undertake in the remaining months of Ubuntu Day of Service will be on October 14. It is a chance for us to serve our national mission institutions right here in our conference. The Bethlehem Community Center in Winston-Salem could use your time, or the other sites would welcome your support too. And on November 4th, leadership training will be held at Main Street UMC in Kernersville. Even if you are continuing in an office you have held for years, it is imperative that you come and see what changes have taken place, plus it is a wonderful time of fellowship with your UMW sisters from around the district. I would be remiss to not thank all the members of the Yadkin Valley Executive team. Truly you are such wonderful women. Our success as a district is because of your dedication to your positions and your faith in what UMW does. You will always hold a special place in my heart. In this age of division and unrest, it is reassuring to know that United Methodist Women are still putting faith, hope and love in action. Our foremothers would be so proud. And the Legacy will continue... Love, Darlene 2

Leadership Development: Mary Jo Brewer Greetings to all as we enjoy the autumn season. Autumn means that it is time for our Officer Training/Leadership Development event. It will be Saturday, November 4, :00 a.m. 12:00 p.m., at Main Street UMC in Kernersville. The theme is Smile! Sparkle! Shine! Our speaker will be Marty Driver who is with the new Yadkin County Hospice Home and our Hands-On Project will be items for the Hospice Home. Mrs. Driver said that they would like to be prepared for infants and toddlers who may be at the Hospice Home. Items requested are: baby blankets, crib sheets, crib toys and any baby shower type gifts. I m sure that monetary donations would be appreciated also. We will also take up a love offering for Undesignated Giving. Please come and bring other UMW members. We will have sessions for all officers and program area coordinators, as well as circle leaders. If you don t fit into one of these categories, come anyway for the fellowship and program you might attend sessions for officers or program area coordinators or circle leaders who can t attend. Many thanks to the ladies at Main Street UMC for hosting our event. Directions to Main Street UMC are below. We look forward to seeing you Saturday, November 4, 9:00 noon, at Main Street UMC in Kernersville. Smile! Sparkle! Shine! Mary Jo Spiritual Growth Coordinator: Barbara Crotts Good day, United Methodist Sisters This year is winding down, and so we are already making plans for next years district events. I have already seen the plans for our Mission Study for I have a speaker for our Day Apart/Prayer Breakfast in She is Julie Taylor, author of the programs in our new program book for You can read about her on page 10 of the program book. She is available to speak to us on the first Saturday in May. Now, all I have to do is find a host church that can accommodate our attendance for this event. I would like to use a church that has not hosted an event. I think it is important to include as many churches as possible for our events. It is always good to go to new places and see our beautiful sanctuaries and fellowship halls. I have actually considered only having coffee and juices, and a sweet roll or fruit, and focus mostly on the program. We have a lot of churches that can hold 250 or so, but those same churches just do not have the facilities to host a set down breakfast. The main purpose is to remember our deceased ladies, hear some special music and sing songs of praise, hear a good speaker, and end the event with communion. Keep the date open for this event, and the host church will be in our first newsletter in We all enjoy the fellowship with our UMW sisters, no matter where the place or what we eat. Please remember to get those names in on your end of year reports. Barbara 3

Vice President: Martha Isenberg Our District Annual Meeting in August was attended by about 160 members. It was a special time to celebrate each unit s accomplishments during the past year, to conduct district business and to elect and install officers for next year and to share together in worship. Most people rated the afternoon as excellent. Rev. Marilyn Weiler, pastor at Pine Grove UMC in Winston-Salem, was our guest speaker for the worship program. Her inspirational message on Our Community Calls challenged us to do even more to reach out to our community to help those in need. A special thank you goes to the ladies from New Hope UMW as they made us feel welcome with their hospitality. Joining them in providing delicious refreshments were members from Antioch, Faith, Hickory Ridge, Kingswood, Pleasant Hill and Tabernacle. The hands on project for this meeting was to bring supplies for Bethlehem Center. This included paper to be used in the office, but most were supplies that would be used directly by the students in crafts and instructional activities. The center director was so surprised and delighted to see us arrive with two car loads of supplies. Thanks to all who brought supplies! I have enjoyed serving as your vice president for the past two years and feel honored that you elected me to be your president for next year. With God s help and yours, I will do my best to make it an outstanding year for United Methodist Women! Peace Martha Secretary: Cathy Smith Welcome to autumn. The leaves are beginning to show the Glory of God with their many beautiful colors. This is a time for reflection on what we ve accomplished throughout 2017 in our units. It is also a time to ponder plans for Leadership training will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC. We will be sharing best practices and tips for unit secretaries and communications coordinators. Please bring the tips for success you practice within your unit to share with other unit secretaries and communications coordinators. Our goal is to share and learn all we can to make our jobs easier and more productive in See you at Leadership Training! Cathy 5

Education & Interpretation: Valerie Prim Change is in the air and God is in control!" That's what I kept telling myself as I watched the hurricanes cause so much destruction and leave devastation along their paths. Then the earthquake; Then the fire; What could I do? What could anybody do? There were so many people and places in need of help! I just sat frozen in the chair not sure where to start. Then I remembered the story of a little boy who was trying to save the large amount of Starfish that had washed up on the beach, when a man approached the boy and asked him what he was doing. The little boy applied, "I am saving the Starfish sir." Which the man replied, "you can't possibly save all of them.?" To which the boy replied, "No, but I just saved that one." Finally I turned the TV off and prayed. It was then and only then that I excepted that I couldn't help everyone, and needed to focus my mission on helping someone. Are you overwhelmed with what to do? This FALL, may I challenge you to "be still", pray and then go be in mission for Christ, one person/project at a time. 7 Nominations Chair: Sharon Reid Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart Psalm 111:11 I want to thank our Heavenly Father for another wonderful year. We have been so blessed with a generous and loving community of women who have felt God s call to serve. Now that we have elected our new district officers, and our new conference officers, we need to also remember to pray for our local unit officers. As we learned at our 2015 Leadership Development gathering,,, May God bless you. In one body, we have many members do not have same function having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us Romans 12:4 6 So let us pray for Christ s Church Body for the small parts as well as for the larger parts of His Holy Body. Let us pray that we all work together for good. Romans 8:28 And I want to thank everyone for their help and patience in guiding me through my term as Nominations Chair. Your Sister in Christ Sharon Hello Special UMW Ladies, Program Resources: Debra Lawson It is with sadness I write today. My tenure as your Secretary of Program Resources will end this year. It has been a blessing to serve, meet, and create new friendships with the ladies of our district. Thank you for the privilege and opportunity to serve you. We also are about to end the period for completing the Reading Program. You have two more months to complete reading the books required. I hope you all will try to complete the reading program requirements. You must read at least one book from the five selections. They are Leadership Development, Social Action, Spiritual Growth, Nurturing Community, and Education for Mission. Remember that reading an eligible children s book to children also counts. United Methodist Women mission studies can be read for credit in the following categories: Spiritual Growth Study to Spiritual Growth Geographic study for Education for Mission Again thank you for the opportunity you gave me to serve you for the last four years. Blessings in Christ, Debra 7

He adapted the rules and practice of Congress to the needs of non-legislative societies. His work is still regarded as the basic authority on the subject of parliamentary procedure. Since 1876 there have been 11 subsequent editions. The 11 th and current edition was published in Do you have a copy of the current edition that has been re-edited, expanded, and updated? Brenda 8

Fall Greetings my UMW sisters! Treasurer: Jamie Smith Information regarding our District Leader Development day has been included in this Newsletter. I hope ALL local unit officers will mark your calendars and plan to attend! I m sure we can learn from each other sharing our ways of doing our jobs might be different, new and better for some of us. The treasurer s training is designed for new and returning treasurers. We will have handouts, forms and brochures in folders for each treasurer attending. There is always something new to discuss, and we will emphasize our roles in promoting missions across our country and throughout the world. As treasurers we are serving in the mission field by guiding our UMW members to give for the benefit of women, youth and children worldwide. At the end of our officer break-out time at Leader Development, we will address any questions or concerns you may have. So bring them with you and add you may think of during our time together. Remember, we are now into our 4 th Quarter (September, October, November) as our year is winding down! I will need to have all treasurer s remittances by November 30 for them to be credited to 2017 giving. I will be looking forward to seeing you at Leader Development on November 4 (9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Main Street UMC, Kernersville! Let us Serve with Joy! Jamie So for Hello Beautiful UMW Communications Coordinator: Deborah Brooks Thank you for another great year in our Yadkin Valley District. Don t forget to send me an updated officer list this December. It is very important even if the officers did not change. Verify with the officer that her address is correct (yes.,..we have received old addresses on new forms). I will try to have forms at the Leadership Training and send out via to your unit president or at least an officer with an address in your unit. Send me pictures of your UMW events. Your UMW sisters really like to see what others are doing in the district. Encourage those with an address to sign up for the electronic version of the newsletter. Less paper and most of the time, she will receive it before the paper version goes out. Help us use your pledge money wisely. Many blessing to everyone Deb 9
