This Trappist monastery was home for twentyseven years to Thomas Merton, one of the greatest authors on spirituality of the twentieth century. Monks have inhabited this monastery since 1848 where they have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of God through ora et labora, prayer and work. During my stay at Gethsemani, I was reminded again of the rich spiritual traditions of Christian monasticism. As I immersed myself in the silence and rhythm of the monastery, the monastery increasingly became a place where I could hear my thoughts and hopefully hear the Voice of God. In the seventeen hundred year history of monasticism, the movement has acquired many traditions to help the monk live the balanced life, a life committed to both work and prayer. One of the simple things that has always impressed me about the monastic life is how easily they can quit things in order to go pray. The Trappists of Gethsemani pray seven times a day beginning at 3:15 am. When the church bells rink, the monks stops whatever he is doing whether it s sleeping or teaching or working in the daily upkeep of the monastery and promptly goes to the church to pray. The bells call the monks back to God and they do not find the interruptions in their day to be frustrating because they try to do all things in moderation and in proper balance. Throughout the day, they quit what they are doing in order to do something of greater importance which in this case is prayer. I think that this practice has taught the monastic world the art of quitting. This is an important skill, one that seems rare in our narcissistic world where we imbue our work, our events or our traditions with too great an importance. Quitting seems to be a failure and thus an assault on our ego. In our possessiveness and search for security, we have a hard time letting go of things. The modern church world desperately needs to learn the art of quitting. It is much easier to start something in a local church than stop it. Some churches are doing the same thing on certain days of the year because that is what the church has always done. This is slavish adherence to the calendar of congregational events and ministries without any time for evaluation or reflection. We need to continually ask the question, What is God calling us to do now? We are the people who learn to hear the Voice of the Shepherd. Churches seem to be mindlessly held hostage by traditions, events and ministries that were started decades ago, and while they may have been started in obedience to God s will and proved fruitful at the time, God might have long ago called the church to embrace new traditions, events and ministries in order to serve the present age. The art of quitting is essential if we are living a life of obedience and sanctification where we are always moving on to perfection, always letting go of the good in order to move on to the better. The spiritual life is to be a journey and we are called to be pilgrims, not settlers. With Confidence in Christ, Jeff

9 August 2015 Volume 4, Issue 8 Page 9 Vitality Grants for the Local Church The Yadkin Valley District Vitality Team is now accepting applications for Vitality Grants for this fall. This one application will also serve as the application to the Conference for their grant funding. Here's how the grant process works: 1) You have or are starting a ministry or innovative idea that helps your church live into its mission to Follow Jesus, Make Disciples and Transform the World or start a new faith community. In other words, this is a ministry or idea that helps you church as a whole to build the kingdom of God and spreads the Good News of Jesus or begin a new faith community that does this. 2) Go to the conference website: and fill out the online application. There is a short video at the top of the page that explains this process too. 3) The grant application is forwarded on to your District Superintendent and Vitality Team who will then choose to either fund it fully, partially fund it and send it on to the conference level, pass it completely on to the conference, or offer to partner with you in some other way. The deadline for this grant application is Thursday, October 1st. You may also note that this grant looks very similar to the one used by the District Missional Engagement Team. This is so that the two teams can better discern which team (or maybe both) is better situated to partner with you. Please know that your District Vitality Team is more than just a source of financial partnering. You may also use us for resources in consulting and helping you find the right resources to strengthen you ministry and witnessing efforts. Update on The Children s Home These are exciting days at The Children s Home. The Children s Home served 133 children last month. The Board of Trustees is working hard to lead this historic Methodist Institution into a fruitful future of serving the needs of children. The Board of Trustees is now made up of United Methodists from the following congregations: Brookstown UMC, Centenary UMC (W-S), Main Street UMC (Kernersville), Ebenezer UMC (Lexington), Mount Tabor UMC (W-S), Myers Park UMC (Charlotte), Reeds UMC (Lexington), St. Paul UMC (W-S), and Wesley Memorial UMC (High Point). It is our hope that all of the churches of the Yadkin Valley District will support The Children s Home by observing Children s Home Sunday on September 13. The Children s Home would like to bring a speaker to tell their story in your church. If you want a speaker or presider that day, call Tammy at or write TSmith@tchome.org. Bulletin inserts will be mailed August 25. If you do not receive your information in a timely manner, please call Tammy. This year s featured resident is Jon-Morgan, a young woman whose bad choices hospitalized her twice. She stole from her parents and would stay gone for days. Her mother, Pam, found The Children s Home substance abuse treatment program online. Today Jon-Morgan is cogent, clean and committed to restoring her relationships with her parents and church. Her parents are thrilled to have their daughter back. The Children s Home is committed to revitalizing their relationship with Western North Carolina churches as it continues to serve children on our behalf, as it has done since 1909.
